This ryokan is located on a hillside above the historic district, and our room had a beautiful view out over Takayama. The staff were friendly and helpful (most spoke English). Although we had a wooden bathtub in our room, we used the public baths and also reserved the private outdoor bath once. All of the bathing facilities were spacious and clean. We ate dinner and breakfast one time each during our stay - the coursed dinner included local ingredients like hida beef and the grilled miso at breakfast was delicious. It's a great location for people who are willing to walk up a hill to get to/from town and the hotel. There are hiking paths just a few minutes' walk further up the hill (that connect to the Higashiyama walking course), and it's a short (but steep) walk to Takayama's historic district, the morning markets, Takayama Jinya, etc.
This isn't as luxurious a ryokan as some of the others that we stayed at during our trip, but it's also a much more reasonable price point. For example, our room was on the smaller side and didn't let us spread out as much as ryokan that cost $100+ more per night. The bathroom was compartmentalized and so it felt smaller and was harder for both of us to get ready at the same time in the morning. That said, it was a perfectly nice place to stay and you do get a lot for the price. We would happily stay there again.

The room was extremely comfortable and spacious. The beds were comfy, the bathroom was clean and the whole experience of staying at a Ryokan was fantastic. The staff was friendly and spoke excellent English. The food was great too! We booked a room with half-board and it was a very interesting experience to eat a traditional Japanese breakfast (on our second day they provided more western options as the difference in culinary was difficult to us, but I was glad I got to have the experience.) The dinner was superb, I am pretty the best food I ate in Japan. We booked the private onsen which was very interesting, clean and beautiful. We didn't try the public onsen as we were uncertain of how to behave in one, so it was great to use the private one. It was only 1000 yen per couple and the staff explained how to use the space really well. It was an excellent stay, I really felt that I managed to experience a more traditional side of Japana. Also, the hotel was only a short walk from the touristic spots. It was at the end of a hill, but not difficult at all to reach. And the hotel provides a pick up service from the train station.
Nothing, everything was perfect.

We came here for the ryokan experience. We were not disappointed. For people in our 60s, the steps and stairs were the only major challenge, not to mention getting up and down off a futon on the floor! But this is part of the reason for going. The evening meal was extremely beautifully presented and also delicious. Breakfast was in the same vein. We paid 1,000 yen extra to use the private onsen, and it was worth it. We were helpfully supplied with an English set of instructions on correct etiquette for the bath. To arrange a pickup from the station uphill to the ryokan, the staff at the tourist center at the station were very helpful. It was easy to book the shuttle back down to downtown after our stay.
It wouldn't be fair to complain about stairs or futons, when they were the reason for going! If you are looking for an authentic experience, when you don't have much Japanese language and you are reasonably flexible, this is a perfect place.

A charming and dated ryokan yet affordable with an onsen. My room had a comfortable "balcony" with two chairs and a table, making the most comfortable traditional Japanese room I've stayed. The view over Takayama was great. The staff spoke sufficient English and the wifi worked fine. They serve good Japanese breakfast from 7:30 to 8:30. The Japanese dinner they offer is excellent, though somewhat expensive at 6050 yen. Private onsen for 40 minutes costs 1000 yen. Would definitely come again.
Being a traditional Japanese hotel the soundproofing is not amazing. On two mornings some noisy birds outdoors woke me up quite early.

The hotel is on a little hill with a lovely view over Takayama! The staff is very kind and helpful and the rooms are exceptionally clean! The public bath is lovely! We reserved the private bath for 1000 yen. It is outdoors and we enjoyed it a lot! The best part of our stay was the food! We booked breakfast and dinner for 2 nights and every meal was exceptional! The staff very kindly explains every unknown dish to you and it was a great experience!
The hotel has aged quite a bit. It could definitely use a fresh coat of paint all over, but everything else about this hotel is great!

The traditional room was beautiful and had everything necessary for the stay. The views from the room were majestic, being able to see the whole of Takayama. Even though it is relatively far from the station, it is still right next to the old district. And of course, great service from the people working there. Definitely would stay again.
If I was to chose something to improve, it would be the bed. I was not really expecting much from a futon, but it still was definitely harder than other ones I have slept on. Also, the room I slept on had a traditional translucent window on one of the walls, so in the morning you will absolutely get greeted by the sunlight, like it or not. It added to the beautiful aesthetics of the room, though.

This small family ryokan has been a wonderfull surprise for us. It is a very traditional and authentic ryokan with amazing view from the room and lovely Onsen. Special mention for the dinner. It was very good and with so many things to try! Kind staff: I would recomend to anyone to spend a night there.
The only thing that may be "unconfotble" is that the ryokan is located 15min from the JR Takayama station and the last part of the walk is on after a uphill road. But they have a shuttle navy service so I recomend to contact them in advice for assistance at your arrival in case should you have heavy luggages.

The personal service started as soon as we entered the door. Our suitcases had already been taken up to the room and one of the staff members showed us the room (which was more like a flat, let's be honest). The style was a traditional Japanese room, with stunning views overlooking the city from our "balconyroom". Breakfast was nice as well. They have a basic, but good onsite onsen for guests and provide kimonos for their guests. Highly recommend this place, even though it is a walk. PS. They offer free shuttle to the trainstation which is great, signup in reception.
The dinner was a bit overpriced, so we decided not to go for that. The walls aren't very well sound proofed (not a major issue, but we could hear other guests).

Excellent service from staff, from start to finish they are always willing to help and assist. The dinner and breakfast were great and very large traditional meals. It’s a convenient way to experience traditional meals without waiting in lines. And you get a yukata for dinner
It is a bit older, but this didn’t bother me since the service and dinner was great. A little bit of a walk up a hill if you want to head into town. But they offer a shuttle service to the station every 30 minutes in the morning so it’s not a major issue.

The hotel was in an amazing location, near the beautiful Shiroyama Park, where Autumn foliage was amazing! The hotel was very cute and traditional (although a bit dated). We booked a private onsen and it was great for relaxing in a cold night! Also it was a five-ten minute walk from the main old streets which was very convenient and a ten minute drive from the station! All in all was a great stay!
Nothing!
