As well as looking impressive in the front from the street, the communal area and stair-well of this hotel building have the "wow" factor that is so good to see in an older hotel. The decor is beautiful, and well cared for. We had a "superior" room, which was spacious, warm and with two windows. The large bathroom had a bath and separate shower. The bed was large and extremely comfortable. Breakfast in the morning was cooked to order - so much better than lukewarm buffet food. The location is perfect for anyone going to, or (as we were) coming back from, France on Brittany Ferries. The staff could not have been more helpful and friendly. I absolutely loved, and totally approved of, the folded information sheet that doubled up as the wallet for the door key card. All hotels should follow suit!!
We suggested when we left that it would be a good idea to place a small shelf in the shower cubicle, rather than expect people to have to bend down to pick the shower gel dispenser up from the floor. Whilst the hotel building at the front looks the part, it is in need of a bit more attention at the back on the outside, and the pathway from the car park to the back door is rather basic - but I am sure these are works in progress.

The guest was my 84 year old father staying on his own who has mobility issues. He said the food in the restaurant was lovely and the staff were really friendly. Hotel was in a good location
No bedside table next to the bed which is inconvenient as nowhere to put a glass of water or glasses at night which could be dangerous during the night if you can't see properly. Also a rail in the shower would be useful. Dad's room wasn't cleaned one day and when he queried it was told the staff had left for the day.

A beautiful, authentic hotel. It was a wonderfully wholesome stay. I visited with my two young sons and they had the best time. They want to make it our new Christmas tradition. The breakfast was really good. The bed was super comfortable and the room warm.
The carpark is small but thankfully there is on street parking right by the hotel. £16 for 24 hours. There would be more spaces available if people stuck to the parking spaces. I unfortunately had to park on the street despite there being 3 spaces left due to people not parking in the lines. This is of course no fault of the hotel.

Loved the warmth, elegance and comfort of the hotel. The staff were knowledgeable, caring and efficient. Fascinated to hear the history and links to the Titanic. Food at breakfast & dinner was delicious, as was the buffet spread for my relatives funeral. Extremely good value for money.
Our room has very dirty windows.inside & out. They were.really yuck. Room 204. Otherwise, our stay was excellent. It might not be an ultra modern but bland hotel. But for us, it captured a byegone age. Luxe chandeliers, sweeping grand staircase ( lifts available) and oil paintings. Maybe a bit tired in places, but warm, comfortable, clean and cosy. Excellent food, great stay.

Comfortable bed. Great breakfast and location ideal for our needs.
The shower, it took a while for the hot water to come through and when it did it got very hot but to turn on or adjust the cold water you had to reach under the water which was not ideal. I appreciate it's an old building with traditional sash windows that do let the draft in, but on arrival, our room was freezing cold. Not sure of the problem as a receptionist said the heating is on a timer? But also heard there was air in the system, so I was unsure what the problem actually was!! Come the morning our room was warm, too warm for me lol

The hotel is beautiful and reminiscent of a bygone era. The room was well kept and clean. I booked breakfast every morning which was lovely. It really does feel special to stay in such elegant accommodation and the staff are cheerful and attentive. You need to spend a little time figuring out on street parking (the hotel car park is often full), but I never had any problem finding parking.
The bathroom could do with being updated. The basin tap was leaking, and the extractor fan was not working, so I used a towel over the door to let in fresh air and deal with the very slightly damp smell (not a huge issue). A more detailed description of where to park and how it works would be enormously helpful for people like me who are easily confused by parking issues.

We booked this because we were attending a show in Plymouth Pavilions and wanted to make a night of it. Beautiful old hotel, we had a room with a sea view which made it even more special. We paid to be half board and the evening meal was excellent. Staff were just the right amount of friendly. Breakfast was basic but good, options were up to 8 items from the full English list with toast so you could do eggs on toast etc if full English is too much. Also croissants and pan au Chocolat, yogurt, fruit and cereal etc. This was a lovely night's getaway for my partner and I and definitely so where we would consider again.

Good location close to the city centre and the Hoe. Very grand building and comfortable room. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was good (but see comment below) and the staff very attentive and friendly. Useful having the car park although space is limited when the hotel is busy (we had to park on the street on a meter one night).
Whilst the breakfast was good, it could be improved by providing a better selection of fruit and muesli (not in a packet) and plain yoghurt (there seemed to be a lot of toffee-flavoured yoghurt!). The pillows were rather thin and hard. The rear exterior of the hotel is a bit dilapidated.

We are seasoned travellers to this beautiful Hotel, and have been staying here since 2012. We absolutely adore it! We have stayed in various rooms including pretty twin rooms, and double rooms with vintage furniture such as a carved sleigh bed, with a lounge seating area adjacent. Our absolute favourite though is The Tower! It is in a turret that stands above the main hotel, and it has three floors. The top two floors having 360⁰ views of Plymouth. In the very top floor are chairs and a circular table where you can sit and relax and enjoy panoramic views out to sea over Plymouth Sound, and watch the ships, ferries and pleasure craft sailing in and out. There are adorable Victorian binoculars to view the area and over to Drakes Island out at sea. Another favourite feature of mine is the glass desk in the first floor bedroom with an ergonomic, leather desk chair. The bed is extremely comfortable and it is quiet so you get a great night's sleep. The theme of the Tower is nautical and there are old ledger books on the second floor that make you feel as if you're a Sea Captain gazing out of your own lighthouse!! All the rooms we've stayed in have baths to lie and pamper yourself in. The Tower has a truly special roll top bath. There are showers also. The main part of the Hotel is simply luxurious. It is like stepping back in time!! Breakfast can be collected and taken to your room. We have ours in the top of the Tower. I particularly love the little stick of fried bread I get with my Vegetarian full English. Room service is available for other meals. The bar with its leather Chesterfield sofas is beautiful, and the drinks are chilled to perfection and always fresh. We had the misfortune to be staying during the riots in Plymouth when all the shops, pubs and restaurants closed early! The bar man told us they had trained for such an event but had never before had to use that training! They locked down the Hotel and assured us they would keep us safe.
If I must grizzle a little, it would be nice to have other hot breakfast items on offer, such as salmon and scrambled eggs. There is a beautiful array of buffet items, from fresh fruit to yoghurt and pastries, but the hot choice is very limited being only a full English or vegetarian full English.

All food was very good for both breakfast and evening meals. The room was a decent size for a couple. The hotel was central for the city centre and sea front facilities. Staff were very nice and polite / friendly at all times.
Unfortunately the room let the stay down, the sink in the bathroom was cracked although functional, the bath was starting to lose its laminate. Windows needed cleaning outside for view into the city, one pane had a crack and single glazing made it possible to hear the boy racers going roundabout to roundabout. The door to the room was poorly fitted and rattled all night, the bed was hard and the pillows very poor.
