Very warm welcome at the arrival, they took the baggage to the room and offered tea while completely bureoucracy. Room in perfect Japanise traditional style, lots of amenities in ther (thoothbrush, shower caps, slippers, towel, yukata -also for children) Onsen open for 17 hours per day, great Japanese experience. Breakfast and Dinner in perfect Japanese style, unique chance to eat great Japanese food (be prepared for lots of food and some of them really exotic for a western person). Ryokan personnel extremely kind and available.

Actually everything was really good, the only point is that the bathroom fixutures are a bit dated (even if perfectly functioning)

Amazing Ryokan that's over 200 years old. Staff and service was amazing. We stayed in a traditional Japanese room and cannot fault anything. They even accommodate my small toddler with meals and other items. The food were delicious and the onsen was amazing. The garden is just beautiful and serene.

There's only 1 bus that take you there from Kanazawa station and back and it has limited time table. If you miss the bus, you're only other option is taxi.

Everything was amazing. The staff were incredibly friendly, the property was beautiful and the food they made was just unreal. It was so cool to have this experience. We went to town for a day but the entire time we were just thinking about being back at the ryoakan so we came back early and just relaxed in the room. The onsen was also amazing.

Nothing specific about the property itself but if you want to go into town, you have to get a car or take the bus at 9:19 am. Only one bus. And then to come back the bus is at 4 pm. You can also just take a car it came out to about 4,500

This ryokan was great. It was traditional, cozy, and clean. It’s an easy taxi ride from Kanazawa and in a peaceful location. Everyone at the property is so welcoming and helpful. The service was great. The food is a very traditional Japanese dinner. I don’t eat a lot of fish but I just tried everything to get the experience and still had enough to eat. I always bring a snack for the room as backup. We didn’t use the baths so we can’t speak on those.

The beds were a pad on a wood base. Our family doubled their pads using extra pads in the closet of the room and this made it more comfortable!

Staying here felt like stepping back in time—at least 200 years! From the moment you step off the bus, the attentive staff pampers you, setting the tone for an unforgettable experience. The beauty of the property is astounding, both in the common areas and the rooms. The meal served was exceptional, and the onsen experience was absolutely unforgettable (I was fortunate enough to have it all to myself at 10 PM). Stopping here before heading into the bustling, overwhelming energy of Tokyo was the best decision ever!

Some additional charges were unclear when I booked, and I was a bit puzzled when presented with the extra bill at the end of my stay. I’d recommend paying close attention when reserving your room to avoid any surprises. :)

The food was absolutely incredible. Some of the best food we had in Japan. The dining experience in general was so unique and intimate. The staff were wonderful - so helpful and kind. The onsen was a relaxing, atmospheric, beautiful experience. The whole stay far exceeded my expectations. Our room was so cosy and comfortable, overlooking the stunning garden. This was by far the best place we stayed in Japan. Well worth the visit.

I loved every single second spent at Motoyu Ishiya. I would definitely recommend to friends and family and hopefully I can come back one day.

Some facilities could be updated like sinks and the electric kettle, they are good enough but a bit dated. Would be nice to have more time to explain meals and how to eat them or

Our best stay in Japan was here. The staff is incredibly friendly, passionate about good treatment and very helpful. The facilities are perfectly maintained, with an onsen that makes you connect with nature. They include breakfast and dinner, respecting privacy and with excellent views. From the moment we arrived until we left the experience was more than good, excellent. Highly recommended if you want to live a traditional Japanese experience.

A little bit far from Kanazawa city centre, but it’s necessary to connect with nature. No restaurants around there.

Motoyu Ishiya is a place to relax and is the true essence of what a ryokan is. I enjoyed the location, the facilities and the accommodating staff during our stay. I am not a fan of sashimi and they kindly provided substitutions/cooked options which was really fantastic. However important to ask as the likelihood of facilitating other dietary requirements may be low. Meals supplied were fantastic, keeping to Japanese style breakfast and dinner that will test the palate at times and you never have to worry about not being full as it is a 9-10 course meal. The onsen is fantastic, with a sizeable bathing area and a massage chair outside, you can relax once more. Honestly an experience of a lifetime and a must if you want to experience true Japanese ryokan!

Unfortunately, there is only one bus that arrives/leaves at the ryokan per day into kanazawa city, so you may have to come back to the ryokan via taxi. However, this is not the owners fault, this is just for those who are venturing to and from the ryokan into kanazawa city. You may consider leaving the ryokan stay at the end of the journey to make the most of the serenity.

This is a traditional guest house with Onsen (hot spring spa) and traditional dinner/breakfast included. Pricey but definitely worth the experience especially if you're in Japan for the first time. Both dinner and breakfast were excellent and served in a nicely setup dining room with garden view. We had to leave early in the morning because of a pre-booked tour so they served a breakfast for us half an hour earlier than their earliest scheduled time. I guess at least 2 or 3 of their stuff had to start their shift early for that. Definitely recommend this place.
