The room was fantastic, not just in terms of décor but also size and design: lots of plugs, right where they should be (except bathroom but that's a British thing), good towels, good lighting and mirrors, good iron, good desk, Nespresso, free water bottles and cookies...). However, the breakfast was awful, I'd signed up for three mornings and returned two. They do have a great coffee house on the ground floor though.

The breakfast. Buffet was not appetizing (very sad fruit). Eggs Benedict had some sort of cold ham instead of cooked bacon and lots of a very greasy sauce. Bad coffee (better at the coffee shop downstairs). I actually got sick.

Central location, very well converted former council offices. Room very good but see a few niggles below. Bed very comfortable. Breakfast excellent, good choices & service every morning. Stunning 'rotunda' room.

Minor niggles with the room (418). Very cold weather when we arrived, didn't initially realise that the only heating in the bathroom was the electric towel rail which hadn't been switched on. Eventually found switch on our first morning. No info on this or where switch for closing blinds on upper windows was. Despite lots of separate lights, no ceiling light so very gloomy. Lumpy pillows. None of the above detracted from a very good stay.

The staff were all very friendly and given that the hotel is an old building they have done their best to ensure that it is warm and comfortable although the heating in our room did need to be tweeked to make it less airy. I liked that people cannot just walk off the street and into the main sleeping accommodation without a security card. The breakfasts were more than ample. The bathroom was clean and the shower was the best I hae ever experience with both the side sprinklers and overhead. The hotel is just a few steps from the town and river walks and an easy walk from the Railway station.

Although the breakfast choices were good the cooked choices always seemed to be overcooked in some way; hard bacon; hard boiled rather than runny eggs; overcooked poached eggs. Bed area could have been kept better with a more thorough hoover/dust and certainly under the beds and making the bed properly would be batter than just pulling the duvert across and not touching the under sheet.

The building is stunning as it’s a grade ll listed building I loved the architecture of it and the windows and other items in the hotel that have remained there for years. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the beds are comfortable. Very close to the centre and easy to get to.

The room we stayed in was an awkward shape as you walked into room (322)you walked into the toilet area before your room due to the shape. So bad layout also room looked tired in places walls needed re filling and painting as large crack down the wall and the full room was quite dark and dingy. Beds were comfortable and staff were lovely. Breakfast buffet wasn’t the best setup tables too close with the continental breakfasts on as it was difficult to get passed if someone was stood there choosing their selection. Cooked breakfast was brought out to you and that too wasn’t very nice either cheap sausages and black pudding, very large greasy mushroom plus asked for a poached egg and that reassembled a boiled egg.

Gorgeous hotel, really loved our stay here. Beds were extremely comfortable, the room was big with large bathroom. The decor was gorgeous. Felt so relaxed and cosy. Everything was spotless! The restaurant was amazing and would 100% recommend booking a table if staying for the night. Loved how they kept so many original features of the old Court house. Lovely little bar too! Location couldn’t have been better - literately 5 mins into the town centre.

Only small thing is the first night we had a noisy room next to the hotel extractor fans but the staff were amazing and moved us to a different room the next night.

Upgraded to a room with a view - not disappointed. Really interesting historic building converted into a hotel while retaining its original character.

Very very little to fault. You need to arrive early, however, to secure a spot in their carpark, and the price of the parking is not included - because they can't guarantee a free spot. Once we parked up we left the car in the carpark as the old city is just five minutes walk. Breakfast was mostly excellent (great choice and quantity), but the omelette we ordered one morning was inedible as it was overcooked. Hopefully this was just the work of an unsupervised trainee and not the regular chef.

Built in the late 1800s, the property is architecturally exotic. It has been very well adapted for its present use while retaining its historical features. The room was spacious and extremely comfortable while also being interesting. Breakfast was a delight. The staff were very friendly and most obliging. Nothing was too much trouble. The location is great - a short distance from the shopping centre and a variety of coffee shops, cafes and restaurants and the start of the route up the hill to the cathedral and the castle.

It was a long way to Reception and the restaurant respectively and the route can be confusing. The elevators are zoned to give access to certain areas only so you need to select the right elevator to access your room. But I guess that is a small price to pay for accommodation in such an interesting building.

The room was really comfortable (great bed and an even better shower!) and controllable air conditioning which was much needed in summer! The staff on reception were really helpful and friendly too, and the restaurant for breakfast (old council chamber) was a great way to start each day. Overall I had a really enjoyable stay.

The specific room I was allocated was up on the top floor and didn’t have any windows - it just had two skylights; one very high above the bed and the other one a little bit lower. It wasn’t possible to reach the very high skylight, and I had to stand on a chair to open the blind on the other one to try to get some natural light into the room, and this meant the room was quite dark. This wasn’t a massive issue - I was out most of the day - but it was a little bit of a shame not to have any sort of window/view and to have to stand on a chair to get a bit of natural light/air into the room. (It would be great to have electronic blinds and a remote).

Great location in a historic building, the old Durham city town hall is the home of the hotel. Sounded by victorian architecture, beautiful tiles and stained glass. The hotel is safe and secure with off street paid parking as well as paid street parking, £10 a day. Lovely room with contemporary decor and comfortable bed. There was one oddity, a speaker in the ensuite that the tv played through. So initially our tv audio was muffled, confused by the fact the sound wasn’t coming from the direction of the TV i investigated. Once I opened the door to the ensuite and was hit with clear audio for the tv I stood bemused as to why there was a speaker in the bathroom. Before id switched on the tv and while exploring the room I had noticed a dimmer switch in the bathroom, that at the time didn’t do anything, later discovering it was the volume for the random speaker in the bathroom. Breakfast was to order with continental buffet available, all the food was of good quality. The bar and restaurant were located in the debating chamber of the old city hall. Really nice use of space by the hotel. I would stay again.

The random speaker in the bathroom, that took a while to discover and mute. as well as the slight clutter of memorabilia and trinkets on display in the room. particularly a chest at the foot of the bed that i probably fell over about 5 times.
