This is the place I always stay when in Launceston. It is conveniently located--only a block up from the city centre, with its eateries, shops and the Princess Theatre. The Balmoral on York offers free off-street parking. My room--as usual--was quiet, very clean, well-designed and -furnished (with a two-seater sofa, good lighting, a table and chairs, quiet, a fridge and even a footrest). WiFi and TV were good. The hot water was instant, the shower excellent and the bed comfy. Oh, and the window could be opened!

Of the only two negatives, the first was just that the loo [toilet] paper was thin. The second I see as a fad everywhere nowadays: The bedding consisted of but a bottom sheet, a top sheet and a thick, covered doona [eiderdown]. Sheets alone are fine for a summer night and a doona is welcome in winter...but what about all the months between the extremes? All night one starts with the doona up, then tosses it off, then drags it back on.... A couple of cotton blankets instead would be most welcome--if laughably old-fashioned.

The accommodation is great! It's clean and hygienic. The FREE breakfast is basic but good, with yogurt and lots of fruit, along with packaged jam, butter, and peanut butter. Coffee and tea . That’s it. The rooms are clean and spacious. The most important thing is that parking is free, and you can even leave your car parked after check-out. The hotel is situated on a hill, so be ready for some uphill climbs, drive in low gear. Keep in mind that parking is paid everywhere. The best thing about this hotel is that it's within walking distance of all the attractions. The city is like an open-air storybook, with beautiful historic buildings from the 18th to the 19th century in Victorian style. The Cataract Gorge is also nearby, a 37-minute walk away. Just be prepared for a steep incline, so consider driving or taking a bus. But remember, if you drive, you'll have to pay for parking. Overall, it's worth visiting the 2 Victoria museums, dining spots like Nepalese and Sri Lankan were my favorites.

+ Large rooms + Free parking (with overflow space out back) + CCTV + My booking came with continental breakfast which was great value (pay extra for hot food or barista coffee). Continental breakfast had some fruits (canned and fresh), yoghuts, 2/3 cereal/muselis with milk and toast with 2/3 different spreads. All you need really for a basic breakfast to get you going!! + Comfortable with all the basic amenities like iron/hairdryer,kettle,fridge

- Staff completely no response from emails like what? Really BAD I should rate them down for this but didn't (you can see how they also never seem to respond to reviews either). Night staff was a bit more helpful no issues there - Can get noisy but I think it's just the city being so quiet that loud noises carry. I could hear cars screeching around the neighbourhood in the distance for a large part of the night. I think this would be similar in a lot of accomodation though (but this is an older building with a little less soundproofing - The rooms are dated so it doesn't feel as clean, bit of dust under and around the bed as well as the sofa - At $180ish each night there were better options in town offering just as much if not more

Great hotel close to the city centre of Launceston with complimentary onsite parking. We were warmly welcomed by Tim (the owner) who was more than happy to provide some info on what to see and do during our visit. Our room was spacious, clean, quiet and had all the amenities we needed for a relaxing stay. Especially loved the super comfortable bed and the quality towels. We had a continental breakfast included and were quite impressed with what was available (fresh fruit, juice, cereal, yoghurt, fruit loaf, toast, coffee, tea) - it was a nice way to start the day. The hotel is undergoing some renovation at the moment (which we noted), but it actually didn’t affect our stay at all (minimal noise and we were out exploring most of the day). Location is excellent. Easy walking distance to the centre and (for those that like to walk a little further) only a couple of kms to the start of the Cataract Gorge. Overall a great experience and we’d definitely recommend if you’re staying in Launceston.

The continental breakfast was very nice, I enjoyed the fresh-cut fruit and the staff were lovely and helpful. My room was spotless, props to the cleaning staff for their efforts! The location on York Street was advantageous for exploring the city on foot.

I had a room that faced the street. While this afforded me lovely city views, York Street is on a hill and happens to be a fairly busy road, meaning I was getting easily woken up by traffic noise in the middle of the night. Pack your earplugs or request a room facing the other way if you book directly.

We enjoyed this charming, comfortable accommodation. Our 3rd floor room was quite spacious and had a great view of the surrounding streets and CBD. The included continental breakfast is an absolute winner, held in a cute room next to Reception. Access to netflix and kayo was a nice surprise especially for my AFL-mad partner who got to see his beloved North Melbourne Roos nearly beat Collingwood. Free parking and very close to the main part of town. The owner is nice and chatty and at the time we stayed there renovations were being done on the 4th floor which should give extra options. If we return to Launceston we would definitely stay here again.

There was nothing we didn't like. Things to note -the surrounding streets are very very hilly which didn't worry us in our Rav 4 hire car but would possibly be difficult if you don't have a car or have a car with a tiny engine. My manual Toyota Yaris would not have liked it.

The room was a large enough and very comfortable. The staff on reception were friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable about local attractions especially restaurants. The cleaning staff were also very friendly ,hard-working, and very thorough in performing their duties. The Continental breakfast provided was of a high standard offering a variety of fresh fruits including,Grapes Strawberries, Kiwi fruit and Currants as well as tinned Peaches and Pears.Fresh Yoghurt, Muesli and Cornflakes and Raisins rounded off with the provision of a variety of breads to toast and percolated Coffee. Cooked Breakfasts were also available as an upgrade.

I honestly couldn't think of something I didn't like but a room with street view out towards the South East showing parts of the beautiful city architecture would have been a bonus.

Older, cement block construction but clean and well- maintained. Easy walk to just about everything but the short hike up the hill from the city can test the legs after a long day of walking. Continental breakfast was very nice- 9 fruits, 4 juices, cereals, yogurt, several varieties of toast, good coffee, and perfectly prepared hard boiled eggs. Comfy beds, great shower pressure. Friendly staff. Would stay here again.

The late night noise from kids drag racing around a city loop is loud from a block away. But I suspect most CBD hotels have to deal with this.

Staff were very helpful and made us feel most welcome. Room was older but a great size.

A few more options for the continental breakfast would be appreciated.

Location, location… Great views of the city. Breakfast is included. We (a couple) stayed at Balmoral on York for one night on 3 Dec 2024. Location is excellent - close t City (can walk). Parking was off-street and safe. The reception was welcoming, informative, helpful - Thank you. The room was really good, fantastic view over the city. Breakfast the next morning was included. We walked to the Mall, and to Du Canes Brewery. We visited a few places in Launceston, and did the Tamar River Cruise (drove there). The stay was enjoyable - Thank you again :) Yes, Balmoral on York is recommended.

All good !!
