We liked the location, in the center of the town, with good parking at the hotel. The staff were excellent from the check in to the cleaners, nice bar with reasonable prices, and the restaurant was really good. Although the building was getting a little tired cleanliness and service were both excellent.
Our only dislikes were the breakfast, could have been better, and our bathroom was not of an acceptable standard, the bath was in an awful state, really needing replaced, the hotel itself was a little tired, but is kept to a reasonable standard.

Our room was very spacious with a cute seating area with comfy chairs and a coffee table in front of a bay window. We had a view of the charming street below and the abbey ruins in the distance. We liked the long bathtub and ability to open windows for a breeze. The decor was traditional and tasteful, with coffee/tea/biscuits available. We enjoyed the full Scottish breakfast and our server was very friendly and helpful in explaining the food to us (our first time with haggis, black pudding, etc.). The pub was newly renovated and my husband enjoyed having a pint there while watching football. The location is excellent for exploring the local businesses, Harmony Garden, abbey, restaurants, and access to the start of St. Cuthbert's Way, which we walked starting the next morning.
When we arrived there was no one at the desk, so we followed the sign and fetched a person from the pub to check us in. She wasn't very friendly or welcoming, but the rest of our stay was lovely. Decor was a little outdated/traditional, but it felt charming all the same.

Car park a big help, if not a bit congested but managed to get in. staff good and helpful, dinner was very good. Room clean and bright, whole building (though a bit dated) was also clean and very pleasant. Have stayed there before and would not hesitate to stay again.
Breakfast was slow to arrive but must have been cooked fresh to order, not the best but not the worst I have had, (black pudding needs changing), tea and coffee came out of a flask which did not appear very appealing. Breakfast a bit limited to those who did not want a full Scottish.

Good breakfast. The coffee could certainly be improved with a richer tasting bean. Good for strength though. Lorne Sausage very good. Friendly relaxed staff. It was more like staying in a friend's home than a hotel.
The only problem was that in our room No 4 on 1st floor, the wall between us and 5(?) - the one to the right as you went into the room, was very thin; it looked as though a bigger room had been partitioned to make these two rooms. A man came to the room at about 3am and he and his partner then appeared to have an argument. This went on for some time; having been wakened by this, it took some time to get back to sleep again. I suggest some sound proofing is added to the wall on either side and maybe the beds rotated so that the heads are to the wall opposite.

From the moment we arrived, Cheryl and the rest of the friendly staff made us very welcome and were so attentive during our stay. The choice of food for our evening meal was varied with the portions and quality superb, especially the apple crumble with custard! When were checking out, it was before the normal breakfast start time, however, staff came in early to serve us our breakfast, a lovely gesture and so typical of them.
Soundproofing between rooms poor.

A lovely, well run hotel right in the heart of Melrose. The staff were great, nothing too much bother for them. Rooms comfortable and clean! Parking (with motorbikes) was a concern for us, but ample room here, and everything was safe. The food was good too, breakfast choices were perfect and dinner at the bar on our first night was delicious, (we ate in other places around town too during our stay)...... we were there midweek for a 'chill out' break, and that's exactly what we got! As a bonus, the weather was glorious. We would definitely stay here again if in the area.
Nothing, all was good!

Lovely hotel, very friendly and helpful staff. ate in the restaurant, nice food, breakfast was very good. perfect for my needs. Hotel very accommodating in allowing me to leave my car in the car park for a week as I was doing The St Cuthburts Way walk. Would have stayed there again but full due to Borders Literary festival, Great event for the area.
Bathroom could have done with modernisation, but more than adequate and full of character.

Good quality hotel in the heart of Melrose where the added bonus of the hotel's private car park is such a relief in a busy tourist area. Staff were friendly and helpful but I have to add bonus points to the staff member in charge of breakfast who was so cheerful, efficient and helpful. She is an asset to the company.
I had a great room to the front of the hotel and was able to watch the activity of the busy main street. I hasten to add it was very quiet at night. My only gripe was I didnt have an armchair in the room so had to use the bed to sit, not so comfortable as a seat would have been. I'm sure, however, one would have been provided if at the time I had thought to ask!

Central location and very helpful staff. Food was good and facilities fine. Wonderful old building with a lot of fascinating history and charecter,. Private parking very helpful in a busy town.
Hotel is an old property and needs some investment to make it a first class accommodation.
