The service here comes from the heart - not from a rule book! At the check-in we were comfortably seated at a nice long counter table with a beautiful view onto the river and served a refreshing local citrus drink. There are late breakfast and check-out times, even offering a brunch, so the morning after is way more relaxed than at usual ryokans. I also loved the solid Sabi Ishi stone reception area, very simple, but neat and clean. The little shop too was laid out simply in a straight line with goods that one actually likes to have. And I liked the 'slippers' which were stylish looking and had a good tight fit on the feet. I could walk up the stairs without worrying that they would dangerously slip of my feet, which is what usually happens in some ryokans with plastic slippers.

The little wall behind the bed was acting as head board, but it would have been more comfortable with a second pillow to cushion ourselves when sitting up against it. Also the Yukata patterns could be a bit more updated...

We stayed a room with a private Onsen (hot spring) named after one of the great writers in Japanese literature. The room has lots of space with minimalist decor yet well-equipped aesthetic amenities. Quiet and peaceful atmosphere and nice view. It was a hidden gem.

It was expensive but worth spending.

Outstanding quality of service. We took the dîner and breakfast: it was amazing ! And even if it kaseiki they include some rice so you will have more than enough. Private bubble bath are great, the public bath too. And the bath in room was a nice touch

It's expensive but you have to do it at least once in your life if you can.

It was a great mini break and relax time after 8 days of walking, and prior continuing our trip. Once you get there by taxi (or your rental car), they will sit you down in the lobby and offer some tea or coffee. There they will tell you when it's your dinner (you have 2 slots, either 17:30 or 20:30 I think) and when would you like to have breakfast (you have multiple slots available). They will offer you the big onsen to choose the time slot since it's included in the price. They also offer the shuttle bus to Yugawara station on your check-out day. The private onsen we had in the room is really big. You can comfortably sit in there, more than 2 persons. The dinner is 2 hours long. Really fancy, make sure to wear the kimono you get at the lobby! :)

If you want to know something more about you reservation or how to book the bigger onsen or if they offer shuttle bus services, don't event try to get in contact with them prior your arrival because they will not answer. I tried calling them, sent emails, booking tried to contact them - but nothing. Not sure if it's because of their luck of English or they just don't care. We had a room with a private onsen, but the terrace was all broken up and it was not safe to walk on that wooden floor. Remote location so you will need to call taxi to get to the location (we ended up paying around 25eur for a 10min drive).
