The pension is very beautiful and well maintained, cozy and comfortable! During my stay, I didn’t see other customers so it was very quiet all the time, I believe people who enjoys me-time will definitely love this place! The owner is a very friendly person! Though my Japanese is still very bad but he is always helpful! He can speak pretty good English, but I insisted to try my Japanese! So he is still very patient and calm! I didn’t make any reservations for dinner in my first night, but I was riding motorcycle the whole so I would rather stay in the pension and not going out to look for dinner! He was super nice to serve me a simple meal with warmth! There was homemade ice cream for the dessert! The owner is a good chef and all the ingredients he used for the meals were sourced from Furano! I am grateful I can taste that furano favored in the meals! Yes, I had breakfast and dinner again on the second day!
The room I was staying is a room at second floor without toilet and bathroom, it is not a big issue during normal hours, but when it is late night, one might fear making noises walking two stairs down to toilet or bathroom! Otherwise, everything is near perfect!

Lovely little pension (very photogenic!) in a lovely little spot. What you've got to know about Furano is that there are two areas: the main bit with the JR station, bars & restaurants and the skiing area with the pensions, slightly more isolated restaurants and the après ski stuff. Pension Gooseberry is in the latter area, in fact a little outside it. You will need a car or motorbike to get yourself around but, on a quiet road outside of town, this may well be the nicest place to stay. Yes, it's a "shared bathroom" type of place - there's a lot of that over here - but it is nicely appointed and the staff are lovely and vert accommodating. Great breakfast full of local produce. The coffee and scones just kept on coming. They sorted a covered area for us to park the motorbike and were full of useful information. We left promising to return.
The room itself was a bit threadbare. Two beds and a cupboard. That's it. No bedside tables, no bedside lighting. Not much at all. The air-conditioning worked though, thank God. It was no deal breaker but the room itself wasn't very exciting.

It’s not far from the some famous sightseeing places in Furano or Biei. The owner was really friendly and capable and introduced us about good place to go. We ordered the breakfast for 2 days and they were extremely good. We especially loved their homemade scones! We chose to stay in the room with the ladder and my 12 years old daughter really enjoyed the place. Cleaned and quite comfortable.
Nothing special but we took a time to find this place by using Google map at first time. So it’s better to note the detailed route or direction how the guest get there.

For those nervous about the shared bathrooms: we never had to wait to use the shared toilets (two for men, two for women), or the shared Japanese style bath, which is kept quite hot and perfect after a day of snowboarding. In fact, we preferred a spacious, common bath to a small private bathtub/shower. I also recommend opting for breakfast, it's very good, and at the end, the host brings you a pot of fresh herbal tea. There's also a shared ski storage room, which is very useful.
The room doesn't have much free floor space, but we only bought a smaller bag each so it was ok. Our room also had a loft area, which could be used as a third sleeping spot, or an area to lay out larger luggage.

The owners were very friendly and nice. They gave us corn (which was very sweet!) while we were chilling in the common room at night. The common room had snacks and water for free and was very comfy. We also enjoyed the public Japanese-style family bathroom, with a hot bath to soak in after bathing. Pillows and bed were comfy and we had a good night's rest (:
Take note that the bunk bed ladder for the 3 ppl room is really high and can be scary for some people to climb up. The location was also slightly further from the town area, around 15 min drive but near Ningle Terrace (which doesn't have much tbh)

Lobby is nice, good view
Owner is nice, but he can't speak English, cause some misunderstand. I arrive early before check in time, and need to use restroom at lobby, he didn't allow us for using because it is not check in time. So I felt a bit disappointed. Overall he is very nice. I understand him, it is the policy.

The host Jun treated us extremely well, was unbelievable helpful and considerate. Breakfast was always something to look forward to and he offered to cook an evening meal on request. The place is very peaceful, but without a vehicle you need to walk 20 minutes to the ski resort, where ski lockers are available.

Lovely heartwarming place to stay. We were there with a heavy snow. Mr.Jun the owner has been eager to help with everything. He gave us some ice cream to enjoy spending time in the common area before bed. And prepared lovely breakfast for us in the next morning. Everything was homemade and so yummy. The location might be good for those with own cars.

It’s full of characters. The owner is super nice and friendly!
The wall is too thin. I was waken up by the alarm from next door at 04:00 in the morning.

Lovely breakfast with delicious freshly baked scones and green salad picked from the owner’s vegetable patch. The breakfast room was large, airy and restful
The rooms and bathrooms are honestly a little spartan. But they are scrupulously clean. The bath towels supplied are really too small
