I enjoy historic places, and Western House, built around 1871 certainly qualifies. The rooms are large and very comfortable. We had the lounge with its wood fire to ourselves. The host stored our bikes overnight in a garage. The breakfast portions were generous and bacon and eggs were on offer. Being in a rural setting, there were many animals around the house that children would probably enjoy.
There was a minor communication issue with the cook, who lives locally, over the cooked breakfast timing but the continental breakfast that we had expected was available, and the hiccup didn't detract at all from the enjoyment of our stay.

We had such a wonderful stay at Western House. We booked it the night before after a few nights camping with our toddler, and we needed some R&R! We booked the studio which was so lovely and homely, with a great en suite and shower and access to own small back garden. We were greeted by Linda who took our son to feed the chickens, which he absolutely loved. The home made breakfast in the morning was also delightful. All in all, we were over the moon to stay here and hope we can come back again one day!

The hosts were down to earth people and very accommodating. The heritage listed house offered history of the region, piano and open fire in the sitting room, baby chickens in the garden to entertain and exceptional food. Home-made bread, peaches from the tree and an opportunity for some social interaction with other guests.
The stairs are narrow and steep, if you have an upstairs room.

John and Lynda were excellent hosts, very knowledgeable about the history of the property. The breakfast and other 'treats' that were provided exceeded our expectations and I strongly recommend the evening meal. This is an excellent place to stay if you are doing the Alps to Ocean trail, with a hearty breakfast and the option of the evening meal, a garage for your bike, and comfortable rooms. John kept the fire going which was much appreciated.

We have travelled extensively around the world however I would have to say the stay here was beyond expectation. We just loved Lynda and John... the hospitality, food, room, private bathroom, excellent wifi, hostory lessons and the of course the great conversation and laughs we had. John and my husband went fishing together and when we left they even left us an amazing coffee and homemade sandwhich for the road. How sweet and geez it was delicious too. I am vegetarian and these beautiful hosts went above and beyond to accomodate my preferences.... I am most grateful and I would highly recommend this lovely historic B&B to anyone thinking of stopping over in Kurow. Thank you Thank you Thank you xxx

A night at Western House was perfect for us to break up our journey back to Christchurch from down south. Lynda and John were so accommodating - they even provided toys for our 18 month old! Our son loved meeting the ducks and other animals (as did we!) and we really enjoyed learning more about the local area from John. The breakfast was generous and delicious. We stayed in the studio and it was roomy enough for a cot to fit (which Western House was able to provide). It really felt like home and we'll remember our stay fondly.

Western House is a beautiful old property. The owners are wonderful hosts, and the breakfast will set you up for the day. The property is a little out of the town of Kurow but there is plenty of car parking, and it would only be a few minutes peddling on a bike to Kurow.
It would not be a problem for most people and to be expected with older houses but the guest rooms are up a flight of stairs. John was wonderful about bringing my bags up and down the stairs so it wasn't a big problem.

The hosts are really lovely people. Friendly, pleasant and helpful. Generous breakfast provided in the dining room. Hot egg/bacon , cereals, toast, pancakes tea, coffee etc.
I was disappointed that the bathroom with our room was not actually connected to the room, it was across the hall which, while very close by, felt a bit public. Other rooms did have proper ensuite bathrooms. The room has a steeply sloping roof that I hit my head on badly three times (I have compromised eyesight) before I worked out how to avoid it. The bed was quite hard so I did not sleep well.

Very traditional house. Hospitality is amazing from John and Lynda. I and my family was so satisfied with their hospitality and kindness. Room is very cozy and area is peaceful around. We also booked dinner dining and Lynda was focused on health and freshness. Definitely visit again!

I always like traditional B&B and this fitted the image perfectly; friendly welcoming hosts who interact with the guests, a traditional property with a guest lounge to meet other travelers and a terrific breakfast.
The ducks and hens with their young were great, but be in for an early wake up call if you're in the garden room at the back!
