We loved our stay in this beautifully renovated (ongoing) 700 year old hotel nestled in the lovely Cotswold village of Shipton-Under-Wychwood, a few miles north of Burford. It’s run by delightful husband and wife team Andy & Anne-Marie, with their two sons along with a lovely team of staff. Their food is outstanding and the service is warm and friendly. There are a couple of pubs in the village but the dinner was so good on our first night at the hotel we decided to eat in the hotel restaurant both nights! We were blown away by the crispy bacon seared scallops! Breakfast was also great. Our room (the Pump Room) was a superior king, clean, comfortable and spacious with lots of character and a nice seating area plus private en-suite with toiletries and bathrobes provided.

There was very little we didn’t like. The car park is not very well signposted and easy to miss, especially when it’s dark, being just past the main entrance if the hotel is on your left. The shower was a little temperamental so not always a consistent temperature/pressure.

The staff were all lovely, extremely helpful and very welcoming. The building itself - especially the fireplace and the main reception area - was full of character and exactly what I picture when I think of a Cotswold country pub. The food was superb, from breakfast to the dinner options, as well as the selection of drinks. Superb place to stay when in the Cotswolds.

Wouldn’t say there was anything we didn’t like about the property. Being a building of such age there were areas that were under repair etc, but that didn’t affect our stay so cannot be used as criticism. Instructions such as the WiFi password need to be kept within the rooms. Allocating an area to sit and relax on comfy chairs/sofas to read etc would be a good addition to the place.

What a beautiful place. Full of history. Very unique. Great location. Friendly staff. Our room was clean and finished to high standard. Will be returning so we can try some of the food :)

Really was missing some welcome information in the room. Had to ask about breakfast times and wifi. Would have been nice to have some info about the history of the place, opening times etc.. Was disappointed that the bar wasn’t open on the evening, realise it was Sunday but gutted we couldn’t eat here on the evening. Would have been good if there was a designated check in area we felt a bit awkward standing in the eating area with our bags to check in, as we weren’t made aware where to go at first. Overall wonderful stay just a few little things would have made it 10/10.

Lovely ’Olde world’ atmosphere created by owner family, they were very welcoming. Background music, village situation and rustic gardens all made for a charming environment in which to stay. Our bedroom was very comfortable and was of the highest standard of cleanliness.

The bathroom was beautifully appointed, but as an older person I would have liked a grab rail, and a bath mat provided in a cupboard somewhere. The shower was over the bath; having been hospitalised by slipping on neat shampoo in similar circumstances, I feel this safety aspect needs to be addressed. It would have been interesting to have a potted history of the building as hard copy in the bedroom for visitors from abroad and also for my husband who doesn’t ’do’ computers!

The location was amazing, but anything in the Cotswolds is great!! The owners were very friendly and chatted with us quite a bit. Lovely people. The breakfast was really good and the service excellent. The room was unique as it was a modernized, very old Monks habitat!!! They did a great job with the style and execution of the changes. Really enjoyed our stay.

The only reason I gave a 9 was because the restaurant was closed in the evening on both Sunday and Monday. Not really a big deal because the owner gave us some excellent recommendations and even booked us into a local restaurant, that was spectacular.

A beautiful old building full of character. A warm welcome and helpful staff. A comfortable bed and very good breakfast. The location was good for visiting the Cotswolds and there is a car park. There was a good cupboard with hangers and bathrobes. Bedside tables with drawers on both sides and lamps. Variety of teabags and coffee as well as bottles of water.

Our room had a shower but we didn't manage to get any really hot water out of it. We're not shower fans and there were no instructions but it didn't appear to be complicated and we did what seemed logical. The ceiling light was rather dim so we were glad to be reading our Kindles rather than books. But in a place as old as that, all the rooms will be different.

The hotel was absolutely stunning and very special. We are history fans , so it was a real treat to stay here . The hotel location was fantastic and near to lots of places we wanted to visit . The owners and staff were so friendly and very attentive. Overall we were made feel so welcome and relaxed .

Saying I didn’t like something would be too strong , just it was a shame the restaurant part wasn’t open in full , we could have breakfast but no dinner or lunch daily , except lunch on Sunday . Also the bar wasn’t open regularly. Opened if there were guests around , I understand but seemed a little odd . We understand the restaurant part is waiting a licence and will be fully available soon . There were two very local pub restaurants just yards away from The Crown , that were fantastic and many places just minutes away in a car , so we had lots of great options .

There was nothing we didn’t like about this property. Walking from the car park into the courtyard, you walked into a medieval world of fantastic proportions. The courtyard was a beautiful garden where you could sit in peace. Moving into the main building was just as breathtaking. 14th century reception room with high, beamed ceiling and a dual staircase leading to modern bedrooms. Our bedroom overlooked the courtyard and we were visited every morning by white doves on the window sill. The room was cleaned perfectly every day and the en-suite shower room was perfect. On arrival we were warned that, due to the age of the house we might experience some issues with the plumbing but this never happened during our stay. We were booked for bed and breakfast. The breakfast was served in the bar room. Always freshly cooked and a god menu to choose from. The location of the hotel was perfect for touring the Cotswolds. Most places of interest were within an hours drive of the hotel, many much less. The hotel is family run by one of the nicest families I have ever met. Andrew, Ann and Will were such great hosts, full of stories about the history of the hotel and suggestions about places to visit. One of the highlights of the visit was sitting in the bar at night talking to Andrew and Will and playing with Bertie the Labrador. Day to day cleaning was done by Chris, a wonderful lady. In short, I cannot praise this establishment enough. Health willing I would love to make a return visit. I certainly recommend the Crown to anyone.

Nothing. I can’t praise the establishment enough.

The property overall was great. Tons of character, history and charm. The owner couple is warm and inviting. The breakfast is everything you could ask for. Really great.

But..... We rented a two bedroom family room. Upon departure, we were charged an unexpected additional 100 pounds for our two children. We were also charged 65 pounds for 2 scotches and two glasses of white sav blanc. Seemed a bit high. But there are no posted prices, so I guess you take what you get. No hot water in the shower and a bit mold in the several parts of the ceiling from obvious water damage. The newer owners are obviously putting in allot work to get this two a great product, but not all the way there just yet.

We both absolutely loved our stay at The Crown. It was fantastic from start to finish. The staff were friendly and couldn’t be more helpful. We stayed in the Ascot Room which was perfect for what we needed. It had an en-suite and tea/coffee making facilities. Breakfast was superb with plenty of choice and the service was quick. The restaurant was not open during our stay but this did not affect our visit as there’s still plenty of choice in the area. The bar however was open and served drinks till late both nights. We would 100% stay again and hope to do so in the near future!

Everything was fantastic
