Lovely helpful staff took good care of me, were fun to talk to and gave me a cuppa while I waited for my taxi as it was a very cold day - 1 staff member even offered to drive me back to the station if I had any issues getting through to a taxi company, for which I was extremely grateful. Lively and welcoming atmosphere with friendly regulars who made me feel at home, invited me into their conversations and even gave me some (much needed) blister plasters. Evening meal (veggie curry) and breakfast (with veggie "haggis") were both hearty and delicious, as was the cider. Very cosy room in great condition (which perfectly matched the online photos), comfy bed and stunning views from the bedroom window. Can't wait to go back when I'm next in the area!

No mobile phone signal (which isn't their fault as it's just a remote area), but they very kindly allowed me to use their landline to call the taxi company.

This is the most friendly place you can imagine, the staff are are welcoming and obviously enjoy their jobs. It has just been taken over by a new owner, a Canadian gentleman, who took time to tell us about his surprising history with this pub. It's safe to say that it's in good hands. We were there mid week for 3 nights and slept exceptionally well in our comfortable bed which was actually in The Screes across the road (the 2 pubs are operated as one business). The shower was hot and powerful, ideal after a long day. We ate in the pub each evening and the freshly cooked food was excellent, VIcki certainly makes a great pie. The micro brewery behind The Strands turns out a range of beers which are served on draught, something for every palette, so that's another base covered. We had a packed lunch on one of our days which was very good and good value too. Food is only served in The Strands at the moment and if you want to eat there in the evening you definitely need to book. Breakfast is served in The Strands and is of lovely quality, each cooked freshly and there is pretty much everything that you could want. Nether Wasdale itself is a one road affair with a few houses , the 2 pubs, a church and a well run campsite so you are guaranteed a quiet night of undisturbed sleep. We will return next year for some more walking in the area and look forward to seeing how the new owner has begun to update and preserve what is already a cracking place.

After a day in the hills the whole vibe of here was fantastic. The great local beers, food and relaxed atmosphere make for a lovely evening. The pub is so busy with food make sure you book a table as they are full very quickly. The food was great and I recommend the steak and ale pie with a few pints of their own beers. The staff and owner are so helpful and the locals are very friendly. A great night in a traditional pub. My room was in the Scree pub opposite which was really quiet and peaceful. Breakfast was lovely back in the main pub. Will certainly stay here again.

such a great stay!! it was the cheapest stay on booking.com so i was a bit nervous at first but honestly it was perfect and amazing value for money! the room was really rustic and cute and the bathroom was in great condition, the owners were really lovely and were really attentive. the breakfast was really good too!! was just a good classic full breakfast but i was really surprised to see they did veggie and vegan options too :) i’m only giving a lower rating than 10 as we didn’t try any of the lunch or evening food unfortunately so i can’t give it a good rating. but all in all it was a lovely little inn!!!

can’t really think of anything negative :)

Had a gorgeous stay here for the night, staff were so lovely and welcoming and the room was huge and so so comfortable. The bar has an exceptional and extensive selection of spirits and wonderful beers produced here. Highly recommend the "Ermmm" for when you can't decide! The food was delicious and there was some lovely choices including some decent veggie options. Breakfast was also lovely. Highly recommend and will definitely be back soon on our next trip to the lakes. Location is beautiful and so quiet which made for lovely relaxing stay.

Location was great, we specifically booked to climb Scafell and it was a 15 min drive to the car park, driving past the beautiful lake. Breakfast was included but this was a little disappointing as it didn't come with what the menu suggested and we were given toast no butter. Little things, not a major issue. Our dinner was outstanding, best food I've had for a long time, so thank you.

As mentioned above, breakfast could have been better but really not a big issue and certainly didn't spoil our trip.

Poor planning on my half meant I was running exceptionally late on my way to the hotel, I phoned ahead to ask about reserving a table for dinner but my arrival time would have been after the kitchen closed. The team were kind enough to take an advanced order over the phone and keep it warm for my arrival. When I arrived, exceedingly late, the kitchen was still busy and my order and that of my friend's was prepared fresh for us. The team's dedication to ensuring everyone is welcome and catered for really cemented the brilliant atmosphere. We stayed for two nights, eating at the Screes Inn both times and the food was brilliantly prepared, and arrived in a timely manner and was well presented. The same goes for the breakfasts which were superbly portioned and well cooked with quality ingredients (the sausages were incredible both on the breakfast, in the greedy pig burger and with mash and veg). We tried our hardest to try all the beers on draught and of the six we enjoyed there wasn't a dud in the set. Fantastic! My friend and I had booked as we wanted to climb Scafell that weekend and the Inn was a perfect base to stay at. The twin room was spacious enough for two friends with a clean and functional bathroom and two comfortable and warm beds.

A little more water pressure in the shower? Possibly a warmer restaurant area? The back room wasn't brilliantly warm but with a jumper on it was fine. I'm splitting hairs really. Very little to moan about, everything was exactly as described online and more so!

There was an excellent choice of main meals on the menu all priced to provide excellent value. The bar offered several beers which were brewed by its own micro brewery, The location is a little bit off the beaten track for my purpose, but ideal for people visiting the lakes or hill walkers and ramblers. If I was to visit this area again, this venue would be my first choice, especially given the peace and tranquility of the surroundings. The premises are very clean and hygienic, and the staff are very friendly.

Nothing really springs to mind. If there were any problems they weren't worth mentioning. Travelling to and from the accommodation is advised during daylight hours, as several miles involve country lanes, and although signposted, the signs are not highly visible after dark.

Food, drinks and staff were all really good. The rooms are still desperately in need of refurbishment. That said, the new owners have immediately replaced all the bedding with top notch, great quality stuff. I can’t think of a better night’s sleep! We still had an incredible time as we always do and have booked again already for next year!

The bedrooms need modernising and some dog friendly rooms would be amazing.
