Honestly, I was blown away by the place. Definitely deserves a higher score by all accounts! The value for money is 100% there, and even more. The place was tidy and clean, the room was the best I have seen in Japanese ryokan (think they recently renovated). For this value hard-pressed to find anything better! I think some people have an issue with the location (but then, pick a better location :)). Access with a car was great. And for those who are missing out on the dinner (like we), there is a super nice Chinese restaurant a few minutes walk away, run by a local family.. super tasty food! For this value, would easily come back for more. Also liked the breakfast, again for the value.. hard-pressed to beat that!

The building, facilities and staff were great!! No real issues at all, the only "issue" (and this is common to to most ryokans I believe) are the relatively thin walls (can hear more excited kids and groups during some hours). But would not really say this is a fault of the place.

love the food and the room! there are 2 showers in the bath so may get crowded depending on timing but temperature is great. location is quiet and near familymart too!

when nikko gets very crowded with tourists, it may get difficult to board the bus as it is closer to lake chuzenji than nikko terminal where most people board...

We changed dates very last minute and they were accommodating. The room was perfect for me and my husband. All necessities were there. The Japanese breakfast was just amazing! That alone made up for the anything that would fall short. We were not able to use the onsen as we were only there for a night.

The location is a bit remote and it was hard to find the place using the address. I would search on google maps using the name Tokiwa Ryokan and click on directions instead of manually inputting the address.

The couple running the inn were marvelous. Just so sweet, thoughtful and caring. The room, facilities were nice. Have to compliment the amazing food being served by them on request. I was so full but still couldn't stop eating. We missed our bus to the train station early morning and the owners went out of their way to drop us.

The location is easily 30 mins by bus from train station. Because there are no other mode of transports- cabs etc. we had to be reliant on the local bus services.

Tokiwa Ryokan is a very fair priced gem I can very much recommend. The location is good: it can easily be reached by Tobu Bus (Bus Stop 18). From there, you can easily get to both Chuzenji Lake/Yumoto Onsen and the world heritage area. The owners are very friendly, breakfast and dinner (book in advance) are amazing. It is a great place to stay even for foreigners and I can only encourage you to consider it.

The room was clean and we had a good time in Nikko staying here. It is located between the lake and the temple area, about 20min to travel on either sides. The shower area had a small pool, big enough for three comfortably to relax. As there are no food options nearby, you may want to consider having the ryokan meals or have it in the Nikko town area become coming in. There is a Family Mart in the vicinity as well.

Very good Japanese style hotel, combing the Japanese ambience, supreme food, and western style comfort (private bathroom and shower).

It is a bit far from the railway station. You need to take bus and the bus is not frequent. But I think that is why you get great food (dinner and breakfast) at this price level. I still think the good service worth the extra trouble of transportation.

We felt very welcomed when we arrived. The man had enough basic English to explain everything- although my husband speaks Japanese. The hotel was exceptionally clean throughout. Our room was made beautifully. Great selection of toiletries and yukata, robe and towels for the onsen. Breakfast was exceptional! Such a huge Japanese breakfast meal! Nothing really to complain about!

It didn’t bother us at all… but if you like quiet and dark rooms, then be warned that light comes through the shutters and the walls are thin (can hear TV and sneezing from your neighbours!) the pillows are Japanese style, with beans… so if you don’t like that, take your own pillow. - and that I can’t edit my photo uploads to remove two photos that are not part of this property! - the bridge and flowers accidentally attached and I can’t remove them!

Absolutely loved the breakfasts! Just a really relaxed atmosphere, traditional Japanese bathroom (but with own toilet), tatami floors - a great experience. Also on bus route and easy walk to a family Mart for supplies.

Good size of the room, very cleaned and comfortable, very authentic meals

Bad WiFi, pretty far from Nikko train station and restaurants (hard to find something opened after 6pm), Onsen would need a little renovation.
