A true Japanese experience, with marvelous breakfast and dinner. Enough food to satisfy a Sumo wrestler. Brilliant !! Fantastic Onsen ... Really big with panoramic windows looking out over the slopes. The staff speak very little English, but they will go out of their way to ensure you have the best experience possible. I think I was the only non-Japanese person staying there and I really enjoyed my week at Iwasuge. There was a booking.com mistake in that I booked a twin room with single occupancy, but got charged for dual occupancy. Iwasuge noticed this, contacted me, and the difference was refunded. If they had not of done this, I would never have been aware of the mistake. Thank you so much for your integrity. Local bus stop is only a short walking distance away, but a little steep and slippery, so Iwasuge's pick up and drop is is really appreciated. Conversely, if you mis-time the last lifts to get back, the local bus shuttle will get you there (Hoppo Onsen bus stop) and then a 100m walk, and you are home easily in any case. I booked the mountain view room and was really glad that I treated myself to this bit of extra luxury. Yes, I will certainly be looking forward to staying at Iwasuge on my next trip to Shiga Kogen.
Just a "heads up" in that it is not truely "ski-out ski-in". Yes, you can ski out to the gondola station, but that opens a little later than other lifts, and maybe not at all if it's snowing heavily or it's windy. To get to other lifts, such as bottom of Giant, you'll need a 100m walk before being able to ski. And you will definitely have a 100m walk at the end of the day to get back to Iwasuge.

The staff were all incredibly friendly and helpful. Going above and beyond to assist us. It is very well situated to the gondola heading up the mountain!
The property is a bit challenging to reach through public transport as there is only certain buses that go to the area.

Great location, friendly staff, clean spacious rooms with beautiful view, delicious food that they catered for our vegetarian needs (and definitely could have done vegan as well). The hotel is right next to two ski gondolas which makes it perfect to take advantage of the ski resort no matter your skill level.
Sometimes the staff would bring the hot food for breakfast a bit too early and while i was waiting for my husband to arrive the food got cold. But it was not such a big deal. They don’t rent snowboard gear, the closest shop that does is a 10 minute bus ride away. We rented in Yudanaka.

An amazing place to stay in the heart of Shiga Kogen. We LOVED Hotel Iwasuge and the people who run it. We were greeted in warm and friendly manner and that set the tone for the entire stay. The location is AMAZING, the food is AWESOME, the rooms are WONDERFUL, the onsen/spa is GREAT for your sore ski muscles. I was genuinely sad to leave here and miss seeing the lovely staff who helped us on a daily basis. I wouldnt hesitate to recommend Iwasuge to anyone who is after a genuine, friendly 'taste of Japan' place to stay in Shiga Kogen - you wont be disappointed.
I had no problem with it - actually I loved feeling like we were in Japan - but there was no shower in the room. So if you are not going to like using the communal space then its something to consider - but you will be missing out on something special - the view from the onsen as the sun is setting is spectacular! My advice - don't hesitate go to Hotel Iwasuge!

The staff is absolutely fantastic! They doesn’t speak English but whit google translate, hands and feet we became really far. They helped us with planning our trip back to Nagano. In case you need help for information about the bus etc. go to the reception! They even brought us to the bus stop in heavy snow! The food is delicious! Super Japanese which gave us a traditional feeling. We also booked the typical Japanese room, do it for the experience (not for the comfort…) After a long day of skiing and cold the hot water spring is so nice and warm! Our best Japanese experience we had here and we will definitely come back!

Helpful and kind staff. Prime location next to the higashideyama Gondola lift. Reception staff went out of their way to ensure we got the right express bus to Nagano giving us a lift to the bis station. The onsen is also very nice and clean.

Big, comfy room, nice hot onsen bath & delicious food. Friendly, accommodative staff.
No ski rental shop nearby & terrible town shuttle schedule. The closest bus stop is not a frequent stop.
