I love the faded grandeur of the building. It was warm and comfortable.
Unfortunately breakfast on Sunday morning was a shambles. People were queuing for self service food but it was virtually empty. It took 15 mins for the eggs to arrive. There were no croissants or pastries. Guest were having to stack dirty pots on other tables in order to have a table to sit at. Far from the normal standard and we have stayed there 3 times this year. The bar was very poorly stocked no gin or brandy . My sister asked for an extra pillow as she only had one, it never arrived. Very disappointing

We love the hotel for a short or long break when our adult children can join us. Although new owners, it’s still like coming home.
It’s the same old story throughout the hotel and dinning venues wherever we seem to go these days. We feel oh so sorry for the staff on duty; taking it on the chin for poor management in regard of “UNDERSTAFFING” Almost everywhere, since COVID has changed to having the bare minimum of staff on duty. Economy cutting will work for a time. As a family, we don’t go out staying and dinning as much as we would do- due to that problem greeting us almost everywhere. When I’m out relaxing; I don’t want to wait for extra hours for service that is coming from a person who’s obviously killing themselves trying to cover up incompetence from their superiors in management or ownership. Well done all staff who work their socks if for poor leadership.

Peaceful atmosphere, clean, comfortable and the staff are gorgeous. I've been visiting the Orwell for nearly 40 years now and all the staff, from management to housekeeping seem to be hand picked for the amazing qualities they all display. The food is top quality, the waiting staff are lovely, front of house always has polite, professional, knowledgeable staff and your housekeeping staff (Those rarely seen or heard) are extremely thorough and hardworking. Everyone works as part of the 'Orwell Team' that keeps the hotel running smoothly. Your hotel staff efficient and helpful which is why your reputation will remain impeccable.
Err... You got me there!

Lovely character hotel, with a Country house feel ,but if you are looking for modern all singing and dancing hotel, this is probably not for you. Despite some reviews,we didn’t see any spaces on walls where pictures have been removed ,nor shabby carpets etc. Just old fashioned comfort. Had a nice cream tea in the garden as weather good and location excellent for access to the town, which is walking distance. Plenty of free parking on site. Our room was big and spacious with a good sized bathroom. Clean throughout.
Although a nice room,it was very warm at all times. Staff generally pleasant and helpful, if not always too professional but several seem to be in training,so don’t know if there is a large turnover. Although reception supposed to be manned all the time, this was not the case and usually guests waiting to get attention. Room not cleaned daily and waste paper bins not emptied at all during four night stay, nor towels changed, although left in heap to change,as wet. Very little emphasise on the food, much more could be done with this side of the hospitality.

The property itself has a lot of character and the public areas were spacious, varied and welcoming. The room we stayed in was fairly large and clean with all the usual items wardrobe, tv, kettle etc and 2 chairs - always a plus when there are two of you. The bed was very comfortable if a little warm for our liking but a fan was provided and the room was quiet. The bathroom was adequate.
Due to the age of the property we felt that the rooms are probably in need of a much awaited makeover. The furniture is fairly dated and looks difficult to keep clean and there were several cracked areas on the walls and paintwork. In addition the electric sockets are never where you need them (next to the bed or mirror). The milk, tea etc provided were on a shelf in such a position that they were in direct sunlight for most of the day which is obviously not a good place. The bathroom was large and had a decent sink and toilet but the fan did not work and the lighting was very subdued. The shower did work well considering it ran off the bath taps but as it was over the bath the area around was only half tiled causing the paint to peel off.

Very clean room. Intelligent heating system. First class and comfortable bed (best bed I have used in a long time). Good facilities, kettle plus tea bags and coffee. Modern and well placed TV plus TV remote with fresh batteries. Good and free running curtains. Overall a very impressive room.
Bathroom and shower both very clean and well laid out. However like many hotels I have stayed in over the years, NO HANDRAILS in the shower. I regard these as very important, especially if you are trying to save oneself from a nasty fall and possible broken bones. I should explain that this applies to most hotels that I have stayed in UK. In France, Germany, Italy, Spain and other EU countries they make attempts at 'handrails'. Apart from this First class bathroom and shower.

Reading previous poor reviews I was shocked because my experience was very very good. Everything I could ask for in a hotel Large room, plenty of space for storage and luggage A window that opens Plenty of lights and sockets Full length mirror Large kettle Large mugs, all conveniently.placed for use Large tv(.that works) Wifi( that actually connected) Comfy bed, extra pillows Perfect room temp A window that opens! A bath tub.Good shower, instant hot water Large bath towels Great location opposite the rail station The receptionist who checked us in was friendly and welcoming All ingredients together made for a relaxing stay.Really good value for money
Yes the room decor was a little dated, bathroom tile were circa 1070 style but so what.In another 50 years they will be desirable. The outside of the building ( facing the road) could do with some money spent

The Hotel was situated in a good location for the seafront, shops were close by as well as the railway station which was over the road, the shower was excellent,.
The room was not what we expected, i paid for a suite with separate dining area but ended up with what I would describe as a superior double room even though it was described on the door as a suite, I complained about this but was fobbed off with it being the fault of booking.com even though I showed them the booking which stated a suite with a separate dining area which our room never had, this trip was booked as a Birthday surprise for my wife so I wasn't overly impressed.

Good for us for situation. Room was comfortable and there was very good parking facilities. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast supplied covered all one could normally need with a very efficient supervision.
The shower in the room was a drencher, a huge shower head 8 feet up and soaked everything. OK once, but who wants to be half drowned every time one has a shower before going to bed or indeed first thing in morning and who wants to wash their hair every time they wash. No grab rail either in spite of us asking for one if possible making us feel very unsafe in using the shower, especially as the non slip thingy was so small and the surrounding floor so slippery. Perhaps there was no such room available for our time there.

The room was warm and a good size, big bathroom, lovely toiletries, good amount of tea and coffee. We enjoyed the buffet breakfast and there's a good time allocated so it didn't get too busy. All the staff were really welcoming, polite and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. They said they want to make sure all their guests are happy and we certainly were. Excellent value for money and we will be back again - thank you everyone at The Orwell for a great weekend 🥰 This was our second stay here and we weren't disappointed 😀
Mattresses were a bit soft.
