A quirky, characterful old building, located next door to an old Abbey with a long history (religion, prison, art galleryetc.) which is well worth exploring. Think more upmarket Chambre d'hote than boutique hotel. Buildings and furnishings are all delightful old antiques. Excellent evening meal and a very good breakfast.

Be aware that some of the rooms are approached by a narrow set of outside steps, which might be a challenge for the less than active, especially when wet.

Atmospheric, historic, comfortable and warm on a damp, miserable day. Location in lovely village. Comfy bed. Excellent (albeit expensive) evening meal, beautifully cooked. Good breakfast.

Expensive by comparison with other comparable properties recently stayed in. No shower gel or shampoo in bathroom - the only property in recent experience not to provide toiletries. No wifi in our room. Access to bedrooms would be difficult for those with mobility issues.

What an amazing historic building. This was an exceptional place to stay, steeped in history and yet still with all the comfort that you need when travelling through France. Add to this the delicious evening meal and a great breakfast with fresh bread, local meats and cheese, croissants with homemade jams all eaten in a medieval dining hall with tapestries and furnished in keeping with the age of the building. Great choice of wines as well. A true historic experience and one that we will definitely be repeating next year.

There was nothing that we disliked.

Everything was great! Especially the hospitality of Romain and Anne-Maria hard warming. You feld immediately at home, in the beautiful Auberge and incredible nature. To have total silence in the woods is overwhelming. We wish Anne-Maria and Romain all the best in the future, don’t change anything as Romain rightly stated 🙏

The menu could change a bit more during the week

Lovely historic stone property with bags of character. Welcoming staff. Room was nice and cool and very comfortable bed. Tea/coffee and mini bar provided. We enjoyed an excellent evening meal, good choice and varied wine list. Location was ideal for us.

The bathroom arrangement is not ideal - large bath with handheld shower. Installing a blind on the window would also provide a little more privacy (!). There is no TV or WIFI in the room (but this didn't bother us).

Fabulous character property with original medieval features, feels like you are stepping back in time. Set in an interesting medieval village. Bedroom was large, warm and comfortable, and super quiet. Owners very welcoming. e erything was spotlessly clean - quite an achievement in such an old property. Very pleasant 4-course traditional French dinner in lovely dining room with open fire.

Minor issues only. The breakfast was quite minimalist, but sufficient for us - croissant and bread with jams and cheese/ham. Lovely fresh coffee. The en-suite had no separate shower, just a handheld in the bath, probably because of the low ceiling height. Hot water was not up to full temperature when we arrived, but was fine in the morning. A deep shelf over the bathroom sink made shaving tricky - this could be easily replaced with a narrower one. There was no Wi-fi or TV in the room, but this didn’t bother us. Anyone with mobility issues should be aware there are several steps and heavy doors to navigate between the bedroom and dining room in the main building.

This property is located in the most tranquil and picturesque village, surrounded by rolling countryside. A veritable gem, with outstanding cooking and hospitality. Ana Maria could not have been more welcoming, a perfect host.

Actually the Auberge exceeded all expectations, and we loved it all. There was nothing that could have been better. The dinner was truly outstanding.

Our stay was fantastic! The food was incredible and Maria the host was wonderful and extremely friendly.

The only negative was the comfort of the beds. The beds were really hard and I woke up with uncomfortable backache. Beds are always a matter of personal preference so this might not be the experience of all of the guests.

The authentic French charm, situated in an ancient building next to a Cistercian abbey made this a truly unique place to visit. Warm, quirky and comfortable, our hostess was charming and a delicious meal in the dining hall restaurant by a blazing log fire was the highlight.

The 17th Century layout and staircases could be challenging for people with mobility issues.

The Auberge is close to the autoroute, therefore many people will use it for a one-night stop. However we stayed for 4 nights to explore the charming upper reaches of the River Aube, and during that time our hosts gently and tactfully entered into our experience, suggesting and writing down places we might like to visit. It is in an old building associated with the Abbey, so as you see on the website each room is different, and this is not Campanile or Ibis, but the facilities are just as good, and the attention is much more personal. The meals were good for the price. I would have had more wine if it was a little less money! I think the very high markups on wine in restaurants are a disincentive, and they would make more sales (and margin) overall if they reduced the price of wine. The environment at l'Abbatiale is completely calm and peaceful, no noise, in the small village of Auberive, right next to the old abbey. There is a village shop. We recommend staying for more than one night. Unless the owners reply to the contrary, I would say, as other reviewers have, that to stay here you do need to be able to climb steps. We loved our stay, and would like to thank the hosts for our time in l'Abbatiale.

No complaints at all, we loved our stay here.
