Just returned following a three night stay at the Royal Castle , in part an opportunity to celebrate the new year in Devon. It was a return visit for us, though our last stay was nearly 14 years ago !!! In truth little has changed. The hotel is somewhat 'quirky' with creaking floorboards and a very eclectic collection of art and artefacts all of which adds to the charm of the place. Location is perfect overlooking the River Dart with the town centre behind the hotel. There are two separate bars on the ground floor both popular with guests at the hotel and locals. The restaurant for breakfast and evening meals is on the first floor, though snacks and meals can be ordered in the bar. The choice at breakfast is excellent and there is a decent evening menu too. Our room, was very big with a super king size bed and a large bathroom with bath and shower and nice toiletries. Best of all are the staff who were without exception friendly and welcoming. I would recommend to anyone wanting a stay in an unpretentious hotel in the centre of Dartmouth

The location is right in the middle of town and in easy reach of everything. The hotel is an historic building and very characterful thus no lifts and creaking floor boards all adding to the feeling. The staff were very professional and welcoming, our room No 2 was perfect with a view of the small harbour and river, with a large spa bath and large shower. The bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was superb with a good choice of breakfast food. Dinner in the bar/restaurant was excellent with very attentive staff. We loved the hotel and our stay - a big thank you.

Parking, the hotel doesn't have its own parking and close by parking is limited to 1 hour between 9 am and 6 pm. There is pay to park within a short walk. We have a blue badge and parked just across the road on double yellow lines with no problem.

The hotel is in a perfect location right on the marina front. It has maintained all its original features and is very quirky. Our room was beautiful. I had originally booked an attic room but have recently had hip replacement surgery so called to ask about the stairs to the attic room. The girl I spoke to immediately changed our room to one on a lower floor. We chatted about how it was a belated birthday treat because I’d had surgery. When we arrived at our room there was a card and a bottle of Prosecco. A very thoughtful touch. We had evening meal in the hotel restaurant which was very good quality and good service and breakfast was delicious.

Nothing.

Very lovely 2 night weekend stay in January. Staff were friendly, efficient and accommodating right from the time of booking to checking out. Great room with a great view over looking the river. The hotel is full of interesting things to look at and the staircases are a sight to see. Ate there both nights and the food was very good. Advise to book a table as is popular with what seemed to be guests and locals. Surrounding area is lovely plenty to see and do even out of season. Hope to return again.

Nothing, it was a perfect stay.

Great location in the middle of beautiful Dartmouth. Good breakfast. Loved the history of the building, originally being 4 merchant houses at the back with an Inn at the front and central courtyard. Staff great. Nice toiletries, coffee, biscuits and water in room.

Lots of stairs as we had the top attic room with sloping ceilings, especially shower, no view. Generally quiet but could hear guests in the next attic room. Rooms due for a refit very soon and I’m sure it will be amazing. Would stay again when updated.

Lovely oldy worldy property with wood floors and creaking stairs. Traditional pub and restaurant with great food and service. The real jewel in the crown was the way they treat dogs! They clearly love having them stay as in our dog friendly room- which was still very lovely for humans, we found a beautiful hessian bag containing treats, a ball, poo bags, food and water bowls and a Proper Job beer for both the dog and for us! Plus a lovely comfy dog bed and towel. Totally unnecessary but so very kind and special, especially for us as it was our first trip away with our very nervous dog that had just lost her dog brother. It meant a lot to us too as it was also our first trip away without him too so very bittersweet. Another thing I was really impressed with was the hotel breakfast. Just lovely with fresh fruit, fresh cafetière coffee, cereals, gorgeous pastries as well as a full menu of cooked breakfasts to choose from which were included in our booking price. Sadly we had horrendous weather on the one day in July we decided to have a night away so couldn’t get out and about much but we will definitely re-book and come to stay again as Dartmouth is beautiful! Thank you to everyone there.

No lifts- not a problem for us but anyone older may struggle- though I’m sure the hotel would find a room in a lower floor if possible for you. One tiny gripe- my fish was served on a wooden board and to be honest it was really off putting to see a whole fish presented on essentially a chopping board. We laughed it off at the time but I was a bit bewildered as if you can put potatoes and salad in ceramic bowls on the board- why not just put the fish on a plate? I wouldn’t order it again. But of course this is just my opinion.

We loved the four poster room on the top floor. Quiet and comfy with quality tea and coffee in the room. The breakfast was great, plenty to choose from including the continental self serve. We had evening meals there to, also a nice selection cooked to order. All the staff were friendly and helpful (especially where to park as we had never been to Dartmouth before). We loved the quirkyness and decor in the hotel, right up our street! Everything was on our doorstep, shops, cafes and the stunning river.

One of my bug bears wherever we stay is the dreaded milk sachets/pots! The hotel provided quality tea and coffee in the room so fresh milk in a little fridge would have been a nice touch.

Wonderful location with view of the river from our window. The building is interesting - really part of old Dartmouth. We had a priests hole in our room, which was a first for us ! The staff were helpful and friendly. Breakfast was delicious and we had two good dinners down in the bar.

One slight problem was that the property are unable to store any cases on your departure day .( This is the only time we have encountered this , in any hotel). We were travelling on this short break by train so had to spend the morning with our bags , which limited what we could do. We were informed about this after we had booked , so just had to make the best of it !

Location was perfect, very central. Parking isn’t great in Dartmouth, constantly balancing 1, 2 and 4 hour parking slots. No hotel parking. Hotel was nice. Room decor was a little tired, bathroom def in need of an upgrade. I know the hotel have a re-furb planned for the winter. Fire alarm went off multiple times. Receptionist was transactional without really being friendly. Room was a good size, building had lots of character. Breakfast and breakfast service very good.

Decor in room was old and tired.

I loved the place and my room, so much character. I was on the top floor and my room was very cosy. The bed was great, I had a spa bath and I give much appreciation for the coffee machine. Lots of little thought out details, lovely staff, nice view, good breakfast and lovely bar downstairs. Would definitely stay again.

I don't really have anything negative to say. The church (next door) chimes on the hour kept me awake all night but that has nothing to do with the hotel and doesn't influence my review.
