We drove to Ormiston House, Strahan from Cradle Mountain having spent the morning viewing the sights. We were met by Rose, the owner, who sat us down and briefed us on our room and got the details from each of us on what we would like for our specially tailored continental breakfast and what time we would like it. It was as if we were being introduced to an exclusive club, and this continued when Rose showed us our room, the Amelia Room with its bathroom with its claw foot bath overlooking the gardens. After checking in to the room we then were met by Rose's husband Terry, who greeted us with a glass of wine and talked us through the history of the Ormiston Family and the house and their connections with Strahan and nearby Queenstown, he then walked us through the house explaining its features and took us up into the tower to see the view and also view artefacts relating to the Ormiston family that he had collected and arranged in the tower room. We marvelled that each guest received a similar greeting and briefing. It set the standard for our three night stay. We were told about the Gordon River cruise which we had already booked, and also about the play which was staged each evening on the amphitheatre on the waterfront. It told the story of 10 convicts who working as boatbuilders highjacked the boat and sailed it to Chile. It has been running for some 30 years and each night's production is a world-record for an Australian play, only of course to be broken the following night. We were punchdrunk after all of this, but Ormiston and its grounds at No. 1 The Esplanade is the perfect place and perfect setting to explore Strahan, its harbour, the Gordon River, the wilderness, a trip on the Wilderness Railway to Queenstown.

Staying in this grand residence with long historical connections to Strahan was an experience. The property is close to Strahan's tourist hub and has plenty of dining options nearby. Handy to the Strahan wharf and bases for the two excellent Gordon River cruises. Very peaceful location with garden surroundings. Excellent continental breakfast with options available to suit needs.
We experienced some Wifi connection issues during part of our stay. The property is currently for sale and could use some updates once the future is decided. Beds all appeared to be double size - may be a little short for some...

An old historic homestead. Plenty of surrounding space and a quiet location. Good size room and a comfortable bed. Small toilet cubicle in a corner of the room. spa bath in another corner, over which was the shower and a basin beside that - a little difficult to get into safely. Original or authentic fittings throughout the premises. Breakfast was excellent with a great choice of fresh and quality options. Terry, the owner, offered a tour of the premises and a talk about the long history of the house and previous owners, over a complimentary drink. The heating was good and overall, a pleasant stay on a wild, wet and windy night in Strahan.
Prefer a separate shower.

Wonderfully restored old house with period furnishings. Interesting old photos and other items on the way up to the widow's walk on roof top, from where one can appreciate the size of the house. Generous continental breakfast. Spacious rooms and ensuite bathrooms. Nice grounds with trees around the house.
It was a bit cold in the dining area. It would be nice if guests were provided with a summary of the history of the house.

Quaint old house with a wonderful breakfast catered and responsive staff.
Main light in the bedroom room was out of order. Two battery lights were provided but they were not bright enough for reading.

Magnificent turn of the century mansion (1900s) with excellent hosts Peter and Rose. We were warmly greeted on arrival, pointed towards Strahan restaurants and attractions, entertained with the history of the house over drinks, and very well fed each morning. The location is central and we easily walked to our Gordon River cruise and The Ship That Never Was pantomine.

The location was excellent. The staff were excellent and very obliging and friendly and the breakfast was really great. The grounds were beautifully maintained and the vista from the hotel was stunning.
Being a very old building there were some maintenance issues needing attending to. The bathroom door did not close properly and the toilet seat would not stay up. There were no tissues and only one roll of toilet paper.

Beautiful furnishings and a great sense of history. Each room was differently furnished and was quite lovely.
The lighting in our room was really bad. We couldn’t see to read at all. There were several light fixtures but even together, the light was on the dark side of dim. Some rooms seemed better lit. Otherwise comfortable and attractive.

Loved our stay here. The owner made us feel very welcome with a tour of the house and explaining the history of this magnificant building, and the town. Nice public areas, rooms are big, lush, and historical. Heated sheets was really nice. Really enjoyed the big healthy breakfast... lots of options we love.
Everything exceeded our expectations.

Terry and Rose were great hosts and most friendly. They know the area and give good advice. Terry gives a great talk of the history of the house and family. Strahan is not big so the house is in walking distance of most things. They offer a continental breakfast, it is not small so is more than enough to set you up for the day until lunch. Make sure you go up stairs to see the little history of the house.
