we did not stay at Middlefontein farm but in Kombro Kind a B&B in town, Joanita was very accomodating and welcoming. we arrived exhausted after driving a long stretch of dirt road and a flat tyre, so we were happy and relieved to get a room where we were supposed to fetch the keys for Middlefontein farm. Joanita is a "real" host, understands the lows and highs of her guests, and has empathy and solutions for whatever problem comes along.
the walls between the rooms are a bit thin, guess that's how the typical Sutherland houses are constructed it was a B&B without breakfast which we knew, but we got excellent where to get a really good breakfast

Loved how quaint and old the house is. It was almost like staying in a museum. Private and remote with access to a gorgeous stream.
I suppose it’s part of the experience but there is no power and we didn’t shower due to the strong sulphur smell of the water. But the place was extremely clean and otherwise wonderful. I would also suggest the host gets a carbon monoxide/ gas detector. A gas smell was quite strongly present and my wife would have been more at ease knowing it was safe with a detector.

The establishment was very helpful in providing us with accommodation well suited to my 90-year old mom. Very comfortable bed and superior quality bedding. Room is spacious and guests also have access to a shared sitting room and lovely outside stoep. Safe undercover parking provided. Centrally located within walking distance of restaurants. Very good information provided about attractions in the area.

Great off-grid getaway offering beautiful hiking routes and unreal night skies. Property has a cozy indoor fireplace / braai and is situated far from all other units with loads of privacy. The shower is be a bit tricky as it is gas operated, so would recommend showering during the day in winter. Would definitely return for another stay and recommend to all.

Natural setting, beautiful scenery Magnificent sunset Braai was convenient Silence We had everything we needed for one night to go to star gazing. We were warm enough. We liked the walking, Lovers Walk of 5km was pleasant before breakfast and check out. Really worthwhile to also watch the 4D show at the Planetarium.
The bed could be more comfortable.

Very close to town and we had the whole house to ourselves. 2 rooms with extra bed in lounge. More than enough space for our family of 5. Host made a lot of effort around the property, for e.g walking trails with poems on along the route. Great base to explore the stargazing options in the region.
Not much not too like.

We stayed in Fonteintjie cottage which is ideal accommodation for a couple wanting a cosy traditional cottage in a rural but secure location, close to the amenities of Sutherland town. The cottage is private, with a large, covered stoop and braai, which gets shade in the evening. The beds are comfortable, and the shower is good. Kitchen facilities are adequate with a useful 'welcome pack'. It was hot during our stay, but there is ample warm bedding and heating for colder weather. The owner has recently provided wi-fi to the cottage which works very well. There are also well described walking trails direct from the cottage.
Better curtains to help keep the cottage cool in summer, dark at night and warm in winter would be nice.

The farm is beautiful with the additional bonus of 3, 6 and 12km hikes on the property. We did the 6km Hike and i wish we had the time to do the 12km. The terrain is stark contrast to the river, the stone and bush of the Karoo. The fire inside the place kept the cold out and every room was warm.

A delightful, recently renovated authentic cottage in a beautiful setting overlooking a river and mountains. Well marked and maintained hiking and mountain rain bike trails (3, 6 and 6 in). The hostess, Juanita, is extremely helpful and attentive. Ideal for people who want to get away from the hustle and bustle.
Nothing.

The rustic cottage is isolated, has no electricity, which makes for good star gazing. Ample opportunities to hike on the property. Gas plate for cooking is provided, as well as gas geyser, so that showering is possible. Of course, no electricity, no aircon. But the old, thick stone walls keep out some of the summer heat. For winter there is a large fire place in the room.
The bed undercarriage is squeeky. The matress is good
