A truly rare find, this guesthouse is absolutely steeped in charm and rustic beauty. I couldn't believe I was still in the heart of Tokyo. Everything was immaculately clean and the staff were wonderfully attentive and helpful. I arrived a bit too early for check-in and they kindly looked after my heavy suitcase so that I could explore the area unencumbered. When the bar opens up, both the staff and the regular locals come to relax and chat together, it's a very warm and welcoming space to wind down at the end of the day. There are a a couple of bakeries close by where you can grab some delicious breakfast. I recommend walking in the direction of Ueno park to enjoy your pastries under the trees and grab a coffee from the Starbucks (most cafes don't seem to open until 10 or 11, so chain coffee places are your best bet for an early caffeine boost that isn't from a vending machine. Of course the guesthouse has a fully equipped kitchen you can use as well. I highly recommend this spot for your Tokyo travels. 2 minutes walk from iriya station, a relatively quiet and calm local area, and speaking as a solo female traveller, a very safe environment. Thank you Toco Guesthouse! I will be visiting again some day.

I totally appreciate that the building is old, and so it is likely to rattle in the wind. That being said, if there is anything that can be done to reduce the rattling noise of the windows in the girls dorm, I'm sure it would be greatly appreciated by the sleepy guests.

Guesthouse Toco was fabulous, I would absolutely stay again. I stayed two nights in the female-only dorm, which contained six beds arranged as bunkbeds with curtains you can pull around them for privacy. Each bed has a plug with a regular outlet (Japanese-style, which is the same two prongs as many US outlets, although if you have a three-prong, grounded plug, you would need an adapter) and two USB outlets, and a small desk-style lamp, which was very convenient. The bed linens are included in the price and you can borrow towels and do laundry for a fee. One drink per night at the small bar is also included, and I tried the plum liquor which was very nice. The staff were all pleasant and helpful and there were no significant language barriers despite lack of Japanese language proficiency. The female-only dorm has air conditioning from a minisplit, as well as a fan to help circulate the air, which was perfect because it was hot outside. The showers were clean and not cramped and slippers are provided since you are expected to leave your outdoor shoes at the entrance to the sleeping areas. The toilets are the fancy Toto ones with built-in bidets, which, to an American, is luxurious. The location is convenient, a 13 minute walk from the JR Yamanote line, Uguisudani Station, and is in a quiet neighborhood. A nice 30 minute walk to the Senso-ji temple goes by plenty of bakeries and restaurants and I specifically enjoyed Banninriki, 5 minutes away, which specializes in a "dry ramen" style called Aburasoba. The garden is beautiful and you can sit and enjoy but use the bug spray they have, because there are mosquitoes!

If you are tall and a slow learner like me, you will probably smack your head into the top of the door frames repeatedly, but that is the price you pay to enjoy the traditional architecture style!

This is a quaint property in a relatively quiet neighbourhood in Tokyo. It is a traditional Japanese style home that has been remodelled into a hostel style. The staff are excellent and welcoming. The bar is a nice place to relax and meet other guests. The bedroom is generally pretty comfortable and has privacy curtains, vital for this sort of accommodation. The location is a bit far away from some of the main attractions and neighbourhoods (Shinjuku, Shibuya etc) but has good enough access to the subway system. In the end, the value for money is exceptional for Tokyo, so if budget is a consideration, this is an excellent option.

Minor quibble, but if you have a top bunk there are gaps around the side of the bed where you possessions can easily fall down onto the lower bunk.

Again amazing experience, after I book a queen ,stayed another in the dorm room ,very quiet and respectful everyone ,I left my precious scarf under bed (be careful easy to slipper under bed ), I was in a hurry to airport and felt so bad with my attitude talking to the staff with broken English ,sorry for all misunderstanding and apologize for the way I talked )they found it and kept for me . I will definitely book again next time I visit Tokyo ,for those lovely girls and cozy stay . This is the meaning of traveling I cherish. Millions thanks ,well done girls I ma proud of u and very thankful for keeping my marriage anniversary scarf .

Stepping into Guesthouse toco felt like walking into a space untouched by time. It was so serene, so cosy, in a part of Japan that met the right balance of local and touristy. Lovely hospitality, and they had everything you need for a comfortable stay - kitchenware, clean bathrooms and cosy beds. They provide towels and bedsheets too :-) I had the most moving conversations over the dinner table with travellers from around the world. Guesthouse toco is the kind of place to attract that crowd - open and warm explorers with stories to trade over konbini dinner and green tea.

Nothing not to like, more of a reminder that it is still a hostel, so the usual hostel drawbacks apply. The wooden floors are very sensitive, so any luggage rolling will be heard. Bring earplugs and a sleeping mask if you need it, as well as a lock for your personal locker!

The location is good as it is walkable from the station, and it's great to experience a glimpse of the traditional architecture in a quaint and quiet neighbourhood. Check-in and check-out was easy to arrange with the hosts. It's my first time in a mixed backpacker's dorm, but everyone was respectful of each other. Overall the place is kept very clean!

It's hard to come back late though, as we can't help making noise when opening the luggage to take our clothes to shower, so apologies to causing any noise disturbances, since we are sharing the space with strangers who seem to go to bed early.

Supreme location right on a train line and easily walkable to amazing restaurants, but still tucked away in a quiet corner where you could get some peace. Super comfortable, friendly and helpful staff, absolutely gorgeous property and gardens I took so many photos. Comfortable room and had a lovely little balcony and lots of space. Couldn't have asked for more.

Genuinely no complaints that I can think of. Tiny nitpick of there was only one pillow but that's standard in Japan, and it was leagues more comfortable than I've had in chain hotels. Absolutely zero complaints about the staff, the room, or the place in general.

It is located in a quiet neighbourhood, the house is a traditional one and very cozy, the staff very helpful. Good price. There's a daily free welcome drink in the bar of the hostel.

Closest JR station is 10 min walking JR Uguisudani although there's a close subway station Iriya. The shared rooms felt not very spacious, and out of 8 beds only 2, are big ones since they have extra space next to the wall, the ones who are above are a bit uncomfortable. Expected more from the bar, only users of guesthouse came from time to time to have a drink and chat

I really liked the actual Hostel, everything was clean and the staff was very nice! Ueno Station was close by, so Airport Transfer was not an issue! I also really liked the ambience of the Hostel, it being an old house in a modernized but still traditional style!

One little downside was the Fire Station right next door, which was a bit loud at times and also the windows which rattled because of air flow. But the hostel being an old house it was somewhat expected, so it wasn't too big of an issue

Staff was very helpful and kind, hostel looks wonderful and is kept clean, it's pretty cozy. My bed was comfortable and there was plenty of space next to my bed to put my things.

Wifi isn't that great (especially in the bed I was in), toilets are basically in the same area as the kitchen which is not the best. It can get a bit cold in the morning or night since it's an old building but they do have heating on in the main areas.
