The provided breakfast and dinners were absolutely exceptional in taste and presentation. I felt like each food item was meticulously crafted with love and attention. I have a severe nut allergy, and each meal dilliegently accommodated for that. Decor is pleasant to look at and live in and lends itself to an ambience that fits together really well. The Kouyamaki room I stayed in was great because the bed doubles as massive storage space which I reckon could fit 2 check in luggages plus carry-ons. Service is fantastic and flexible. As a solo traveller who wanted to snowboard at four different ski resorts, arrangements were made to do so that aligned with other guests plans. I also wanted to night skiing which meant I would miss out on dinner, but Shuuhei kindly prepared for me a lunch box to eat before dropping me off for night skiing (low key, the reason I'm giving a 10/10) Onsen/public bath is clean and well maintained. Most nights I was able to enjoy the bath in solitude. The family that own the inn and staff were a delight to be in the presence of. Very humble and pleasant. In my stay, there were several local families and couples celebrating the new year here, foreigners like myself, solo and group. The place was very welcoming for all. Would stay again if ever snowboarding in hakuba.

Other reviews have said the walls are thin and I'd say that's true. Not enough to keep me awake at night or delay sleep but that might have something to do with being exhausted from shredding the slopes.

Overall, this was a fantastic authentic ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) experience in the tourist-filled Hakuba area. My room was small but clean and well decorated with tatami, Japanese wood, and even a small Japanese garden. Dinner and breakfast are included. The food was made with simple but delicious ingredients. What Japanese cuisine is all about! The owner even grows his own rice which is some of the best I’ve ever had. The staff were all very friendly and welcoming. They even made me a packed lunch onigiri breakfast because I had to check out early! The older staff members don’t speak English well but the younger staff do. Communication was never an issue. The public baths were clean and well maintained. I liked the heated wooden floors. It never got busy and I was the only person bathing every night. I ski’d at Happo one and the location is not the closest. Takes about 15 minutes by car. But the hotel offers a shuttle service to and back at designated times which you arrange with the owner. I saw a review about the service and how guests have to carry their own luggage. I’ll be honest. I’m a well travelled and a pretty chill person but I thought it was strange that the staff don’t help guests carry luggage on and off the car. I slipped as I carried my heavy suitcase up the snow-piled entrance stairs and the old man just watched haha. Not sure if this is a cultural thing. But hey just a minor thing for me. Overall, I loved it and would reccomend! Kalam Tang P.s the hotel also offers ski gear rental!

The Stuff was very friendly, they even picked me up at the station and also offered a ride back to another station. The room was so comfortable, I wished, I stayed longer. The food was also amazing! I was nervous about staying in a Ryokan alone, but since there are a few rooms for only one person, I didn’t feel alone or wrong. I would also especially recommend this place, if you want to travel alone.

I can’t think of anything, that I didn’t like. For not Japanese people it’s maybe good to keep on mind, that the breakfast is a Japanese Breakfast only. But even if I prefer western breakfast, I loved this breakfast!

Overall had a very charming stay, it is a family run ryokan and the hosts will go out of their way to accommodate your concerns and make it an enjoyable experience for you. They prepare an elaborate Japanese style dinner and breakfast and have a recreation area and private onsen. The ryokan itself is a mix of traditional Japanese design with contemporary architecture, and has massive windows in the common areas so you can enjoy Hakuba's stunning view. The room was very clean and opened up into a balcony overlooking the snowy mountains. Shuhei was kind enough to not only pick us up from the train station but dropped us to the Ski slopes after we checked out and also provided seasonal vouchers for lunch. The hosts really went above and beyond and I recommend it for anyone looking to experience Hakuba's landscape, Japanese cuisine and hospitality of this warm family.

Very small issue, completely overshadowed by the lovely overall experience, the blanket was slightly small for me and my partner.

Please come prepared because you will be showered with the utmost warmth & care by this kind family made up of Shuhei, his beautiful & talented wife Tomoko, as well as Shuhei’s lovely parents. The ryokan is extremely stylish and comes with large windows everywhere; with expansive and most magical winter views of Hakuba. The room is super comfortable, and breakfast/dinner was cooked with love daily. There is a heart-wrenching story behind the loss of their home during 2014’s earthquake and my utmost respect to the grit and resilience shown by Shuhei and family to rebuild Ryokan Mokuzin from scratch. Stay here to experience the architecture, landscape, culinary and hospitality of this extraordinary family. Highly recommend. You won’t regret.
