A lovely little inn with authentic Japanese style bedding. Basic facilities (no shower), but you can use the onsen in the sister hotel next door. Handy shuttle bus to/from tsumago as it's quite far up in the mountains. They only go twice in the morning and twice in the afternoon, so check with hotel before coming. We missed it and it was quite an expensive cab ride.

Fantastic hot springs. You're able to use the sister locations much fancier amenities while paying for the cheaper room. Innkeeper was super awesome and tried his best to help us with train tickets, and shuttle ride to and from the station

Lobby was dusty and had bugs. Room itself was fine, but seeing that as we walked in was a little unnerving. Location is FAR from Nagiso city, I hadn't really checked the exact distance but I decided to wing it. Bad idea, it's a 30+ minute drive (6000 yen taxi fare). If you plan to explore the city, you're going to need to haul your bags around with you. If you're just looking for a place in the woods far from everything, then this is perfect for you

I need to start saying that this is a place in paradise. The views and the staff are incredible. They are offering a shuttle bus from the Nagiso station, so when you get outside of the station, a person might ask you where you are going, and no worries, it was in English. We stayed in a traditional room, and we slept on futons while enjoying the best view from our room. You could use the public baths- onsen- located at their sister hotel, 1 min walk. You will not find any convenience stores nearby, so make sure you send them and email and book your dinners as their restaurant is fully booked. In your confirmation email, you will find all the details. They are offering another shuttle bus in the morning to Tsumago village, and from there, you can take a light hike to Nakasendo trail. That is a must in your lifetime, especially in springtime. The staff is so friendly and helpful and willing to communicate with you. The last day our taxi didn't arrive in time for us to catch the train so they took the hotel bus and helped us reach in time. They even accompanied us to the train tracks to make sure that we were in the right spot. We will always remember this place and the staff here, and we will come back, for sure.

Staff were lovely. The onsen was wonderful, especially with the cold pool and sauna, (it had to be accessed via the hotel across the road but I didn't mind). I like wearing the yukata, haori and geta they offered. The free shuttle to Tsumago and Nagiso.

We were aware of this in advance but I think they're small inconveniences to be aware of: If you have to leave early in the morning (like we did) then you have to walk to the bus stop for 20 mins (fortunately it was downhill) or you have to book a taxi. The shuttle starts running at 9am. I appreciated the tea and coffee on offer and the fridge that was available in the common area. It would've been since to have a communal sink too, because without one it made making food, etc. a little difficult at times. We had to have an early dinner in Tsumago or bring instant food that could be cooked with a kettle due to the facilities situation.

Beautiful location in its own valley in the mountains. In late April the flowering peach trees look beautiful! This property is an annex of Hotel Fukinomori, just across the car park, and is an excellent way to enjoy the hotel’s facilities at a cheaper price, especially the amazing onsen and its view. If you don’t mind missing out on the kaiseki course meal then this is a great ryokan experience for a much lower price. It’s also a short drive / shuttle bus to the nearby post-towns of Tsumago and Magome, highly recommended!

Meals are not included and as the hotel is out in the mountains you will need to bring your own food or have a car to get to one of the restaurants a few kilometres away. The hotel sent us an email in advance to inform us of this so it was no problem, and there were refrigerators and microwaves for us to use.

The room was spartan but adequate. The onset and relaxing room (in the attached facility) are excellent and above expectations. We liked the feeling of been in the middle of the forest and we are used to futon beds. We were not surprised that there was no food available at the hotel, hower coffee, tea, fridge and microwave are provided.

The futon were quite humid and we needed to dry. The shuttle service is available only few times a day. Make sure you get it

I was a little worried after reading other reviews but I had absolutely zero problems with this property, actually I liked it. You do need t be aware that there is no food on site or food making facilities (there is a fridge, tea, hot water and cold water, as well as a vending machine for beer and other drinks). So bring food! And get it at Magome or before if you can as there wasnt much at Tsumago. We got picked up by the shuttle bus at Tsumago after walking all day, checked in to the guest house at the hotel reception and then were shown our room at Tokonomiso. The room was massive, and you set up the futons yourself which is kind of fun. They provided us with yukatas and towels and slippers to wear to go to the onsen. As others have said, you use the onsen that is part of the fancy hotel. It was bliss! In the morning the shuttle is available again to take you back to Tsumago or on to Nagiso for the train.

The location is nice, in the middle of a forest. We had a rent card and it's really suggested to move around. The structure in which we slept was a bit outdated but still nice for the price. I've appreciated the chance to use the onsen for the hotel in front, which is definitely more expensive.

It's a shame not to have the chance ha have dinner or breakfast in the main hotel paying an extra

One of the best remote places we've stayed. Mysterious ryokan in the middle of the mountains, with lush greenery, forests, and wonderful onsen. Baths have exceeded our expectations! Wooden 'rotenburo', sauna, - too many words to write to express its beauty. Try stargazing at the veranda too! Location is perfect for someone traveling by car and has a great access to Tsumago-juku or Magome-juku, old preserved Japanese towns of Edo era. Stay there for a few days to unwind. It's a perfect spot for retreat. Will return again!

The location is unbelievable: in the mountains, amid an orchard of trees in bloom! The shuttle functions very well so you can do your activités. The onsen is beautiful with outdoor Windows + an outdoor spa!!!

The place where we can eat is very spacious and nice with à little fridge and microwve but there is nothing provided in terms of cuttlery or dishes. Tea or Coffee is offered. Some dishes and cuttlery would be appreciated
