The location is great, not far from the N2, and the river view from the place is stunning. The place is full of interesting history. The owner is very pleasant and helpful, allowing us to peruse the rooms at our leisure. She gave us directions for the 2 short walks on site (almost 1km and about 500m), which are through the forests and beautiful with lots of bird life. The pool was clean and refreshing, and the room we had was spacious with all we needed. Breakfast was delicious. The two dogs (one very big and one small) are friendly and loving; the sausage dog showed us the way to go on the walks.
I was disappointed with Booking.com because they did not send through our reservation, so we were not expected when we arrived on site. This resulted in the room we had booked not being available, as it had not been cleaned, so we were given a downstairs room with no balcony and no view. Unfortunately, the shower did not work, and looking at past reviews and speaking to the owner later, it seems the shower is a known issue. This issue should be resolved, before the room is rented out to anyone else to use. The owner said she would call in a plumber to sort this out.

Exceptional stay at this beautiful historical mansion set in the tranquility of a nature reserve, with breathtaking views of the Umzimkhulu River. Olde World charm enhanced by stunning antique furniture and fittings and interesting objet will transport you into the romance of a bygone era. At every turn there is something to enthrall, from ancient trees hosting colourful orchids to stained glass doors twinkling in the soft light. The house is an utter delight.

The property gives you a feel of the country side home were the aristocracy in England use to live. The ambience and views are mind blowing , you get to connect to nature at its uttermost. You can have breakfast whilst sitting on a balcony watching the river stream and exotic birds.
When I arrived one of the door windows from the bedroom balcony was broken of which it was attended to the following day.

Steeped in history, handsome homestead. Gracious, friendly, and helpful hosts. Beautifully decorated spaces. Generous breakfasts, and well presented. The dogs were just wonderful. We even got to nap with the sausage dog, a highlight for me. Centrally located to Umtentweni and Port Shepstone. We were happy with the location. Obviously, one can not easily walk to the main Port Shepstone or Shelly beach beaches, but the property has its own walks/hikes down to the river. All in all, we highly recommend Royston Hall to stay. Thank you to Ria, hubby, and your lovely staff for a very pleasant stay.
The only negative for us was the shower 🚿. It really needs to be attended to. There were no other negatives for us

Breakfast was excellent - delicious and beautifully presented. Location is amazing. Lush verdant forest vegetation near a winding river. Spectacular views and rich bird life. Royston Hall Guest House epitomises the olde worlde charm of a bygone era. We apppreciated the tranquil solitude that Royston offers. Our room no. 6 was spacious with high ceilings and plenty of light. There is a shared balcony with lovely views.
Towels were a bit musty and one was stained. Hand basin was blocked.

The force and strength that nature expresses is best understood when we experience it first hand, and what better place to experience this, than in the Royston Hall BnB. Awesome location. Breath taking river view. The hosts and the staff were super hospitable. Everything shown on the pictures is exactly the same.
Although their great danes were tame and friendly but I could not help my uncomfortable fear of dogs, especially of that massive physique.

The breakfasts were outstanding ! Beautifully presented and delicious. Served out on the verandah with an amazing view of the estuary , the forest and all the way to the sea. Ria the hostess was very welcoming and on request served amazing dinners . Ria made our stay a truly happy and memorable occasion . The house is a treasure trove of South African history with many stories spanning more than a 100 years. We would love to re visit this special place.

It‘s not online a very romantic getaway, but also quite a special travel in time (somehow one expects the Queen or at least Ernest Hemingway to come around for tea….). Unusual place with great service and an amazing setting - ideal for a relaxing weekend-trip!
No complaints…

The tranquility and stunning setting on the river. Perfect break. The full English breakfast on the veranda was a real treat. The owner lent me her reading glasses as I had forgotten mine.
The road leading to the property needed repair

Breakfast was beyond my expectation. Delicious, well presented and definite quality for money.
Everything was clean and beautiful. The road to the guesthouse may be off-putting to some, but you cannot expect a beautiful facility such as this, in the location it is to be a highway.
