Wonderful experience including hard to beat local dinner that went in and on and on and was delicious and interesting… (included horse meat sashimi!) breakfast was excellent and the onsens in the hotel lovely albeit pretty hot… We had booked two rooms for three people each which were converted at our request and no additional cost to three twin rooms. Wonderful and memorable stay.

The authentic dining and private bath experience, and staying in a property that was apparently a couple of hundred years old belonging to a samurai. A pleasant walk to the property from Aso station surrounded by the Aso mountains and through a quiet Japanese village is memorable.
While the room has an attached toilet, the toilet does not come with shower facility. While it did not pose a problem for us as we stayed only for a night and managed to book the private bath, may be a point of consideration for those who prefers rooms with attached bathing facilities. I was also not used to sleeping on the futon that we had to set up ourselves as the property does not prepare the beds.

The venue itself is stunning, an old Samurai house, very ancient and cool. The staff were incredible, very attentive to every request- including building an entire vegetarian menu (!!!) with local ingredients for my wife (we did notify beforehand). The food overall in the dinners was outstanding, we stayed for two nights and had two completely different dishes. The private onsen was amazing, just what you need after a long day out.
Breakfast could be better - Japanese style only, hard for our appetite Also, Japanese style sleeping is not for everyone

Smoking allowed on the property so the room had a bit of old cigarette smoke smell

Love the rustic original feel of the old house. Feels like I went back to the past into another time. Also the hostess was amazing host with great English. And the food cooked by her husband was so amazing with the huge variety of local dishes served. Did not have repeats for the 2 nights
The futon was a little thin on the tatami mat. Was not suitable for side sleepers. Would also have loved if there was a smart tv to stream our own media.

The house is a beautiful traditional Japanese house with a shared onsen bath and a private one that you can book for free. The room is clean and cozy with a window looking out to a Japanese garden. Food was exceptional! We were served homemade miso soup and home grown rice which were absolutely delicious. The meals also include many local ingredients and dishes like horse meat, local beef, trout and seasonal veggies. Highly recommended if you want a traditional ryokan experience 👍
It was a bit hard to find even with GPS

A very well maintained, heartwarming traditional Japanese ryokan! Welcomed by friendly lady owner and room was very big for two people. Dinner and breakfast were superb, many homemade pickles and fresh vegetables. Hot spring was small but hot enough to relieve fatigue. Enjoyed the foods and hotspring! Fully recharged after the stay.
Location appeared in Google Map but it led us to a very narrow road, almost inaccessible by car. Car park was provided but slightly narrow. Too bad the kashikiri hot spring was limited and fully booked, so we didn't get to try.

We loved our stay in this traditional ryokan and the very attentive staff made it feel very homely and welcoming. Our room was cozy, the dinner and breakfast were delicious (and they very kindly accommodated our vegetarian request), and the highlight of our stay was a private onsen we could book without any additional charge.
Be mindful of payment in cash. Also we struggled to find the Ryokan, we should have paid more attention to the wooden signs along the way with arrows.

Location was a little difficult to find as it was located down some really small roads. But there were signages along the way to guide us. The exterior of the ryokan was very quaint. We booked a tatami room for four of us, including dinner and breakfast. It was a small ryokan with not many rooms, but very warm service. The meals were very lavish! The onsen facilities were a bit small, but since the ryokan was small, it wasn't really crowded. I think most guests chose to use the private onsen which you could book in advance.
Apart from the onsen being very small, nothing. It was a very enjoyable stay.
