Great to have unlimited access to the hot pools during our stay. Food in the restaurant was fantastic and the staff were all super friendly and helpful. Loved the character of the hotel.
We had no hot water in the shower the first night but we could see tradies working on site and it was fixed by the next morning. I saw mention of hot water issues in other reviews but I guess plumbing can be an issue in these old buildings.

We enjoyed the unique character of this hotel with it’s past history and and charmingly antique appeal. There is a feeling of faded glory, and the impression that there is a need for lots of revamping but we found the whole experience of being there for a few days very enjoyable. The staff were very congenial and the chef was superb!! We loved the meals he produced. It was fun exploring the hot pools, all very rustic but again uniquely historic. We had planned to do the walk to the blue springs but it is closed at the moment but we did enjoy a short drive to Tirau for coffee and an explore of the shops.
We had an outside double unit for our first few nights which had a few issues. A couple of non functioning lights made things difficult and we had to turn off the noisey fridge during the night. On our 3rd night we had a room in the hotel and we preferred this to the unit outside. However we did find the walls are quite thin. A crying baby next door kept us awake for a while! We were surprised that the hotel doesn’t have an espresso coffee machine. It was disappointing that the gas fire isn’t working. We had nurtured visions of sitting by a warm fire place (even if only gas) in this ancient hotel in the middle of winter!!

Loved the historic hotel. Beautifully decorated for Christmas too. Our room overlooked the golf course and across to the Kaimai mamaku ranges. Beautiful short bush walk down to the hot pools, which we had all to ourselves. Large bar and restaurant with out door seating. Big breakfast room with lots of breakfast choices. Chair and table on the verandah outside our room was a welcome escape from the noisy bar.
The bar got a bit noisy with large groups. Probably Christmas parties at this time of year. Although we loved our bedroom, being very inkeeping with the historic period, the bathroom could do with an update. I did report that the sink taps had movement in them which meant they were difficult to switch off.

We enjoyed the unique historic atmosphere of the hotel which makes it a very special place to visit. The meals were excellent and the staff very genial. The perfect venue for spending time with friends. We stayed in an outside unit for 2x nights and then for our last night moved into the heritage wing which we preferred. The hot pools are rustic and require some decent agility but they are a special experience in themselves
It was disappointing to find the gas fire in the lounge was out of service with no sign of any attempt being made to repair it. Although the Hotel policy does not allow children under 5yrs in the heritage wing because of issues with the sound proofing we found ourselves with a crying baby next door - late into the evening!

Great location, very comfy chalets, breakfast and dinner were great, and the old pub has amazing ambiance. Staff were friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the hot pools
There are a number of small things that let the hotel down, in the chalets at least. The kitchens are poorly equipped. There is no stove or bench top cooker - only a microwave. There are no cooking utensils (not even a bottle opener), and there were only 3 knives. No decent coffee mugs. The spa with the unit was great but no instructions how to use - we had to get in a staff member to help us. The lighting in the living area was also very poor. These are all things that could be very easily improved.

This is a charming old hotel with lots of history and character. The ladies at the restaurant were sweet and friendly and accommodated me with an ice bucket for the room. The dinners at the restaurant were delicious! The mineral pools were awesome- it's a bit of a walk down a lovely path to 3 rustic relaxing hot pools. Take a flashlight if you go down at night!
This sweet old hotel is way over decorated. There is tchotchke everywhere and it seriously distracts from the beauty of this charming place. Every square inch is covered with fake plants and flowers, old statues, and strands of flashing lights. And the music in all of the spaces is loud and annoying. If you are a diabetic, the serve-yourself breakfast won't work for you- there is NOTHING but bread, cereals, and cakes for breakfast. The tables on the deck needed to be replaced or repaired properly, as did the windows. This nice old hotel needs some serious fixing up!

Unique heritage feel of a hotel from the 1900’s with hot springs and a cute 9 hole golf course. Comfortable bed in a double room in wing of hotel with bathroom. Nice campground adjacent to springs.
The facilities are a little tired and need a youthful reinvigoration to bring up to today’s standards. Hot water in showers unreliable, limited hire facilities for golf club which restricts visitors playing options. Quite noisy in hotel corridor and room not soundproof.

I absolutely fell in love with this historic inn! The grounds with stately trees, and dreamy, unadulterated hot springs (open 24/7) were much to my liking. My excellent surf and turf dinner consisting of a sirloin steak, prawns and mussels would have been two or even three times as expensive in a fancy restaurant and my complementary breakfast had a wide choice of tasty pastries. The free hot springs, complementary breakfast and reasonably priced on site dinner venue made this hotel a hidden gem, would have easily been triple this in USA. This place was an excellent complement to our Hobbiton tour, 20 minute drive away. Stay here, this inn deserves to be preserved!
Nothing, perfect.

Loved the space of the unit and the meal we had at the restaurant was delicious. The room it's self was a little dated but fine for the night. Very comfy beds. The included use of the hot springs was amazing and just what we needed.
The bathroom let the place down. Moldy silicone around the shower over bath, and the shower head had very little water flow or pressure. I also closed the curtain in one bedroom and the previous guests used underwear was under it.

Love the room setting that made us feel very homely with lots of characters and all supplies we need the moment we're in. The Christmas decorations were really lovely around at the time. The area is very green, lovely and quiet with lots of old trees, and there's a trampoline and tennis and golf course for kids. Specially, the hot spring pools right next to the river are amazing, the feel of so close to nature in natural hot pools is just exceptional and unforgettable.
Wifi is not the best, no restaurant around but the property's own restaurant is good and reasonable priced with bar and pool tables.
