Perfect location, spacious room, we didn't use the onsen though. The staff were extremely helpful and saved us $500: Day 1: we leave for Nagano and later realize that we left $500 cash in a safe. Coming back was not an option due to the lack of trains. We asked in the next hotel to call Onn and ask what we can do. Day 2: we leave for Tokyo, meanwhile our cash is sent via Japan's post to our hotel in Tokyo. Day 3: the postman delivers our cash in the evening. Day 4: we leave the country in the morning. I have no idea how and whom exactly to thank, apart from leaving this review. They didn't even use any of our cash to pay for the postal fees... We are extremely grateful to the staff and will definitely stay here if we come to Nakatsugawa again!

We stayed 2 nights, very comfortable hotel, complimentary toiletries, tea and coffee. Close to the station and perfect quiet town to stay in to explore the Nakasendo Way. Bus station is at the Train Station and took bus to Magome. Walked to Tsumago and then onto Nagiso where we got the train back. Perfect day out hiking the mountains can’t recommend enough. Just watch the early closing for dinner in Japan out of season. You need to have an early dinner! The town also has its own Post Town Edo historic roads which are very nice to walk around.

Very comfortable and cozy place. You need to take your shoes off at the entrance of the hotel, which I liked, but keep it in mind if that bothers you for any reason. You can also wear your provided yukata around the hotel, so it was a comfortable atmosphere with the other guests. We also liked the free coffee provided in the lobby. There is a laundry machine available to use and a vending machine. It is easy to walk here from the train station. (5-10 min, I think) You can take a bus from the train station to Magome easily, but remember to bring cash, because the bus does not have an IC card reader (as of November 2023).

There are not many restaurants near the hotel, and even the closest convenience store is about a 5 minute walk away. There are not that many people in town and some of the roads are dark, so if I was traveling alone I might feel a little uncomfortable walking to get food at night. It’s not a problem with the hotel, but just keep that in mind and plan accordingly depending on your circumstances.

The hotel is one of the nicest hotels in Nakatsugawa within walking distance to the station and numerous restaurants. We stayed one night and enjoyed the onsen and Japanese buffet breakfast. The bedroom was clean and spacious with a lovely shower. 5mins walk from the hotel to the bus stop for Magome, we also stored our luggage at the train station for collection after the hike. Definitely recommend this hotel for the Nakasendo trail.

Onn Nakatsugawa is a beautiful and modern boutique hotel located close to the train station, in a very centric but quiet area of Nakatsugawa, full of cafes and restaurants. It’s also on the old Nakasendo and you can visit a few of the historic buildings of the town. The hotel is very nice (as the staff), has public baths, free coffee throughout the day and rice in the evening, plus amenities such as toothbrush, razor, yukata, etc. You have to take off your shoes which is a nice detail. We had the Comfort Twin room with shower and it was decently spacious.

There’s Muzak music in the hallways of the floors that can be heard from the room which is a bit annoying, especially if you want to sleep late or are jet lagged (although the music starts as early as 8 am). Also our room’s window had a curtain that did not completely block the light, which again was a bit annoying if you wanted to sleep in complete darkness during the day (not our case)

The design of the hotel is simple yet sufficient, in fact very comfortable. Things are compact, and designed in a way that brings comfort n enjoyment! no frills - i like the rules to take off our shoes at entrance n deposit them at the locker. it keeps the compound v clean. The rooms are compact, a little small but has space for us to lay out our luggage n find our stuff. nice thot to keep the sink in room instead of toilet, easier to access if u r not in the bathroom.

I do wish the check in time can be adjusted to earlier instead of 4pm which is a little late. Coming from Tokyo from overnight flight, we are tired n wish we can lie down for a bit - but had to wait till 4pm. I appreciate the staff who offered to move the clock to 3pm.

This is a lovely hotel which is much nicer than it appears from the hotel website or the slightly misleading Booking.Com description. Booking.Com describes it as a "business hotel" but it's a hotel with a private onsen that was frequented by couple, families and walkers on the Nakasendo/Kiso road. Booking.com also confusingly describes the room type as "double room with private shower"(no mention of wc) but with a "public bath" which made me wonder whether the toilet facilities were shared rather than en-suite. In fact, there is a nice en-suite toilet and shower room with sink opposite and the "public bath" is the onsen on the ground floor so it should really be described as "en-suite bathroom with access to spa/onsen facilities". The room also has a sliding door to isolate the bedroom from the hallway and door to the corridor so noise from outside the room is well-insulated. The Nakasendo highway runs right in front of the hotel so it is a great starting point for the walk to Magome (pretty walk - about 2.5 hours at a gentle pace). We received an email from the hotel after booking saying that the hotel staff did not speak English so any queries were to be forwarded by email. In fact, the reception staff greeted us in English and the check-in procedure was conducted in good English as was the reception at breakfast, so I suspect the hotel company was trying to protect them from being badgered with complicated questions about luggage forwarding by walkers. The breakfast was very good, the decor was modern and fresh and the staff were lovely.

Nothing. The hotel was great.

A modern and stylishly appointed hotel. Everything was tasteful with a chic ambiance. The room was comfortable but of typical Japanese proportions. We did not have the breakfast, which cost a very reasonable JPY1,300, but it looked good. The hotel's location, whilst not adjacent to the station and bus terminal, is an easy 8 minute walk, even with suitcases. The Hotel's onsen was hot and excellent. There are many restaurants, some cafes and a huge supermarket within easy walking distance of the hotel. The hotel is definitely a 10!

A personal and picky comment... I love the modern stylishness of the hotel but I thought the public spaces could do with some plants (greenery) and perhaps some artwork.

Well priced. An easy, slightly uphill walk from the train station. Excellent and attractive street location. Everything we wanted was close by- supermarket, restaurants, authentic Japanese streets, sake shops etc. The staff were very friendly. I read some reviews saying the staff didn’t speak enough English…this is Japan people, use Google translate and enjoy the Japanese experience! Our request to have our rooms together was met and taking our shoes off in the foyer was not an issue. We would love to come back to stay again one day! Thank you 😊

Rooms were on the small side but we were only staying two nights so it wasn’t an issue.

I only stayed here to do the Nakasendo trail but didn’t expect to enjoy both this hotel and Nakatsugawa so much. It’s a much more quiet town but it has its own charm. There was music playing all throughout the streets and pots of flowers on every corner. The hotel was very modern, clean and convenient. I got to have my first onsen experience there. Was a great way to wind down at the end of a day of hiking. The staff were friendly and could speak enough English for me to get by. The best part was the breakfast buffet. It was a hot Japanese style breakfast, mostly cooked fresh. So delicious

The bed was a bit hard for my liking but I noticed that was common in Japan. You do get use to it. Also the pillow has some small beads built into one side. It must be a Japanese thing. It would be good to have an option of a pillow without this.
