Overall this is a great place to stay for a few days. The setting is wonderful and you do feel like you are really in the jungle at times. The rooms are very beautifully decorated and have most of the conveniences you could expect. The bathroom was spacious and the shower is powerful and very welcome after some very (very) hot days in mid-April! There are some really interesting features at this hotel such as the Weary Dunlop museum (all about the Burma, aka 'death', railway) and particularly the Jack Chalker gallery which is unique. The staff were mostly incredibly kind, helpful and efficient and went out of their way to help when they could. The food was decent but not exceptional and I think there could have been a few more non-Thai options.

A common complaint in Thai hotels... The selection of 'Western' food at breakfast was not great. The bread and jam were of the lowest quality and, as usual, the chicken sausages were pretty bad. The coffee could have been better too. In the room the TV was rather small and had no English language channels so pointless for non Thai speakers. We also thought it was rather strange that the main swimming pool had no shallow end (if you were less than about 1.60m you would have trouble standing at all), and we thought there could have been more places to sit and place belongings around the pool area.

There are many, many reasons to love this resort - especially the amazing riverside location and the comfortable rooms. We were very happy that the staff went to great lengths to accommodate our dietary requests (vegetarian / gluten-free), though we were a little disappointed that the breakfast buffet was very meat-dominant, which even regular meat-eaters might find a bit heavy first thing in the morning. We stayed in a private onsen villa, and the room was charming (the view was incredible). Our one and only real negative was that in both the private onsen in the room and the main hot spring pool in the resort (next to the regular swimming pool), chlorine is used in the water. As hot spring enthusiasts (we have travelled to more than a thousand around the world), we have to say that this is exceptionally unusual, entirely unnecessary and also completely negates the beneficial effects of the minerals in the thermal water. Thermal water constantly flowing into (and out of) a pool/tub should have no artifical chemicals added, and none of the nearby local hot springs in the region that we visited were doing this...so I'd encourage the resort to stop using chlorine and allow guests to enjoy a totally natural thermal experience.

Our stay at Home Phutoey River Resort was an absolute retreat into nature. The serene sounds of nature—birds chirping and the soothing flow of the river—created a peaceful atmosphere that we thoroughly enjoyed. The hot springs were a highlight, offering a perfect way to unwind and relax. The experience was so calming that we wished we could have extended our stay to explore more of the activities available. The staff provided excellent service, always attentive and accommodating, which added to the overall positive experience. This resort is a true gem for anyone looking to disconnect and recharge in a tranquil, natural setting. We can't wait to return!

While our stay at Home Phutoey River Resort was mostly enjoyable, we did have a concerning experience. When we inquired about the presence of snakes, we were assured there were none. However, during our time at the viewpoint, while we were enjoying the beautiful river view, we spotted a long snake. This unexpected encounter was quite frightening and dampened our sense of safety. It’s something to be mindful of for future guests who might have similar concerns.

Good resort with plenty of facilities, nice big room and convenient to hellfire pass. if you do go beware of the high transport prices charged by the hotel. ask a few of the local drivers at the train station for their contact details, they will charge you a fraction of the price. we were aware of this in advance and it saved us a small fortune.

The only thing that let the hotel down was the bland food in the restaurant, because hellfire pass is so remote you wont have many options but to eat at the hotel so take plenty of snacks and drink. you can ask your driver to stop at the 7-11 in nam tok and stock up on the way to the hotel. e.g a bottle of water is 30 baht at the hotel compared to 6 in the shop

Great location, staff were friendly and helpful. The pool was awesome and the hot spa next to it was great also. Don't miss it. Rooms are big and nice, the AC works great. I would stay here again.

Well.. I have to admit the dinning wasn't the greatest. Breakfast was fine, nothing to write home about, we decided to have dinner there one night, it was not the greatest. Sorry guys but the local spots down the road were much nicer and fresher and I would go to them.

Rooms are spacious and very well appointed. Onsen and river view were definitely worth the extra. Beds were super comftable. Staff were fabulous dealing with a problem that I had caused by changing my date of stay. Pool, lake and hot spring area were stunningly beautiful. Restaurant had a good choice and served excellent food. All could be ordered for room service. On final morning went to the museum area. The museum provided a stark reminder of the past and also informed of how the resort continues to educate the current generation on past.

- the onsen villas with river view were superb, nothing beat soaking in your private onsen in the morning watching over the river and listening to the jungle sounds - the main onsen / pool area was always quiet and it almost felt like we had it to ourselves - very prompt room service - the resort overall is very picturesque - if you really want to feel disconnected from the world, this place is it

- agreeing with other revierwers, you are kind of 'stuck' there as nothing is around or within easy reach, but knowing that in advance one can of course bring additional snacks / drinks etc - the staff was the 'unfriendliest' we've encountered in thailand, it does seem like they are also not very happy to be working in such a remote location - the breakfast buffet was the weakest in terms of choice in all of the hotels / resorts we've stayed in

Truly a beautiful location, right alongside the river. An easy 3.5 hour drive from Bangkok, it was perfect for a few quiet days. You do really need a car to explore the area, so we stayed mainly at the hotel. The grounds are lovely and nicely cared for. The pool near the lake is really very lovely and the rooms were big and comfortable, with nice bathrooms. The description of WW2 history on site was very interesting. The lake is small, but kayaking was still good fun.

Some of the communal areas could use more love and attention (e.g. the interesting WW2 museum on site as well as the reception / central area. The food was very average: the breakfast was sparce and dinner dishes were not particularly tasty. For somewhere so far away, this is a real pitty. The prices of the available tours and transfers are absurd, discouraging us from going on any of them. The wifi was really very bad and erratic. For a remote location, also very surprising that there was no spa/wellness services available.

The connection with the Death Railway came as a wonderful surprise, we knew nothing about this from the Hellfire Pass museum. Enhanced what was already a fantastic resort. Loved the surrounding jungle, beautifully looked after, lovely wooden buildings and nice swimming pool. The restaurant was modestly priced and had a very good choice of dishes, which was appreciated as it would have been quite difficult to leave the resort to find an evening meal.

On the second night with more guests, the staff struggled to cope with the numbers at dinner. Otherwise no complaints.

This was not my first stay at HPR. I have stayed with my family as well as with school parties and we have used many of the facilities which the hotel has to offer. This time I was staying alone because I wanted to explore the Burma railway sites in the vicinity

The ONLY complaint that I could really level was that the hot water took an age to come through and when it did it nearly roasted me, however, that is a small thing and one which you can soon master. Other than that the place was absolutely great.
