I loved the place and the way all your staff kept it clean and tidy. All staff are so friendly and kind. Breakfast was perfect. The beds were super comfortable and clean. The aircon worked well and quietly. I would definitely return should I come back and I would recommend this to everyone. Lovely hotel/lodges and staff

Dinner is the only thing that lets them down as the service is fairly poor. I was given the napkin as I finished my meal. My drink was forgotten and the receptionist noticed and brought my drink to me. Such a shame as everything else was amazing. I did have laundry done and sadly my white were not white when they came back and it costs a fair bit to clean them. But I did get everything back so it was a good service.

The staff was very friendly and always ready to help. The room was perfect. We booked a tepee in a small hotel spot with a pool surrounded for an impressive vegetation. Close to the hotel you will find different restaurants and a small beach 200 m from the hotel (please take care, very dangerous rip currents). Public transport available to visit Manzanillo, Pints UVA , Cocles or Puerto Viejo. Tasty breakfast.

Well we observed some strange situation with one of the staff members and his behaviour with the wild animals. He was carrying a baby sloth inside the hotel facilities.

I am wondering that people book a Jungle Lodge and then complain about the Jungle noises. We really iked our stay there, in the middle of all the green. We had the newest room I think, with glass windows, air condition, safe, fridge. Nice equipment. Very good beds. The bath was nicely made, partly open to the jungle, unfortunately the shower was constructed that it floated the bath when used. The breakfast as absolutely adequate for a 3 star hotel., besides ham and cheese would be fine. There is also one room that is accessible for wheel chairs. Visit the Jaguar rescue center when there, it is just 1,5 km apart. Nice coffee and pizzeria close by, Gipsy and LA Leyenda. Supermarked approx. 800 m apart.

Nothing, besides the floated bath. 😉 They should ook into this

I wasn't sure what to expect staying here as I had seen a few mixed reviews, and I tend to be quite picky about certain details of a place (I travel a lot). But I had a wonderful stay and would love to come back (I stayed a week). From the moment I arrived, I felt relaxed, welcome and at home here. The design of the lodge is absolutely lovely, with a big soaring restaurant area built in the traditional style from bamboo and grasses, plenty of places to chill out, a pool and beautiful jungle with the most incredible 70ft tree I've ever seen. I stayed in the "little cabin" - the cheapest room, perfect for two friends or a single person - which is right by the main complex. I was not disturbed by any noise -- other than the amazing natural sounds of the jungle which is weird and wonderful to fall asleep and wake up to. Some friends of mine were staying next door in the (more expensive) La Kukula and let me tell you, if you're considering both, this is by far the nicer option! Here at Shawahanda, the cabins have more privacy and are just cuter, and the common areas are way nicer in terms of design and ambience. The reception staff were a total delight, so welcoming and helpful. I thought breakfast was totally fine, I loved having fresh fruit every morning followed by pancakes and scrambled eggs. Perfect and healthy and not over-the-top or wasteful. A deeply relaxing place that's not fancy but is very cute and comfortable -- and has been around a long time, known and loved by Puerto Viejo locals. Thank you!

Being in the jungle, they do have a problem with flies at breakfast, but I'm not sure what can be done about this. I do wish they would find a different way to tidy the area without using a leaf blower - it was sometimes noisy during the day and filled the air with the smell of petrol, disturbing the wildlife and the guests. It wasn't befitting of an eco-lodge and I'd love to see the garderners use a different method to clean up leaves. Prepare for the humidity - again a natural part of being in the jungle, and sleeping in cabins that are built in costa rican style with just screens for windows. You just have to get used to everything being slightly damp. I was prepared so I didn't mind, but good to know going in! It's the same everywhere in this part of the world.

The jungle setting is fabulous and just a short hop across the road to the beach. The star of the place by a long way is Gabi on reception who was outstanding in her service and friendliness. She was often rushed off her feet and I think her team mates could help her more.

There were too many team members who didn’t seem to care or smile and many team members on their phones. In particular in the evening the restaurant service was miserable.

The bathroom was the star, maybe the best bathroom il ever have, open to the jungle. The rooms were very nice, stylish and comfortable. The grounds were also very nice as were the people who kept them, it was also exciting looking for wildlife.

The breakfast wasn’t good. We were advised about the flies but just saying they would be all over the food is one thing, letting it happen and making half the food unable is another. My thoughts are they serve breakfast to the rooms until this is sorted, give a checklist the night before, it would also produce less waste.

It truly feels like we're living in the jungle, the pool and the villa are beautiful, even better than in the pictures. As we pulled into the parking lot, we were greeted by the howling of monkeys and a sloth hanging above us in a tree. If someone wants to be directly in nature but still in comfort, then this is an excellent place.

Unfortunately, the breakfast is quite bad, but that doesn't detract from the overall quality of the place.

Shawandha Review I will start by saying that I travel a lot, both for work and leisure, but I very rarely take the time to write reviews. That said, I feel the need to review the Shawandha Lodge both to give them accolades for our wonderful stay there and to provide another viewpoint for those who may be considering a stay but are questioning it after reading a couple of recent reviews that were absolutely scathing—which frankly, my family and I just can’t comprehend. We arrived at Shawandha very late at night after a long day of flying and a very long shuttle from San Jose. Upon our arrival, we were given a warm welcome and a cold drink from the bar. Genesis made us feel totally welcome, walked us to our cabin and showed us around. It was absolutely beautiful…. But it’s important to remember that it is in the RAINFOREST. There is no AC or TV, which was clearly stated everywhere we did research for the trip. There are huge (and beautiful) golden orb spiders in their webs in rafters along pathways. The howler monkeys WILL wake you up at 4am. The sounds of the jungle are everywhere, and the animal sitings are frequent. The beach is a short walk away, and it is incredibly beautiful, as the jungle ends directly at the sea. It is not a white sand beach with fancy drink service and umbrellas, it is rugged, full of coral rock and tidal pools, and the water has some strong rip currents—but again, it is awesome. The bar and restaurant service was great, and Lenin and Fabian were wonderful and kind hosts who always went out of their way to help with a drink, an afternoon snack or a candlelight dinner. The breakfast every morning was very good, and the fresh fruit was amazing. Overall, the Shawandha provided an amazing experience for our family. The ladies at the front desk helped us to schedule some great excursions and to rent bikes to explore the area. The hotel was a great starting point to access Cahuita, Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo.

Exteriors are amazing and we'll decorated Breakfast was delicious and water fountain was great idea. Location was good, close to jaguar rescue centre, market, restaurants and chocolate tour. By car it's close to playa negra and Blanca, to cahuita and Manzanilo. We loved sofa on the terrace.

We were disappointed by the room. Unfortunately interiors in rooms are really bad equipped. there is just the most necessary items such as bed one small table full of hotels informations about their ecology and glasses and one desk for luggage. You have no place to dry your towels or clothes. Towels were clean but old and with holes. Beach is 200m far via jungle but its not private and you can not swim on it, because of the rocks and currents.

The grounds, pool area and common areas are all beautiful. A tropical jungle dream. The cabins are really rustic, which we liked and wanted for the most part. There are screens rather than windows and only a cieling fan no air conditioning. We were fine with that. The only thing we really wished we had in the room is a small refrigerator and a larger safe that fits a laptop. Other than that it was lovely. The patio had a hammock and a couch and table. The wifi kept cutting out which was annoying. Two of the front desk clerks were friendly and helpful (both male) but the one female was really unhelpful when we asked about getting a cab or where we could hike/snorkel. The breakfast was great, but the staff wasn't keeping up with things as they ran out. Very minor complaints. Overall still a really nice place to stay. The giant tree at the back of the property was spectacular.
