We enjoyed the gluten free meals on offer and the staff's knowledge of this was great. The staff were so very helpful and pleasant and we had a lovely housekeeping lady who was extremely nice and helpful. The hotel is centrally located in Welshpool and is within walking distance of local amenities and the beautiful Powys castle which is a must for all if you choose to visit here. A car is necessary for travel to the beautiful hamlets and villages outside of town or to visit the picturesque town of Shrewsbury which is approximately 20 miles away from Welshpool but certainly worth a visit. There is a rail service to this but due to maintenance issues this was not running during our visit but a bus service was in place.

The hotel as it is a listed/historical building does not have a lift and the stairs are steep which may cause issues for travellers with mobility problems. It is a dog friendly hotel, so if you're allergic to dogs this may be an issue, however the hotel provided separate dining areas for guests with pets and for those without.

Room 215 on the top floor was a family room . Clean and spacious with interesting views and very warm. .was like a small suite with separate bedroom. .Well worth the money . Parking was ample and easy and free . . Breakfast was as expected with a good selection of pastries and cooked breakfasts . .staff pleasant and helpful . 🙂 Didn't realise you could walk from Welshpool to Powis castle through the beautiful grounds, only about twenty minutes gentle walk . Winner . 🏆

Room 215 bathroom was a little small and the sealant and grouting not the best and the shower curtain was grubby . But was clean and functional and we enjoyed a lovely hot bath . 🛀

Absolutely everything except.... see below...

... the all important first impression in a situation which must occur very frequently, namely, when my partner jumped out of the car at the roadside to go into the hotel to enquire as to how the car-park was accessed, to be met by two junior staff who tried to be helpful, but felt they ought to leave the official explanation to a large gentleman (wearing a badge stating Trainee Assistant Manager) who apparently chided them for distracting him while he, meanwhile, was saying he would attend to the matter once he had finished what he was doing. Not a good first impression.

A nice old coaching modernised to include ensuite rooms and with a bar and restaurant that still provides for the locals but mainly for the hotel residents. Located in the centre of Welshpool and in easy walking distance of the railway station.

The wi-fi is in need of upgrading. Given how important a good quality wi-fi is to travellers these days, it only vaguely worked and then slowly and didn't work with some devises. Even in the hotel restaurant it was patchy. I hope to read that it has been upgraded before my next stay. Otherwise, nothing else of note.

Interesting quirky building in a location which suited our plans. The dinner was well cooked. Nice selection of vegetables. There is a well assorted choice for breakfast better than the average with fresh fruit and non 'full English' options.

It would have been very useful if the hotel response message had included car parking information as this is not obvious and is awkward, Some information can be found on their website under 'contact us' but one don't necessary look there before going.

The bed was comfy, the room and bathroom were both clean and spacious. Staff were friendly and helpful. Open fires were great and the beer was good. The bar meal was mostly good: they were very flexible in changing chips to mash and peas to salad for me, but the falafel salad lacked flavour.

Breakfast wasn't great for the price. The breakfast on the bar brunch menu seemed better value (for example it said the bacon was smoked whereas the breakfast provided to guests was not). The heated towel rail in the bathroom wasn't working.

Good location right in centre of town, free parking available on site with control barrier, gate locked over night. Comfortable beds, nice toiletries, our room had a bath which is always a plus. Juice, fruit salad and some cereal, more cooked breakfast options and plenty of choice on evening meal menu, picked seasonal options, all very good.Nice comfy bar, serving the usual, also afternoon tea options .Friendly staff.Has a function suite at rear, but given the the location of our room, we experienced no disturbance.

The exceptional thing at this hotel was the care and attention of the staff. Otherwise as this is an old building with twisting corridors I was surprised to find such a lovely bedroom with many extras eg a radio and inside shutters on the windows to keep out traffic noise.

There is no lift or downstairs bedroom for people with mobility issues. Installing either of these in this building may not be possible. The food, though not exceptional, was good.

Mandy (I think) was a delight to meet and greet us. Had a few chats before we left, very friendly and funny and gave us some great tips and advice. Decor and bedroom facilities were great with plenty of space and storage. Comfy bed.

A second person (male) poked his head around the corner whilst Mandy was checking if our room was ready (we were approx 1 hour early) and asked if we were being seen to. We said yes and advised him that mandy was checking if our room was ready. He abruptly just no, it's not ready and walked off. We also overheard him in the lounge area disagreeing with another customer regarding a different pub/ hotel nearby serving food after 3pm. He was quite rude to be honest.

We were greeted outside by a Manager and given directions to the car park which was helpful. The check in was great, very friendly. The room was everything that we needed, although it was on 2nd floor and there were a few steps en route to the room. It was not a problem for me, but worth bearing in mind. Breakfast was really nice and in a lovely environment. The hotel is highly recommended.

The room was on the top floor and was really very hot. It was a hot day and there was a fan provided. This is an observation rather than an issue.
