This is a lovely, characterful place to stay, situated in a village, down near the harbour. The staff were so friendly and helpful and we enjoyed our daily conversations - they always had time for their guests. The seafood dishes were just wonderful and very generous in size. We stayed for four nights; the accommodation was ample and very comfortable and breakfast was absolutely luxurious. It's a lovely place to stay when visiting Orkney and the drive to the island of South Ronaldsay, where the Murray Arms is situated, takes in some wonderful views of the islands.
There is some guest parking at the rear of the property, but be careful when driving out onto 'Back Road' as the visibility right and left is very limited.

What a place! From the moment we arrived we were met by the manager Suzanne and made to feel immediately welcome. She checked us in efficiently and helped us with any questions we had. The parking was convenient and highly accessible to the rooms. The rooms were spotless and comfortable with plenty of space. We ate here all three nights and the food was high quality and sourced locally (side note - having ate our way around Scotland this was by far the best fish and chips we had on this six week tour). Breakfast was fantastic and made to order. All the staff were great - of note were Jacqueline and Tina who really helped make this a wonderful atmosphere with good levels of local knowledge and banter. The location may seem a whiles away from the major destinations, but it really isn't - and crossing the Churchill Barriers on a daily basis and looking out to the sea was wonderful. If staying here do yourself a favour and make sure you have a drink in the bar and don't just stay in the restaurant all the time - the locals are fantastic. Thank you for an excellent stay - I cannot recommend this place enough.

Staff very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was delicious and quite a feast! We also ate at the hotel on the nights we stayed and loved the seafood food - especially the chowder which is the best I have ever tasted. Room comfortable, quiet and very clean. Very dog friendly - we were able to take our spaniel into the restaurant with us and he was treated to smoked salmon at breakfast!. Close to one of the ferry terminals. Would stay there again without any hesitation.
Would have liked a few hooks on which to hang clothes in the bedroom and more accessible mirror when drying hair - but they are just minor issues.

Suzanne was a great host at the hotel in making us all feel welcome and at home for our stay The location was great even though it was at the bottom end of the island it was very easy to get around the island sight seeing and having The Murray Arms as a base Very dog friendly and even allowed in the restaurant Breakfast was excellent 👌 we had the 'Scrambled eggs and Smoked Salmon' a few times as it was delicious and 'Porridge' plus 'Bacon Egg and Mushroom Bap' other morning. The room was clean and enough room for us 2 with our 3 springers The bed was super comfy Plenty of tea and coffee making facilities Parking for 3 cars around the back plus street parking - we visited before 1st April start of season so no problem parking We will return to experience the Seafood Platter and Stayover again plus pre booking some island hopping on the next visit
Restaurant being closed for our stay however it did save us a lot of money as we would have most likely had the Seafood Platter every night !!! 1st April is the start of the season !

Location was an excellent base to explore the island and very close to the ferry terminal. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. The bar and restaurant were busy so I really appreciated the telephone call from the lovely manager Suzanne to ask if we wanted to eat in the restaurant that night and to book us a table, which was just as well cos it ended up being fully booked. So we got the try the seafood platter that the hotel is renowned for and we were so pleased we did ! Huge, fresh and very very tasty ! The breakfast followed the trend, never had a bigger or filling packed omelette ! Fresh muffins and delicious coffee ! All in all could not fault it !
Despite the notice on the landing door, people can’t close doors quietly ! Obviously not the hotels fault though.

The restaurant at the Murray Arms is the focal point of the hotel, and in the evening serves an excellent mainly fish menu. The food we has was all locally caught and was superb. The staff could not have been kinder or more helpful, and managed to find us a room for a second night when our ferry back to the mainland was cancelled because of poor weather.
The Hotel car park is limited to only 3 cars, and parking outside is difficult as the hotel is in an historic part of the village with narrow streets.

We were staying in one of the smaller rooms and it was bigger than I expected, it had been tastefully decorated and was very comfortable. The staff are just lovely so friendly and caring towards their guests, it a real treat to stay here. The included breakfast is well worth getting up for , I highly recommend the scrambled eggs and smoked salmon We booked to have an evening meal and if you are a fish/ seafood lover, you must try the restaurant, so fresh and tasty. I will be staying here next time I’m back in Orkney

The staff at Murray Arms Hotel were exceptionally attentive and accommodating. Our bedroom was immaculate, newly decorated, bright, and very comfortable. Though the bathroom was compact, it was efficiently organized. Murray Arms is renowned for its cuisine, and it lived up to its reputation. As a couple with different dietary preferences - one seafood lover and one vegetarian - we were both delighted with the variety and quality of our meals. In fact, we left feeling pleasantly overfed! :-)

The hotel and rstaurant were lovely, all the staff were very nice, freindly and welcoming. The hotel and restaurant were spotlessly clean. The bedrooms had good quality furniture, fixtures and fittings. They had original paintings on the walls by a loval artist. The menu was fantastic as were the meals. Good quality locally sourced seafood, vegetables and meat. The chef is very talented. I can't fault anything, very highly recommended. Can't wait to go back. Thank you everyone, John.

A lovely, cozy hotel with well-equipped rooms and excellent breakfast. The staff were welcoming and fun, and the rooms had everything one would need – bed, TV, bathroom with shower, tea and coffee, plenty of storage space. Though staples for hotel rooms, these were all very nice extras after days of staying in hostels and ferries/trains, not to mention that this is an inn in a tiny Scottish island village! The breakfast was better than we could have ever expected, with a range of options cooked to order – smoked salmon scrambled eggs, omelette, porridge, etc. All very fresh and tasty! We did not try out the seafood restaurant but we're sure it would have been delicious too. Overall, a very pleasant stay and we were taken care of very well!
