Unfortunately the room we had booked (COURTYARD DOUBLE) was changed to double room in main hotel which I had not booked because of many stairs and my husbands difficulty in walking. I had originally contacted hotel directly and was told there were no rooms available on my dates so I then went to BOOKING.COM were I booked COURTYARD ROOM successfully. But luckily TRACY on reception saw the error and quickly altered our rooms the next day. We could not have managed to stay with rooms up stairs if she had not done this. So a BIG THANK YOU to Tracy for saving our stay. She was excellent She saved our holiday

More choice and lighter bar meals. Inability to make a cocktail!

An excellent 2 night stay in January when the weather was cold but dry so the fires in the bar were much appreciated after a long walking day. Our room was large with a comfy seating area, fabulous thick curtains and the heaviest cushions I have ever encountered. All felt very cosy. The breakfasts were superb - great choice, freshly cooked for you and totally delicious. Crickhowell is a lovely town and the surrounding areas great for walking and exploring.

the bathroom was chilly even though it had a heated towel rail - the tiled floor is very cold! Bring slippers or thick socks.

I am a solo traveller and I couldn't have felt more welcome at this hotel. I was greeted warmly by the lady on reception who took me up to my room, and helped me with my luggage. Later on I had a mulled wine in the bar, served by a polite young man. The bar is spacious but still cosy as it is made up of several smaller spaces. I had dinner in the restaurant and was seated at the perfect table, from where I could admire the Christmas decorations. The waiter was outstanding, it's not often that I receive such good service in a restaurant! Breakfast was excellent too, good food, no delays and the hot course did not arrive when I was still eating my yogurt!

Nothing, i had a lovely time.

Hotel was great. nice warm welcome at reception/ Room was spacious and as expected. Breakfast service was really good

The bed had a footboard. Not ideal as I couldnt really stretch out to sleep. The shower was over the bath which is never a good thing, in my book. Although the shower itself was pretty good. The restauarant was closed on a Monday and we were informed but eating in the bar was an odd affair. They must be doing something right as it was fully booked but it was a very chaotic place to be and not really relaxing. Food came quickly and was plentiful but almost too quickly and was of mediocre quality I am afraid

The staff were perfect: friendly, professional and very helpful. The breakfast was excellent: good choices, well-cooked and well-presented, wonderful service. The hotel was characterful and made a welcome change from the usual samey chains. The shower was hot and powerful, and the toiletries were of high quality. The tea and coffee tray was also good.

The room was lovely, but the cleaning wasn't perfect, and the furniture would benefit from some TLC. We have nothing but old furniture at home, and my husband was a furniture restorer. It wouldn't take much to perk the furniture up a bit. It was also a shame there was rot in the window frame.

Fabulous location in the centre of Crickhowell. We used the hotel as an overnight base as we were visiting the Hay Literature Festival which is 30 minute drive away. Lovely, friendly greeting from the lady at reception who advised that we had been upgraded to a courtyard room. The room was spacious, clean and well decorated- very pleased.Good size bathroom well stocked with towels and a few toiletries. We booked a table for an evening meal ( good job we booked, the restaurant was very busy). Food was excellent and reasonably priced. Breakfast was also very good. Would definitely stay here again. Crickhowell is a lovely place to visit and an ideal base for exploring Bannau Brycheiniog.

Nothing really.

Great stay at the Bear. It is a lively pub with good food and friendly atmosphere. We had a nice little room slightly apart from the main pub which was dog friendly (£20 surcharge for the dog). They were able to make us a vegan breakfast when we requested it in advance of our stay.

Maybe a little pricey for the size of room and I thought the £20 surcharge for the dog was a little much although they did set up the rooms nicely for him with a little welcome pack, bowls, towel and mat. The checkin process was a little slow as they had so many people ringing up to book meals etc. The breakfast was nice but could have done with some vegan spread for the toast!

The room I had was lovely and clean and had been refurbished. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was really nice and modern.

I found the restaurant food very poor. I had a burger and it was full of oil, chips were overcooked. Disappointing after all the hype about the food. The service was strange as well. A waiter took me to a table and gave me a menu but then wanted me to come to the bar to order and I had to pay at the till. It just seemed disjointed. The decor in the pub was very worn and dated. I know it’s an old pub but there’s a difference between old style and worn!

The hotel was full of character - a true original coaching inn superbly updated without loss of coziness and comfort. The staff, whether bar, restaurant, cleaning or reception were all very helpful and friendly. The food offered was excellent. The festive decorations were fantastic.

There is no negative comment to make - my wife’s birthday was a wonderful celebration for which I owe a very huge thank you to everyone at the Bear!

Set in the historic surroundings of a 14th century coaching inn ,this hotel provides all the modern facilities we are now used It has successfully combined its traditional heritage with the needs of todays travellers. Its rooms are charming set inside the main building and in a courtyard extension built by the current owners. The hotel has a fine reputation for its food and every occasion we have dined there it has lived up to its reputation. The bar area is large and extensive and is a regular for the residents of Crickhowell and its surrounding areas. The service in all areas of this wonderful hotel is impeccable

We love everything about this hotel and would change nothing
