The caves converted to modern rooms are well appointed with details remaining or reconstructed of the cave inhabitants. Soaker tub. Comfortable bed and bedding. Location offers a great view across the river looking at the park. Easy hiking access to park. All your needs are met with in walking distance.

What a gem of a hotel. So many wonderful nooks and crannies, bursting with history. The staff were so friendly and accommodating. The hotel is in a fantastic location, serviced by a shuttle where you park your car and dismantle your cases. I can't recommend this hotel enough. Everything from start to finish was perfection, from the candlelit room and bathroom, to the cocktails we had under the vines, and to the breakfast which is one of the best spreads we've ever had (our group agreed the scrambled eggs were some of the tastiest we had ever had). Five stars from me. Grazie mille!

The breakfast was so incredibly delicious, fresh, beautiful, thoughtfully laid out, extensive and varied, healthy, and had original local freshly baked breakfast sweets. The location is a once and a lifetime experience. We also had a private trou of the city with an archeologist whose grandmother had lived in the caves until her 20s and just died at 94. The staff is very thoughtful and organized; they greatly respect the meaning of the history there. We love this place and will never forget it. We learned about history in a visceral way, sleeping a cave that goes back 8,000 years (now with a comfortable bed and running water and beautiful local fruit to great you. HIghly r3ecommend.

This is a very interesting hotel, made up of a series of cave houses that have been very well modernized (while still retaining the original structures). The staff were excellent: friendly and very helpful (and clearly very motivated by the "mission" of rescuing these types of historical properties). The breakfast was very good. And Matera is an amazing city, in general.

You should not come to this hotel expected 4-star facilities that would not be appropriate with the retention of the historical features (eg., elevators, gyms, pool, A/C, etc.). Also, older visitors would have to be very careful with the very uneven surfaces.

We originally booked one of the cave rooms. We ended up changing. It just wasn’t for me. I think a great experience for maybe a night. But they are really damp and dark. You need a torch to see your suitcase. And we were traveling as an adult family so the open bathroom was an issue. The toilet was behind my son’s bed. And you have to keep your door open so you can get a bit of light in and people just walk in to have a look. Some people may love it but it wasn’t fun for me. So they switched us to a room in “the palace”. Up a lot of stairs but wow!!!! One of the most beautiful rooms I have ever stayed in. The view was spectacular. Loved every second of it

If you are gluten free there are not a lot of options. Breakfast was really good just no breads etc I advised the hotel before I came to check if options were available and was told no problem. But at breakfast I was given a gluten free chocolate muffin I took this with us and when I opened both of them from the two breakfasts they were both covered in mold. I think really out out of date

This is so much more than just accommodation. Staying overnight in a beautifully restored cave is an experience that challenges your concept of hospitality. Raw enough to immerse you in the history of the Sassi and luxurious enough to make sure all your requirements are met. Breakfast was a wonderful spread of local product presented in the most charming of ways. I have been told it’s a luxury of emotions, and that it is.

Large mirror and better lighting for makeup would have been ideal but that would probably have diminished some of its raw charm by making it too comfortable and mundane. No food in the room was also a bit of a disappointment most especially since they offer in room dining that can only be consumed on the bench outside the room.

The room was spacious, beautifully renovated and furnished, with modern amenities. Our room had only two small windows, more for light than views. It was wired for electric lighting and outlets, but the provided candles created a rustic and romantic atmosphere. It was convenient to the office and the breakfast room. The location is at the edge of the canyon and our door opened directly onto a terrace with an unobstructed 180-degree view of the dramatic ravine immediately below. The surroundings were equally stunning by day or night. The breakfast was superb, the offerings were varied and bountiful.

The stone pavements of the exterior walks and streets could be a little slippery in the rain. Because of this and all of the steps, a walking stick would be helpful for older visitors in any weather.

Fruit bowl and wine on arrival to the room. Palazzo bed was so comfortable. Breakfast was excellent, wonderful choice of delicious foods. The day we left, we couldn’t stay for breakfast as we were driving to Tuscany and the kitchrn lady was so friendly meeting us just before 7 am to give us the most delicious breakfast all beautifully packaged up for our drive to Tuscany. It was delicious and we were very grateful. Mille grazie

Beautiful, unique hotel that compliments the surroundings with comfort and friendly team. Franchesca was very hospitable and Mary in the breakfast area also lovely. I really appreciated the carrying of my bags to the taxi.

The gentleman at front desk who laughed when I asked if it was safe as a woman alone to walk to restaurants. When you are in a foreign country alone one always asks this question and does not appreciate this response. The female staff at the hotel are much more guest focused and warm.

The most fabulous stay- this hotel is like no other we had stayed at; the location is surreal, set within the stone/ caves it felt like stepping back in time without losing the luxury of a hotel. Set within the UNESCO area the hotel has kept the charm of the area, with candles, original keys and other small touches. The breakfast was incredible with a large array of fruits, meats, cheeses, yoghurts, cereals, traditional cakes, breads etc. The staff provided an impeccable service, providing recommendations for restaurants, the room was spotless and extra touches provided for our honeymoon.
