The location of the hotel was excellent, very convenient to walk to nearby attractions. The hotel was clean and very well maintained.

We got twin beds instead of a double. Breakfast was better last time and now it’s switched to part cooked part buffet - and the wait was rather long for cooked, so i’d prefer continental again.

Having read mixed reviews, I wasn't sure what to expect when we booked to stay here for two nights. What we found was a hotel that was being thoughtfully ran and gradually updated/upgraded while maintaining the character and features of a hotel established in the 1700's. Great location, lovely grounds, lots of character. The full English breakfast was immense and our evening meal in the restaurant was excellent. The staff were efficient, extremely polite, pleasant and helpful. The internal layout of the hotel was interesting as you would expect given it's age, with wide staircases and rooms going off in different directions, but a great sense of light and space. The bar was lovely with piano and open fire.

It may not be to everyone's taste. Our junior suite while spacious, tastefully decorated, clean and comfortable, the wardrobes were tired and had seen better days and the old meets new vibe sometimes doesn't quite hit the spot. Having said that, I loved it here and it made a change from some of the samey, soulless more modern establishments. We didn't use the spar and at -4° outside, decided against a dip in the geothermal outdoor pool, however, it looked charming and we will definitely give it a try next time, as we will definitely be coming back here.

Clean, comfortable, in a great location to the nearby town of Matlock bath itself and also within walking distance of Matlock town centre too. The new owners are doing a great job, throughout. I love the mix of up to date modern bathrooms alongside period bedrooms. The staff are all very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The chef pulled out all the stops on New Years Eve when we’d planned on going into town for a meal and drinks but the awful weather changed our plans and last minute he managed to sort us two filet steaks even though the restaurant was full, compliments to the chef as our meal was fabulous. In my opinion the Hotel has fallen into the best hands it could have. Given time it will only get better and better. Good luck going forward and hopefully we’ll be able to come for a stay in summer.

The room and reception were very clean and welcoming. I loved the outdoor area and to pool. The staff were helpful and friendly. The room being serviced every day was a nice surprise, too. The spa was nice. And the 11am check out is great.

The hotel is very tired, it needs a massive modernisation. No hair dryer in the room was a disappointment, and no products in the spa shower was a letdown. My main complaint is the noise at night. Soft close doors are needed. The doors banging throughout the hotel meant I didn't get the sleep I badly needed, which was the reason I booked 2 nights there alone.

Breakfast was great. Shame about some of the rude guests who upset a waitress. Location was fab! Loved the pool.

The staff were really helpful - they made sure our family party (12 of us in all) were welcome and comfortable, and that the meal we had in the Derwent room (private to the party) was really special. We had gathered for a 90th birthday weekend, and thanks to the kindness and helpfulness of the staff it was a great success! Most of us had at least one swim and the lifeguard was really helpful and enthusiastic about the idea. The meals were outstanding and very nicely presented.

At the time we visited the new owners didn't have a license to serve alcohol, although i'm sure that has been fixed now. Otherwise it was all great.

Swimming pool is large and has a disabled lane for swimming by yourself. Quite a quiet hotel which is nice if you have neuro diversity an sensitivitys to noise. Spa is nice has large selection of treatments an sauna steam room an jacuzzi are nice to use. Cream tea is excellent all the meal times are worth trying. Will definitely be back.

Stayed here before and returned confident that we would be happy and we were. After a seven hour bike ride to reach the hotel we were greeted very warmly and our room was clean and warm - as we had expected it to be.It was incredibly quiet all night - even though some celebrations were happening that evening- they promptly stopped at a decent hour. We stayed in the annexe overlooking the pool which was perfect to house our bikes on the balcony overnight.Its probably the quietest hotel we have ever slept in even though it is quite close to a main road.Highly recommend this quaint hotel for a stop I Erin some of the most beautiful walking and cycling countryside.

The room could do with updating for the price - a new carpet instead of the stained old one for example and the blinds were broken but were easily repaired. For the price it should include continental breakfast. Inspite of this the peaceful location outweighed any minor issues.

Breakfast was very good and the location was easy to walk to and from the Matlock Bath railway station, approximately 14-17 minutes. Staff were friendly. Only stayed 1 night and had to go to a friend's wedding during the evening /night so didn't get chance to try the swimming pool or the spa but would like to next time. View of the pool from the balcony was good. Having a portable heater in the room and spare fan in cupboard was considerate.

Room itself a bit run down, but bed was super comfy and room was clean. We forgot to ask for a teaspoon or stirrer for the hot drinks in the room though but still managed.
