Favourite hostel I've stayed in a month of travelling japan. Absolutely beautiful location, near the dam so I was able to catch the sunrise easily and some cool night shots (check out the stars at night). Not far from the main street and some good onsens e.g. Sekizenkan Kashoutei which inspired Spirited Away, about 20-30mins walk to nearest ATM at a post office though so make sure you have enough cash. Quiet when I was there, only one other person in my dorm. I liked that in the 'dorm' you basically got a mini room instead of a capsule, seperated by a curtain and wall with no ceiling. Plenty of space. But the privacy was nice, bed was comfy, lockers provided. Kitchen was good and there were vending machines on site, could also buy snacks and souvenirs from reception which helped as nearby shops and restaurants have changeable hours. Staff were super friendly with pretty good English although sometimes hard to find. Onsen was beautiful and often had it all to myself, outdoors onsen under maple leaves was super nice. Could hire private sauna at the top too which was cool, has a cold bath as well and toilet/shower. Wish I could have stayed longer!
Stink bugs were annoying and would come into your room if you had the light on. They do provide duct tape to catch them though.

Wonderful newly renovated hotel in Shima Onsen - nice calm and relaxing area and surroundings. Our room was facing the mountain slope with all of its greenery and we had a lovely night. The best was definitely the Onsen of the hotel. The Rotenburo had an outdoor view on some maple leaves tree and other plants and it was just too relaxing. Stayed there for nearly 2 hours and afterwards fell into the comfortable bed. There is also a really comfortable Forest Room to read a book or get a bit cozy, there is a table tennis table and the coffee area also looked really nice
The wifi in the room was not really working, which we did not so much care about as we stayed in the Onsen and roamed around the city the whole day.

The Japanese rooms were large, the staff was friendly and the food was great. We did the included dinner and breakfast and the portions were large, especially the dinner. You definitely won't be hungry. The breakfast is traditional Japanese fare which was good, but may not be suitable for some oversee travelers. They also had a lot of books for kids and magazines to peruse in their lobby and library section. Overall, the value quotient is fantastic.
The outdoor bath was too hot for my kids and one sink didn't drain properly (fortunately there were two sinks in the bathroom). The location is so so, but what you'd expect for such a good price.

A marvelous stay!! The employees were helpful and friendly, everything was exceptionally clean. The beds are comfy, they have softer pillows if you ask. They have so many features!! Table tennis, a few board games, but best of all - a library (all Japanese) and a wonderful place to wind down and read your books: the forest room, located on the second floor!! And of course a perfect Onsen area with indoor and outdoor bath! I’ll definitely be back some time!

This place far exceeded my expectations. It is easily accessible from both bus and train. Many other attractions and restaurants in walking distance. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I ended up eating most of my meals here because the food was incredibly delicious. The onsen has two many pools, one inside and one outside. The only sauna there is available for an affordable private rental of 80 minutes. Super clean and tidy and lots of common space to either find space near people or alone. Large shared kitchen. Highly recommend staying here.

I absolutely loved staying at Shin Toji Lulud. The staff were so helpful, friendly and accommodating. From picking us up at the bus Shima Onsen bus station to organising us vegetarian options for breakfast and dinner. The facilities are incredible. Very stylish. The hotel itself is a work of art, the decor was beautiful. The spa or onsen facilities were beautiful and clean. The hotel wasn’t very busy while we were there so each time I used the onsen, I was alone. My partner too. I found the location ideal as it’s a short 12 min walk down to the Main Street with all the p and cafes and a brisk 15 minute up to the bottom of the dam. The food was delicious. The room very spacious and comfortable. We had the corner room on the second floor which was like being in the forest. The room had desks for remote working and a private bath. If I ever go to Shima again, I will definitely stay at this hotel again. Thank you Yuto and everyone. Arigato guzaimas.

It was by far the best hotel experience we ever had! The region is amazing, nostalgic and peaceful (just like the perfect rural Japan we have dreamt of). The hotel staff is highly polite, helpful and lovely. The hotel itself is brand new and well designed. The hotel restaurant was delicious. And last but not least: the hotel room. Absolutely stunning, well thought and designed. So spacious, clean, private and aesthetic. We had the room with the private onsen and we will definitely coming back!!! Really a hidden gem we will keep in our hearts.
Everything was just perfect.

Nice and relaxed place. I really liked the Onsen and the superieur terrace room that was quiet, also thanks to the respectful Japanese guests. Very kind staff especially the young lady from Sri Lanka, but all of them did their best to make my stay as pleasant as possible and I stayed for 7 nights! Very good bed and bedding and an easy walk to the charming village of Shima Onsen with numerous restaurants and cafés.

This hotel is actually amazing and far better than the other ones nearby. This is a newer hotel if not the newest hotel near Shima and well suited for tourists. There are spacious rooms, immaculate facilities, a restaurant, library, rest area, and one of the newest onsens I've experienced. The water, shower, shampoo, everything exceed expectations. The staff is incredibly friendly and extremely helpful- I felt like I was staying at a 5 star hotel!
We may have visited during a slow season, but there weren't too many other guests, and it seemed a little too quiet. However, even when we went outside to walk around to see places, eat, and pass by the other hotels, it also seemed eerily quiet.

The whole facility was very clean and spacious including the rooms. Relaxing indoor and outdoor onsen baths. Nice Japanese breakfast, however you have to book it in advance. Friendly and helpful staff.
There wasn't any communication about the breakfast option, I had to ask and then was able to reserve it for the second morning of my stay. Also the hotel is quite far from food options and the restaurant has limited hours, so it might be nice to have some vending machine food options.
