October 2024

We had a lovely stay with my partner and our family dog in October. The food was delicious and cooked better than in some of the restaurants I visited in London, nothing was too much for Judy and Mark. It is easy to get to by bus from Exeter and everybody is very welcoming and friendly. Accommodation is good for a quiet stay and we enjoyed a garden area outside and seeing horses, alpacas and rabbits kept by the owners. The dog beg, bowl, a towel and even biscuits were provided for our dog free of charge.

There is only one bus and it has a very limited service Monday to Saturday with no service on Sunday. If you don't drive, there is not much to see and roads are not suitable for pedestrians to walk from one village to another. But if you just want a quiet retreat in the countryside, it's a very lovely place to be when the weather is good.

We needed a place to stay to break up a journey and this was ideal. Rooms were spotless with the usual welcome tray. We ate in their pub at night and it was very good and the locals were extremely friendly sharing banter. The next morning we had a cooked breakfast for £10 each and was well worth it. I would not hesitate to recommend the Royal Oak in Dunsford for an overnight stay.

The steps leading down from the rooms to the pub are a little bit iffy if you aren't fully mobile.

The centre of a quiet little village - feels like the middle of nowhere - Warm welcome, uncluttered functional room , a lot quieter than the normal "room in a pub". Everything worked. Great food served promptly in warm and very pleasant surroundings in the pub. Very good nights sleep and a pleasure waking up to the sound of sheep and phesants ! And excellent value .

Not the place for you If you want a flash wet room with power shower, oversized beds and expresso coffee on tap !

The breakfast was more than great as it was truly value for money - in fact I would have paid more for it. The choice was more than you get at some venues where it costs twice the price and is not a patch on what was on offer here. Nothing was too much trouble and all the items on the full English breakfast were cooked to perfection.

There wasn't anything I didn't like. I stayed on a quiet night. It would of been nice to have other guests in the pub but this was not an issue at all for the hosts or their extended family of cats...

Loved the quirky old building and the lovely gardens Also after being a bit disappointed to find out that the pub was closed on Mondays we then really enjoyed the fact that they prepared food for us in the pub and we were able to have a couple of drinks with our food .

Initially disappointed to find out that the pub was closed on Mondays but please see above to see how well the owners dealt with it

The Pub and the dinner we had was brillant and my Fish an Chips ...to die for.! All the staff were friendly and to see half if the village mingling was a wonderful experience

What I was missing were any shelfs in the bathroom to put something on or any hooks at the wall for towles. Otherwise a place I can recommend for that money

Very quiet and beautiful area right on the border of Dartmoor Park. Very nice owners. A place to relax, it's a pity I was there only one night and left very early.

Uncomfortable mattresses but that's an individual matter. Small pockets of mold in the bathroom but that's the UK norm even in much more expensive and reputable hotels

Really lovely owners, I was welcomed and shown to my room and made to feel very much at home. I had dinner and breakfast at the property, there is an ample menu and food is cooked to order, so is fresh and tasty. The pub has its own car park, slightly further along form the property itself, so there is good off road parking. The room was to the rear of the pub in converted outbuildings. It was well appointed with an ensuite, and was toasty warm.

Nothing - the weather was terrible, that's not their fault!

It was very basic. But you are not paying too dollar. It does what it says on the tin. Staff very nice. Breakfast was well worth the £10 per person. Fruit/yoghurt/cereal/full English snd. Unlimited tea/coffee. Bedroom clean and tidy. Bed comfortable.

Don’t expect luxury. But it is good if you just need to put your head down.

This was a perfect find when my return ferry to Plymouth was delayed. I was travelling by motorbike and the prospect of a long wet journey to Edinburgh at night on the motorway was not one I relished. A cottage to myself, beautifully presented with ensuite facilities and tea and coffee making in the room, just perfect! I was offered dinner in the pub but as I had already eaten I declined the offer and also breakfast as I planned to leave early 7am for my trip North the next day. Although through necessity, this was just somewhere to lay my head for a few hours, I would really have liked to have spent more time there. The cottage was very comfortable and the attention to detail was noticeable. The pub looked warm and inviting and the owners seem very friendly. Don't p9verlook this place if you are looking for something in the area.

Nothing at all, this place was just great!
