This time I stayed two days in the Villa it was breathtaking - beautiful spacious - well ventilated - peaceful - beautiful art - loved the walk-in closet, the big pool outside fabulous , that swinging special chair in the shade outside in the villa priceless . staff very professional great customer etiquette. Heated private pool was amazing ( I enjoyed the fact that its deep) - I am not sure how you got the heated pool and that tree together like that but it was very special, that setup or combination put your hotel on another level (International standard)- precious experience indeed '.

Unfortunately the TV had issues - other than that I really enjoyed my stay there.

The property is located in a quiet neighborhood. It is homely and with a lovely ambience. The food too is awesome with definite excellent culinary skills.

1. The carpet in the rooms and common areas is getting abit worn out and needs to be replaced. 2. The tv in the rooms is of a cheap spec (didn’t expect that for such a high end place) and wasn’t working 90% of the time. They should seriously consider cable or satellite tv. Commercial rates are not that high.

Dinner was great. I had the Salmon. My husband had the Pork belly. Listening to live romantic piano play while dining was a bonus. Breakfast was delicious. Lovely view on the garden. Staff (service) were super helpful and friendly. Room were spacious with big bathroom. Management provided a festive bottle of bubbles and 2 glasses in our room for our anniversary. Thank you for that! :)

Pretty much nothing

We loved the design of this hotel. It was like Ethan Allen had had a hand in decorating the public spaces - it was so perfectly boho British Colonial. We loved the cozy bar and the lush plantings on the grounds of the hotel. Also loved the breezeway with the coy pond on the way to the bar and restaurant. Our room was very comfortable. The staff was laid back while still being professional. We have stayed in many places in South Africa that were super-duper deluxe. We liked that The Residence felt more homey and comfortable without being over the top.

We have stayed here a few times now and the staff are always lovely. The upgrades to the hotel are nice and are definitely an improvement. Pool villa is our favourite room. Breakfast is also nice.

The menu could do with an upgrade, its been the same for years. The food comes out a little cold. The heated private pool in the villa wasnt heated couldnt get it working during our stay.

Loved the service and great staff. Adore the Penthouse with its privacy, space and ambience . Perfect for a romantic getaway or to celebrate a romantic occasion. Fireplace was excellent. Breakfast was excellent.

Only concern is that the steps from outdoor area to bedroom should be clearly marked with tape as it is easy to miss the step. My kinglip at dinner was very overcooked and had to be sent back, but previous experience with the food exceeded my expectations.

I was absolutely blown away by The Residence. Each area is tastefully and elegantly decorated, the facilities are spotless and well thought out, and it truly felt like I was in another world. A peaceful and memorable experience - in all my travels I don't believe I have experienced a room as spectacular as the Penthouse at The Residence.

The hotel was amazing. Way beyond our expectation. We were greated with a glass of bubbles as we checked in. When we were lead to our room we thought it was another guest lounge, then realised it was part of our private garden suite. Absolutely the best place we have stayed - didn't really want to leave the room and miss enjoying it all. The double outside shower was fabulous, a was the outside jacuzzi in our other garden. Having a walk in wardrobe to hide all of our stuff was perfect, and we loved the extra little touches like the sweets left when the beds were turned down and a card left with the weather forecast for the following day. Breakfast was what dreams are made off - loved the alcove of treats to help yourself to, especially the sweets, and all of this in addition to a cooked breakfast enjoyed beside an open fire. Dinner was the same, just a great choice, out of this world quality and a cozy intimate feeling on a rainy Johannesburg day where guests started chatting to each other while they ate on their separate tables. We also enjoyed the piano bar, with the pianist taking requestions (thank you for the Moonlight Sonata), and a great choice of wine. Loved that each wine came with a food pairing suggestion. The bar even had a display of spectacles for guests to use if needed - what a lovely touch. Would 100% return to The Residence next time we are in Johannesburg.

My only niggle was that I booked a manicure. It took nearly 2 hours, with a lovely lady, but the end result wasn't brilliant and even though it was a gel manicure, it started to chip within days.

Great staff. Wonderful rooms and nice garden. The outside areas for most rooms are excellent and private. The flexibility of the staff and management remains outstanding. We have stayed every other year since this wonderful hotel opened. It remains one of our favourite in the world; and holds its own with other world-class boutique hotels (e.g. Hotel Laufaurie-Peyraguey by Lalique that is ranked in the Top 15 in the world). It is exceptional value for money. The bed was easily the most comfortable that we had in 2 weeks in South Africa.

The only minor quibble is the unpredictable transit time to JNB airport. It is tricky, but with rain and load-sharing it is difficult to predict accurately how long a transfer will take and JNB airport parking remains a hassle for all concerned. Nothing the hotel can do about this but you will need between 45 minutes and 1 hour to travel between JNB and The Residence. At some times the journey can take a lot longer.

We had a lovely spacious room with a large terrace and jacuzzi. The hotel is beautifully furnished, the outside spaces are very attractive and the food is excellent. My wife enjoyed the spa treatments and facilities. The staff are brilliant. We booked the hotel airport transfer, well worth the outlay.
