August 2024

The location is absolutely beautiful - you will immediately feel at peace. We went in August so the foliage was a bright vibrant green. Though communal baths are available - highly recommend getting a room with a private onsen. The accommodation is what you’d expect of a traditional style ryokan - charmingly rustic. Dinner was served outside by the river, making it feel so special. The kaiseki on the first night was delicious, but the portions were much smaller than what we previously experienced at a different ryokan. Bring some snacks with you if you have a big appetite (there is a small fridge in the rooms to keep your own food/drinks in). Thoroughly enjoyed the sukiyaki dinner on our second night - it was our first time having this dish and loved the theatre of watching the food cook in front of you. It was a lovely surprise being able to chat and take a photo with maiko (apprentice geisha) before their performance. Seeing their immaculate makeup and kimono up close makes you appreciate the effort involved. I believe this is only available Friday - Sunday so definitely plan your trip ok these days if it’s something you want to experience. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. Overall a magical place. Highly recommend!!!

Would be nice if they could have reached out after booking to advise on how to get there. Though my fault - I only realised the day before that the location wasn’t within walking distance of public transport. Give them a call and request a shuttle pick up from Hanazono station. I was given the option of 3:10, 4:10 or 5:10. The driver arrived promptly and was very friendly. They can also drive you back to the station on your last day, so long as you check out at 10:15.

Beautiful location and experience. Very very peaceful. The surroundings are stunning, make sure you take a walk around! The private bath was fabulous, and the room was very clean. The set meal was nice, and well prepared. If you don’t like “traditional” Japanese foods (tofu, pickled veg etc.) /set meals, I would enquire about the options. You can get a shuttle to and from the property from the JR station - just enquire to find out the information. I would recommend bringing some drinks and snacks (if you like that type of thing) as there isn’t much around if you want this.

The bus arrived on time to fetch us from the station. When we arrived at the Annex it was like we had stepped into another world. It was so peaceful and quiet. Staff were friendly and efficient. Dinner and breakfast were exceptional. The room was comfortable and we loved having our own private hot tub.

Check-in and check-out times were quite restrictive. We had hoped to go on some of the walks and enjoy the surroundings but didn't have enough time because of the late check-in and early check-out and shuttle to the station. The check-in form said that there would be entertainment during dinner, however, this did not take place. It was other guests and not staff that told us that there was nothing else on because it was a weekday.

Amazing work, really good value for money, a best in class experience. We loved the yukata included, the lunch service was amazing and we loved the maiko's dance. I really loved the private onsen which was already prepared when we got there. On top of it, the beds were really comfortable, the included ammenities were really nice as well All I hoped after a day of travel was to be taken care of, have a long onsen session, go to eat and sleep! and here at Momijyia thats what I got, from the moment we arrived at the check in counter till we departured. I can't recommend it enough!

Staying at Momijya was one of the top highlights of our Japan trip! The nature surrounding us was beautiful and we enjoyed our traditional ryokan experience with an outdoor bath tub. There was also a free shuttle bus service which was useful and the staff were super friendly. The meals included with our stay were amazing too (so much food!) and they were attentive to our dietary requirements (we messaged prior to our trip). May be pricey, but I think it was worth it :)

Had to do our own research regarding the shuttle buses based on reviews, would have been helpful if this information was readily available. I would message them to enquire about this information prior to your stay. Shuttle buses to the location are from 3pm onwards and the check-out shuttle bus back is quite early so we didn't have much time to explore due to only staying 1 night.

The staff were so kind & polite! Loved our private onsen and getting to see a different side of Kyoto. Everything felt intentional & authentic. Dinner and breakfast were excellent! We recommend possibly staying 2 nights if you enjoy hiking. We only got to see 1 of the local mountain shrines and underestimated how long it would take to hike up all of the stairs 😅 definitely take advantage of their shuttle service. Only other way I can think of would be to taxi. Stay here if you’re looking to see a more pampered & authentic version of Kyoto!

Thin walls! Not a ton of privacy in that regard.

Beautiful views of fall foliage, overall serene and invigorating experience. Staff go above and beyond to make sure you are comfortable. Our private outdoor bath was a highlight of the whole trip. We easily reserved the shuttle bus service through the email on their webpage and it arrived right on time. We stayed 2 nights so we could have a full day to explore the nearby temples.

Lovely staff let us know that meals by the river were only during the summer - what a shame! We'll have to come back again

This hotel and its location were stunning! I loved that the hotel offers a free shuttle bus to and from train stations. The scenery on the drive to the hotel was beautiful! The room was beautiful and very comfortable. The private outdoor spa bath was perfect, surrounded by well maintained gardens. Staff were so kind and welcoming and the meals (dinner and breakfast) were delicious. Staff were able to provide a vegetarian option (asked for in advance) and double checked dietary requirements before serving meals, which was very much appreciated.

December 2023

The location is amazing! Right up in the mountains, full of autumnal foliage (even late in the season). It's so beautiful to look at from the moment you see the suspension bridge overlooking the river. It was the beginning of December and there were still some maple trees, plenty of red leaves on the ground. The rooms are spacious, had a heating pad on the floor, and the private garden was gorgeous and very tranquil as I took a hot bath in the ceramic tub. Dinner was served in our room and was delicious. I felt like I was in a movie. I could only stay one night but enjoyed every moment.

The stone path up to the ryokan is steep (a bit dangerous for younger or older people). The pillows were very flat and hard. The extra pillows found in the closet looked dirty. The breakfast was not as good as dinner, felt a little small with mostly pickled items, rice, and soup.

The area this ryokan is situated in is absolutely stunning. It's in perfect position to visit the Jingo-ji temple which is beautiful at this time of year. The staff were so helpful, and always polite. We were greeted off of the bus, after a bit of a long rainy day with smiles, welcomes and thankfully, umbrellas! We were promptly shuttled to the hotel where they had put our shipped luggage in our room so it was waiting for us. We enjoyed the food - bring big appetites! The food is traditional Japanese which was a good experience for us as it was our first time eating a traditional dinner and breakfast. We were also able to choose a shabu-shabu dinner for our second night. The staff were very understanding when we had to cancel one breakfast as I'd made a mistake with our itinerary. They were also very keen to offer a shuttle to and from the hotel, one in morning and one in the afternoon. They arranged a taxi for us with no problem, and stored our luggage for a little while after check-out so we could go and see Jingo-ji temple. The whole experience was a treat and we are very grateful to the staff.

Our only issue was finding a bus to the area. This was partially our fault because we didn't get to Hanazono for the shuttle in time, but also Google as it could not identify where the bus stop was so we struggled with that aspect. Once we knew what bus we needed however, it was easy going from the ryokan around Kyoto.
