Pleasantly surprised! I needed to get somewhere near Tarbert and everything was booked up so chose the Grey Gull despite not having the best reviews. Don't be put off by them as this is a hidden gem. It's a beautiful old building with a bit of history and has a fantastic character and atmosphere. It may need a bit of work here and there, but it's rather modern inside. I loved my room at way at the top. It was quiet, clean and very comfortable. Despite being next to the road, the window was really sound proofed. Watching the moon rise and sunrise was amazing. I also had dinner there which was delicious and treated exceptionally well by the staff. Staff were helpful, friendly and welcoming.Definitely recommend.
Nothing I didn't like.

I liked the restaurant which was very modern, clean, well stocked bar, very attentive, polite and courteous. The staff go above and beyond. They are all very nice! Without a doubt the staff are the best asset of this hotel. The breakfast which was included in the price was very good.
The room we had was a little small to be a double room but we managed as we were out for most of our stay. The bathroom in this room is a bit tight. I know from the literature that the owners of the property are aware of the few issues so that’s fair enough and understandable in a property of this age. There are a few issues with tired decor here and there but it wouldn’t take much to put it right.

Big old building (with no lift) right on the roadside looking up the Loch, really lovely spot. Had a family room with a view. Double bed was lovely, however the single is worn out and needs upgrading. Bathroom was good, despite water pressure issues. Plenty of parking. Food was really surprisingly good, especially the fish pizza and chicken cordon bleu.
No staff in reception and no signage either. Eventually went to bar and was checked in. The bar staff were the only people we saw the whole time and it seemed they didn't have the answers or know how for some things. Asked to change single bed but the buck was passed without anyone doing anything. Asked for a fan, but bar man guested there wasn't one. Perceived lack of management left to a feeling of lack of safety and security (esp pver night or in an emergency?!).

Room was beautiful and spotlessly clean, the views from restaurant were gorgeous, the staff were lovely and helpful and hotel is dog friendly, breakfast was lovely, although the young boy on restaurant duty on the Sunday morning could have been doing with some help, running around trying to please everyone, but done a good job.
Went to restaurant on Saturday night, ordered the steak pie, the meat was really cold, and I think the pastry was a leftover from night before, when I told them they offered to reheat it for me ,which I refused as hate reheated food, still paid full price and went to bed hungry. Husband said fish was lovely.

The rooms and bathroom were spotless and the beds were comfy. The breakfast is good value for a tenner each (wish it had lorne sausage though!). The staff were all very friendly, helpful and attentive. The hotel has plenty of parking and perfectly located for touring about the Argyll area. They also had a tribute evening on over the time we stayed - we had an early start home the next day so didn't attend but it honestly looked like good fun! The hotel must have good soundproofing too as we couldn't hear the event at all from our room
The shower in our room wasn't the best, weak pressure and we needed to run it for 15 solid minutes for it to reach a lukewarm temperature (still it sufficed for a short stay) and the toilet took forever to refill between flushes- which is probably related to the water shower pressure issue.

We enjoyed our stay at The Grey Gull, the hotel was quiet and the staff were lovely. When we arrived we got straight in the hot tub before the rain started! It was clean and the views were fab across the loch. Our room was big, with a loch view and bath in the window. The bed had plenty of pillows and the TV was decent. We modified one of the breakfast choices slightly to be vegetarian and that was fine with the staff, hollandaise sauce was amazing and plenty of it! Would definitely recommend for a wee night away.
The WiFi wasn't amazing but it is an old building with thick walls.

The staff here are truly amazing! They made our long weekend superb for sure. They went above and beyond for us during our stay! I really cant commend them highly enough. So friendly and attentive. They were a really great team of waiting/bar/breakfast and reception staff, and they were all so hard-working and friendly. They are ALL a credit to the Hotel. There was one young chap (didn't get his name sadly) but he was on duty all 3 of the evenings we had dinner and drinks in the hotel lounge and even though as the weekend progressed the restaurant and lounge got busier, he was still as equally cheery, attentive and helpful to all patrons and professional in his role. All the waiting staff were. I think they give the hotel a great name as good customer service is just so important in hospitality - and this team have it in droves. They are a credit to the hotel. My hope is the management look after them well as good staff are very hard to find/retain in this current climate, and that staff rightly keep all their tips is important in this role. So my hope is that they are paid well & fairly As for the food, it was fantastic. The breakfasts were plentiful and tasty, and the evening meals were outstanding, full marks to chef! From scallops to the delicious steak pie the quality of produce was just great and portions more than ample. Our room was immaculate and the beds were really comfortable and cosy too, with a perfect view. It was also a large room we had booked and it was just perfect our requirements with a very large dog - who they could not have made more welcome or be more accommodating with. That in itself was very much appreciated and enabled us to relax in the evening - especially as the staff kindly reserved us a table in the lounge area big enough to accommodate us all for dinner each evening. All round TOP marks. The Grey Gull Hotel is in a lovely location with the most outstanding staff. Cant wait to return!

It was so quiet, peaceful, excellent breakfast, staff very helpful. It sits back from the main road south, yet there was very little road noise. Id deffo stay there again. Large spacious room with great view of the sea loch. Directly across the road there's a monument to a local man who became a missionary & sadly was killed in New Guinea. In the 1800s . Just a wee bit of local history.
Leaving. ,we stayed only the one night, it broke the long drive into easy stages. The Wi-Fi was a bit weak but that is surely not a priority for most people,. especially when they have access to such wonderful scenery.

Given mixed reviews, I was pleasantly surprised, staff really friendly and helpful. When I arrived the heating did not appear to be on but reception immediately resolved this and even let me decide whst temperature I wanted. Room was clean and comfortable, although carpet was a wee bit worn. Bathroom seemed fairly new and very clean. Ate dinner there and good quality food, super quick service. Breakfast also super quick and delicious. Room was at top, very quiet, slept well, bed comfy.
Only criticism would be you provide coffee etc in rooms but in my room no teaspoon. Nothing major, obviously an oversight.

Ahhh, everything was just perfect for our weekend away! Great location, free car park, helpful staff, delicious dinner, nice views from the hot tub (included in our room price) and the bedroom window, full Scottish breakfast, really made our stay perfect! When we just arrived we found it difficult to get to the shower as the corner with the shower door was very narrow. We asked staff at the reception for a wee help and the very nice girl changed rooms with no time. We received much bigger with a big bath in the bedroom room and were very pleased with the upgrade. 👍 Advice for your dinner,to choose the mussel dish with white wine sauce ,oh,that was incredible! ❤️ Never tasted better sauce in all my life!!! I will definitely come back here 😉
Everything was just perfect ❤️
