The hot baths were not what we hoped for.

The room was huge, We were able to spread out quite comfortably and had ample space to organize our luggage. The room also had a small balcony that overlooked a river that had cherry blossom trees in bloom along it. Overall it was a very relaxing atmosphere. We had the breakfast included option and I was quite surprised at the portion size served. There were a couple days I couldn't finish it (though I don't usually have breakfast so my appetite might be a little small) but my partner seemed satisfied. Every morning was a different breakfast for us, which we appreciated. It was mainly Japanese style food with some Western touches. This ryokan is deep in the country in a small, quiet area. There are three or four onsens within walking distance, as well as a small hike with a view of the bay in the distance. There is a community center/onsen newly built about a 10 minute walk away with nice facilities and extremely cheap E-Bike rental. We had a lot of fun biking around the full bloom cherry blossom trees and small residential streets. I really enjoyed the onsen water here as well. It almost feels slippery and your skin and hair feel super smooth after bathing.

The building is obviously very old, so there is some random damage/maintenance issues. When we checked in, the bathroom vanity had one light out and another light that was very dim but suddenly on the last night they decided to change the lightbulbs so it was fixed for 12 hours of our stay. It struck me as strange it took them this long to notice something that should have been checked prior to our check in. Another weird thing was that the lights in the hallways are kept off most of the time. During the day it was fine (and I fully understand saving electricity if it's bright out) but it can be quite dark in the evening when heading back to your room. We also had trouble the last night of our stay with noisy guests. They were yelling in the onsen and letting their children run around so I couldn't really relax. I thought I could go back to my room and enjoy the quiet but was woken up in the night by people running in the hallway, yelling, banging into walls, etc. so it really soured my experience a bit. Finally, while the staff at check in were great, we ran into trouble with some of the other staff during our stay. At breakfast, we had a day where they forgot part of our meal and we had to remind them to bring it. This was not a big problem for us, but I did notice this happening to other guests too. On our second day when we returned from going out we were harassed by the front desk staff yelling at us across the lobby asking what room we were in. They tried to play it off as asking us what time we wanted breakfast the next day, but we had already told them that information when we checked in the day before. I thought maybe they just ask us every day?, but they didn't ask us again after that, so it seems obvious they were just suspicious of us for whatever reason. It made me feel very unwelcome and came off as extremely rude.
