Staying at Tanna Lava View Bungalow was the best part of our trip to Vanuatu. Getting there is an adventure in itself. After multiple stops in town to get supplies and pick up other passengers we were on our way across the island to the Bungalow and volcano. The steep road over the mountains is sealed but once across the island the road becomes a rutted dirt track for the remainder of the journey. To get to the bungalow you have to drive along creeks, cross ash plains and travel on some very interesting tracks - especially after rain. The bungalow is located up the hill above the village of Isaka and the view is AMAZING!. You can hear the eruptions from Mt Yasur and at night you can see the red glow above the volcano. It was incredible to wake up to a loud boom and see Yasur glowing and to watch the sunrise over it. The bungalow is a thatch hut with straw mats on the floor and basic but comfortable bedding. There is only limited solar power for lighting at night and cold water in the shower. The location gives you some privacy from the village yet is close enough to wander around at your leisure. We felt safe and comfortable during our stay and only shut the door to keep the roaming pigs out. Daniel and Chela were incredible hosts. Communication from Daniel ahead of our stay was quick and friendly and he was so flexible in meeting our changing requests for activities. During our stay Chela was so warm and welcoming. Dinner and breakfast were local fare and very tasty. We really enjoyed talking with her about her village and life on Tanna. As others have said in previous reviews - this place is not a resort. It is "rustic" and there is still damage from last year's cyclones. If you have a sense of adventure and enjoy camping, authentic village experiences or appreciate a slower and quieter existence then give this place a go.
Our time there was too short.

The property owners are wonderful. They arranged airport transfers and tours of the local attractions. They provided excellent meals and were wonderful hosts. The location is remote, but the stay included a delicious breakfast, and lunch/dinner were available. The rooms had a great view.

We expected a jungle experience and that is what we got and we loved it. Daniel and Chella were the loveliest, kindest people, as were the amazing drivers.

Perfect location for volcano viewing in simplicity with the local community and the natural surrounds
Only one chair which did not make it comfortable for lengths of time watching the changing moods of Mt. Yasur on our balcony.

Not really a criticism, but try to stay in the upper bungalow can you, as it's views of the volcano at night from its balcony.

The family that runs the accommodation is lovely, very helpful, they cook nice homemade and very fresh meals. The views from the room are amazing you can see and hear the volcano all the time. The cabin is very cute, but very basic. Daniel and his wife are lovely. All their family is
It is not a resort, it's a humble place in the middle of the jungle. If you don't like bugs, maybe it's not the right place for you, if you don't mind it then it's a very authentic local experience.

View of the volcano.
I knew to expect to electricity and cold water and bugs, no issues here. Did not expect droppings or something similar to be in the bed and falling on us from the thatch roof all night.

We didn’t even see the property. Despite having a confirmed booking and written confirmation & contact up to the day before, we found upon what we thought was arrival they were overbooked

The view of the volcano is exquisite. Couldn't be better view. Right at the edge of cliff, viewing the mountain. It's is surreal, and feels like being in a dinosaur period, with Volcanos and deep jungle all around. The village is 100m down the road, and you can immerse yourself in true Vanuatu jungle village life. Hens and small piglets roaming around in search of roots and other food. People doing their daily work. And everyone very welcoming. The beds were good, and we all had a mosquito net around, although there weren't any mosquitoes. We had running water in the sink and shower, and it was visible that the conditions we had were better than in the village. The owners really made an effort to give us anything we asked, whether it's vegan food, lighting, and transportation.
This isn't an experience that can be compared to a hotel in some fancy resort area. So set your expectations in accordance. They aren't hot water in the shower, although it isn't cold either. There isn't 24x7 electricity, only some solar powered power-bank to re-charge the phones at night, and light some lamps. The trip from the airport to the Bungalows is not easy. It's half by road, and half by unpaved diet road, that has many bumps. As such, if you travel as a group and some people ride in the back of thd truck, expect some tossing and shaking. But hey, it's all part of the experience, and one cannot expect better conditions and accessibility to such remote villages in the deots of the jungle, viewing across a live volcano. So just live the experience, and you'll remember it as a once in a lifetime adventure.
