Great outdoor kitchen with plenty of cookware items. Social area was spacious and bright. Bunks were spacious and had curtains for privacy, which really made a difference to my comfort. The staff were helpful and kind. The location is fantastic, with all the local amenities nearby and a bus to Monteverde Cloud Forest round the corner. Bakeries, supermarkets, ATM, tourist info, taxi rank, gift shops... this was a great location.

We stayed in Room 5, which was a spacious and private option perfect for a couple. The location of the hostel is ideal, with all tours picking up right from the driveway. The staff were incredibly helpful in organizing tours and transportation to each activity, and the prices were the same as booking independently. The free Friday yoga session hosted by the hostel is a fantastic way to unwind in the afternoon. The chill-out area is also very comfortable, providing a great spot for reading and planning your next adventure. Complimentary coffee was also great!

A guest left the door unlocked and animals got in and ate our food.

The host was impeccable. I was surprised she knew my name the day after check-in. We did not interact in between and this made me feel really welcome. She even helped us out when our shuttle was cancelled last minute by calling several companies. The provided coffee was lovely and the friday yoga looked good. The communal area felt like a beach house and the slight breeze just made it even better. There was plenty of space in the dorm and next to your bed to keep your things. Beds were comfortable. Lockers were provided (bring your lock) and could easily store a backpack you bring on the plane. If you get cold during the night be sure to grab an extra blanket. It can get cold in Monteverde during the night.

The ladder of the dorm beds could be better. The only thing that was sturdy enough was the pole in front of you but this was not clear to everyone. I too fell down after grabbing a curtain rail by accident.

The staff - Johann really made a great impression during my stay. He is quick, kind and resourceful. He truly enjoys his work, and it really shows with the interaction he made with his guests. Another lady staff i observed was not as eager to help, she'll assist but will not do more unless prompted. The affiliated restaurants of this place are a must try. Although the room is quite small but functional and the shared space has a great ambiance. Highly recommended solely based on Johann, the shared space and the restaurants.

Everything! First and foremost you can’t beat the convenience of the location. Attached to the property is a Mediterranean Cafe with excellent food and below it is a Sushi Bar. Because Monteverde’s weather is sporadic at best in the rainy season, I can’t overstate the convenience of having good food and reasonably priced drinks right next door. The trees between the properties made it so I barely got wet no matter how hard it rained. My interactions with every staff member from the cleaning crew of the property to the bartender at the Sushi bar were perfect examples of service and courtesy. That being said, Tatiana, whom I had the most exposure to at Outbox Inn was exceptionally accommodating and delightful. My first day I had a lot of questions and despite the fact Tatiana was dealing with forty other things she bent over backwards to make sure all my needs were met, and never with frustration or attitude. While Tatiana wasn’t available I had the pleasure of dealing with John. John was also remarkably friendly and saw to it that my every request was met. Another extremely convenient factor was their ability to schedule all my transportation and excisions for me, and often at lower prices than other agents around town. I strongly recommend Outbox Inn! I will certainly be staying there on my next trip to Monteverde.

Great location and very nice common area (kitchen and lounge room).

Rooms are tiny so it’s not very comfy for two people. Our window was facing a wall and a construction site with people walking right past our room - it took away the sense of privacy. Also there was a really weird smell coming from the toilet (wacky plumbing I guess) and the room often smelled of smoke (coming from neighbouring facilities). There was also this random alarm noise happening every few hours. It was especially annoying as there is no extra ventilation in the room so the windows had to stay open 24/7.

It was a great stay, comfortable and the service was exceptional. The water power in the shower was great. We enjoyed very much the breakfast at the hotel’s restaurant “Open Kitchen “. All was delicious and well served. They have an additional restaurant nearby called “The Jungle” (highly recommend as well). Although it was raining most of the days of our stay, we enjoyed the activities in Monteverde. Hey, in Costa Rica you are always wet: from the rain, from the swims or from the sweat!

Had a lovely stay here in a shared 4 bed dormitory. First off, I don’t think I’ve ever had a shared hostel room with the amount of shelving, and thoughtful lighting as Outbox Inn had! More than enough room for everyone in the room to store and dry off their items. Loved how there was a purifier in the room as well to help with the dust. I enjoyed how the door to our room was a floor to ceiling window with a lovely view of the trees outside; there was one day where I spent it resting inside my room and it was nice not feeling so claustrophobic indoors. The hostel is attached to the Open Kitchen which has delicious food and drinks. Reception was super helpful and kind- they let me store my luggage for a few hours when I had to move to another hostel but couldn’t check in yet. Met some other lovely solo travelers during my stay here!

Door to the bathroom was just a thin foldable door that doesn’t fully latch fyi. Also, there doesn’t seem to be a barrier for the top bunk so be careful if you’re on the top bunk. I’ve had a few things fall down to the floor that way when I wasn’t careful getting out of my bed.

We got several recommendations from travelers about this hostel, and boy were they right! The hostel has an inviting common place, super cool Boho style design. The people were very friendly and the hostel has a good atmosphere. Everything is super clean, it has an adjacent "the open kitchen" restaurant which gives you a discount if you stay in the hostel with delicious breakfast. The owner and crew were so welcoming which gave us a feeling that we were home. It's also really easy to meet new people.

This is my favorite hostel I have ever stayed at—and I backpacked through SE Asia. And this is one of my only reviews. I care enough to write this review because I want anyone who is traveling to Santa Elena/visiting Monteverde to save themselves the hassle and stay at Outbox. It’s THE best hostel in town—verified fact because I had a few friends I had met earlier in my traveling journey stay at other hostels in Santa Elena switch to Outbox. What I love: the COZIEST mattresses with the softest blankets, the aesthetic of the main space with its high ceilings/plants/local artwork/big windows that let in loads of natural light, the outdoor kitchen space makes you feel like you’re cooking in the jungle and it’s well maintained, but most importantly the lovely lovely lovely humans who work at this hostel—especially Alex…they were all so friendly, warm, and gave excellent advice. Please do yourself the favor and book your Santa Elena stay here.
