If you ever imagined a breakfast with the view, then this is definitely it!. Hotel Sassi offers an outstanding opportunity to watch over the magical Matera. With the great breakfast buffet and the view over the sassi, your stay will be stuck in the memories for sure.
The position of the hotel simply demands a light backpack. Even if you have a small cabin size luggage, you are not able to stroll it down the cobble stone street. It feels also wrong to do so because the streets are so beautiful that you feel history under your feet. Don't get me wrong - the position of the hotel is great, just do not have excessive luggage.

I loved everything about this place, from the location to the 24-hr receptio desk, the courteous, helpful and highly professional staff, the cosy old-fashioned decor in my room, the stunning panoramic view of the old city surmounted by the cathedral, the equally fabulous dining terrace and exposed stone dining room behind it, the lavish breakfast spread included in the very reasonable out-of-season price,, the wi-fi in every room, the heating, the firm comfortable bed, the cleverly compact bathroom with the great shower... But that's enough about me. Now YOU go experience it!
Are you kidding??

This hotel has the best view of Matera, it's impossible to go around and find a better view! Every corner of the hotel is magical at day and night. You have an elevator from the reception to other floors. Breakfast is very complete but very few tables outside with shadow.
The room was not what we expected because in the pictures you have a lot of different types. We stayed in the last "floor" inside the cave with a very small bathroom. The window was very small althought it had a great view to the cathedral. Take that into consideration when choosing your type of room.

Our air-conditioned room was small ... but it was literally a cave, and incredibly romantic. Very comfortable with good water pressure and a firm mattress. We had an extraordinary view of the sassi from our balcony. The breakfasts were unbelievable. Fresh fruit, eggs, pastries, meat, cheeses, and fabulous coffee. The staff was kind and helpful, and spoke enough English that we were easily able to communicate ... and they were nice enough to accommodate (and encourage) our feeble efforts at Italian. We walked for five days and were still discovering places and delicious restaurants we hadn't seen. Upon request the hotel staff arranged for a reasonably-priced driver to pick up our bags and take us directly to the Bari airport.
It was brutally hot while we were there in August. We would go back in a heartbeat but in a cooler month. The entire area is a massive three-dimensional maze, which is so much fun to get lost in ... but GPS is useless! Bring good walking shoes and be aware that you will be constantly walking up and down stone steps. No elevators. Also, you should know the hotel is referred to as both "Sassi Hotel" and "Sassi Hostel". It is the same place and is definitely a hotel, a nice one! But because we saw it listed two different ways (Hotel and Hostel) and it was difficult to know where we were in the maze anyway, initially we really weren't sure we were going to the correct place. But once we were there, it was heaven.

The location is great. Right in the heart of the Sassi region. We had a great view overlooking Matera. Breakfast was good, although it was the same for the whole stay. The staff was friendly.
The bar doesn't work after 9-10 pm, so if you are planning on a relaxing evening on the shared terrace of the hotel after your long day of walking, don't hope to get refreshments, drinks, or other. The room was okay, however, it was not very clean and it is also not on the main pictures (we hoped to get one of the rooms from the pictures, but ours was not included there). We noticed some stains on the sheets and covers, there was also dust around the bed and in the corners of the room. The bathroom also had some stains on the ground and sink. However, we are not very picky and that did not made our stay unpleasant, we still had a great time and the hotel is great for a short stay.

We spent one night in this hotel and were placed in a room with amazing view over the Sassi. Basically, this hotel offers the opportunity to “stay at the museum”. The access to the rooms is from the paved streets of Sassi and it is just a unique experience. The staff that works there is nice and willing to help. They serve good breakfast. The location is spectacular. Our room was small and simple (if you are a big person I suggest you to tell this upfront so that they place you in a more spacious room), but it had an amazing view overlooking the old city of Matera. It was also impeccably clean. I loved the unique setting of this hotel. Very authentic experience.
Nothing to complain about, actually 😃

Our room was huge and very much a sasso which we loved and made it feel a very unique and exciting place to stay. Staff at the hotel were lovely and very helpful. The location was amazing and had a fabulous view over the city and over to the duomo. Very good value for money.
Unfortunately our air conditioning was not working in the room and although the cave provided some shelter from the worst of the heat, our stay was during a severe heat warning and it was around 39 degrees outside and so it was still a bit uncomfortable sleeping at night without air conditioning

Great location in the sassi area. Such a great view from the hotel, so I didn't have to go far from the hotel to see the morning/night view of the sassi. Quite the experience of living in one of the "cave room" as well. (But the room was darker and more humid than I thought. It's all about the experience) The staffs were really nice and friendly even without English. They helped me carry my luggages when check in and out. Especially a driver, who provided a transfer to the hotel, showed me around the neighbourhood quickly and took some photos of me when I got there, and also took me to a nice focaccia place. Wish I could speak Italian.
There were ants everywhere. Maybe because my room was on the gound floor. I needed to store my snacks in a refrigerator. Finding ants swarming my thing was traumatic to be honest. Also I found a worm once. For me, who really don't like insects and usually not find ones in my apartment, the room was not quite comfortable in terms of that. Also, the bathroom didn't look clean and organized. The water flowed outside of the "bathroom" as there was nothing to stop it. (and there were ants as well) The furnitures looked old and were not quite clean, but okay since I wasn't at the hotel all the day. FYI, bed was good. I'd ask for another type of room (if any) in case there is a next time. Anyway, good experience and nice meeting good people there!

They are very responsive on the spot: we decided to stay one more night, so we could have left our luggage at the reception after first check-out, and when we returned later, they prepared another room for us, even if we didn't reserve it in advance.
When booking a room, it's a bit confusing that the photo next to the room you book is not the one you'll get on site in the end. At first, we booked a bright, windowed room with a view, but in return we got a full cave apartment, which surprised us at first ... but it was a good unexpected expirience after all. There was only this small misunderstanding about the reservation.

Oh this place! I've read a couple of mixed reviews about it and was a bit unsure what to expect but to me this hotel was one of the best stays of my life. According to the staff, we were originally booked for a cave room but this was easily changed when we asked to switch for a one with a view (we stayed end of December, off season but still). The room was not large but perfectly enough and spotlessly clean. Sure the furniture was not the newest, but together with high wooden ceilings, double windows with a view of Matera and a shower build in a wall, it just added to the charm. Excellent breakfast. Warm AC. Overall, an amazing stay. Thanks Hotel Sassy team!
