I booked a room with the access to the inner courtyard. It was beautiful, with Japanese stone lanterns, with a pine tree, a red maple tree and bright green moss. Everything was authentic and it felt like I was a hundred years back. However, all the facilities were modern and in an excellent condition. The owner was a lovely woman, warmly welcoming her guests. She served a traditional Japanese breakfast in the morning. The location is near a few bus stops so it was very easy to go around the city. It took about half an hour by bus to come to the hotel from Kyoto station. The Imperial palace is about 20 min walk away, the same for the subway. It was exactly what I was looking for - to spend a few days in a quiet and secluded place in the middle of the peak tourist season in Kyoto.
The only irritating thing was weak wi-fi connection. It was a challenge to do video calls with the family.

Beautiful traditional Ryokan- exactly what we wanted. Lovely and serene garden. Owner was super helpful in recommending nearby restaurants and calling taxis.
Pillows could have been more comfortable- pretty small & dense material. Would be great to have more than one pillow per bed as many people have back problems and need to sleep with a pillow between/under the knees. Also a sheet would be great too as the comforter- while it was wonderful, was a bit too hot without a sheet or thin blanket under it. I travel with a sarong, so it was fine- just a suggestion.

The ryokan was simply stunning. Facilities were really well kept, traditional Japanese house. The lady in charge of the ryokan was an absolute delight, super kind, attentive and helpful. She helped us receive our luggage through Yamato while we were out enjoying the city, she helped us forward our luggage through Yamato as well and she was an AMAZING host. Also the traditional breakfast offered was delicious!
The only thing we would’ve liked is that there were no stairs to our room, but this speaks to the traditional space it is, as ryokans usually have this type of layout. Also, shower inside the room without having to go down and up a flight of stairs would’ve been nice.

The place was really lovely to stay in - it felt like a very traditional Japanese home. The room was spacious and had a toilet, sink and mirror attached, the main bathroom was separate but had a full shower room with great shampoo, conditioner and body wash. The place was cleaned daily with new towels each day and your bed made. The owner was lovely and greeted you each time you came back from being out. It rained when we visited and she kindly let us borrow umbrellas. It was a quiet area and the bed was super comfortable.
I didn't realise just how far away from things this stay is. If you don't mind walking to places or paying for a taxi, then it's fine! We found the busses to be too crowded so we would walk to JR Nijo station and take the local trains around the city or to Kyoto station for other train lines. You are also asked to pay an 'accomodation tax' upon arrival which was a surprise - they also asked it to be in cash, so it was lucky I had some on me. Our room was up a very steep set of stairs and the bathroom was down stairs (very private) but just in case you have a disability or can't do stairs - I would let the owner know first.

The host was super friendly and passionate and cooked a delicious breakfast. Very relaxed atmosphere, in a quiet street. Simple bedroom, but very spacious and comfortable. Had a nice balcony overlooking the neighbouring street.
The location is out of the way of lots of attractions in Kyoto, and you have to walk about 10-15 minutes to get to streets with restaurants. On the flip side, it means it's very quiet and peaceful during your stay and is a welcome change of pace from the hustle and bustle of the busier areas in town.

The room was large with a beautiful view of a Japanese garden. We were not to go into the garden but could open the door for fresh air. The beds were super comfortable and the bath was deep. We ordered the traditional Japanese rice breakfast (an extra Y1800 each), whilst the coffee was excellent it wasn't worth the additional Y790. An accomodation fee was charged Y1200. The host was lovely and happy to help.
There are three rooms at the Ryokan but we were the only guests there. It was very quiet and situated in a residential area. The bus was easy to catch however.

The hotel room was exceptionally clean and had an amazing view of a small, private Japanese garden. The room was very very clean, and was tidied up daily - with all the amenities and water bottles replaced too. We appreciated the daily water so much after long days of walking! The best part was the shower.... it was to die for!
The location is tucked away in a neighborhood, so not very close to the tourist attractions but we did not mind this since Kyoto is so large, there is likely no perfect location. We really enjoyed staying in a non-touristy neighborhood and we had the chance to try authentic restaurants in the area because of this -which we absolutely loved (some of the best places we went in all of Japan).

We loved the Ryokan experience. We had the biggest room in the Ryokan with the full garden view and access. It was a spacious and beautifully kept room that had all the traditional details of a Ryokan. The most amazing thing was waking up in the morning, sliding the wooden doors open and seeing the beautiful greenery of the garden in-front of you. It was a great experience to come back to this Ryokan after full on days of Kyoto city. The area of the Ryokan is quiet, safe and easily accessible by foot to bus stations. Also its walking distance to Imperial Palace/Garden. We had the traditional breakfast one morning and it was delicious and our host was so kind and lovely. Highly recommend trying this Ryokan out as part of your Kyoto experience.
The wifi is not stable at all. But this can be a good thing, if you're looking to switch off. Also the rooms are not sound proof, so at times you can hear your neighbours movement and snoring unfortunately. There is a quiet rule after 9PM which everyone respects.

Very restful decoration that alluded to the history of the neighborhood and yet was fully functional. Lovely Japanese breakfast, tasty and filling. Fantastic tea available in the morning if you remember to ask. We had the ground floor room with two single beds and a nice view into the pocket Japanese garden plus comfortable chairs to rest and relax in the view. Bathroom facilities as one would expect in Japan, high quality. Super quiet at night.
Actually, very little. Access to the Kyoto buses (generally very useful) is not instant (5-10' walk needed). Immediate neighborhood is residential (so not a party place, not masses of ) but the entertainment areas of Kyoto accessible by taxi at reasonable rates.
