Fantastic location and very interesting hotel! It has a gothic theme and this is reflected in the architecture and decor. The staff are great. Some nice views of Union Square from the rooms. The theatre inside the hotel is also excellent. It's a great hotel for solo travellers - I like the nice little touches, such as offering a complimentary glass of sherry every evening and phoning me after arrival to ask if I needed anything. The rooms are good - no air conditioning but a large ceiling fan is provided. No kettle for tea, but they provided one quickly as soon as I asked. The carved stone at the entrance is both stately and spectacular - and makes you realise, as you are entering, that you are in for no ordinary experience. Overall, it's a fantastic friendly hotel that is full of character - recommended!

No breakfast provided (other than a cup of tea/coffee and a biscuit). It's a great hotel, and as such it should offer a great breakfast. There is a cafe very near, but it is very small and basic; however, there is a nice restaurant nearby where you can get a good breakfast - on Ellis Street at the Hotel Fusion.

The location is perfect, right next to Union square, the room was spacious, lots of storage space, all the necessary appliences, big and comfy bed, we had a very nice one week stay. We really enjoyed the vibe and authenticity of this hotel, would come back for sure.

It's common not to serve breakfast in SF, although there was coffee and cookies, which was nice. It would be great to have a decaf option though. The hotel is old and so is the elevator, you should be ready to give it a few minutes wait until it arrives to your floor. Could be annoying if you're in a rush, but it also has its charm.

Loved everything about this century old SF hotel, from it's old school charm to staff attention to detail and service! We were given adjoining rooms with our sons in a cozy alcove. Complimentary glass of sherry in the evening was a nice touch. We walked to Union Square, Chinatown and restaurants. There is a cute little theatre in the hotel that puts on plays. Most of the big chains were in the midst of union disputes. Relentless garbage can banging and megaphone chanting was going on outside those hotels, but not happening at our little boutique Kensington Park hotel.

Not the hotel's fault, but be careful what areas you go to, especially at night. San Francisco’s once-trendy downtown area has descended into a drug-addled hellscape. We rented ebikes and rode right into a sea of ranting vagrants and addicts tweaking, or lying in their own feces. I pray the new mayor fixes this.

This is the third time I've been in San Francisco and I would now never stay anywhere else in the city. Everything here was perfect: the hotel has enormous character and charm, the staff are wonderful, the room was huge for San Francisco standards as well as exceptionally comfortable, the location is convenient...the water machine in the lobby is a lovely touch (!). Even the complementary coffee in the lobby was good, putting so many other hotels to shame.

My only tiny quibble is that the WiFi in the room was a bit slow, but that's a really minor complaint. Everything else was perfect.

quick checkin... gorgeous hotel a real feeling of culture and history. great room adequate size. unfortunately the hot water went out and I wasn't able to have a shower after arriving so that was a very troubling development and caused me a lack of sleep and some distress management did their best but would not honor for me a free night as I had requested. they did allow me a late checkout though which I really appreciate it. 2:00 p.m. they also said they would give me a free night next time. I guess most people don't really come back on an offer like that but who knows maybe I will :-) I havd o change rooms because of the strike noise and they told me I couldn't do it that day cuz the msidss had left. well the next day it was so incredibly loud I had to get up at 6 in the morning and ask them to change my room and even though no changing service that happened they gave it to me so I don't think there would have been any difference they should have let me change it the night before..that was rather unfortunate carrying all my stuff from floor to floor in the middle of the early morning.. all that being said it's an amazing hotel you should stay there you will not be disappointed. once I was in the new room it was very quiet and everything was perfect. The staff was really great and I had an amazing stay!

Although the hotel was older and the rooms were small, the hotel and very clean and had everything you needed for a short stay. Beds were very comfortable and the linen and bath towels appeared to be new and of good quality. All staff were very friendly and eager to answer questions and assist. Would recommend Kensington Place!!

Only improvement would be with the elevators. During our stay ,only one elevator was working, so you often had to wait a bit for the elevator to reach your floor. On 2 occasions the elevator door would not open on our floor, so we took the stairs up one floor. Another suggestion would be to have a small microwave so you could warm up leftovers for that midnight snack.

The staff is very friendly and helpful. We needed a kettle to cook water and it was delivered to our room very quickly. The staff also helped us with ordering Waymo since we could not install the app on our phones. Also you can refill water (flavoured etc.) or soda in the reception. Coffee / teas is provided in the morning and a glass of sherry in the late afternoon. The location is perfect, maybe 100 meters to reach the cable car station, many restaurants and the China Town nearby. You can reach the pier and Fisherman's Wharf within a 30 minute walk.

The room and entire hotel is a bit older and old fashioned. There is no air-condition and you cannot open the window (more than 10 cm wide due to security reasons) so it can be challenging especially in the summertime.

The location is 10 out of 10! Close to a lot of SF highlights and a lot of bars, restaurants, shops, grocery, you name it in a walking distance. The area felt very safe! Close to public transportation (BART is 10-15 min walk) There was always Sherry to drink in the afternoon/night in the lobby. The double queen was spacious enough for 3 adults. The bed sleeps very well; The room was sometimes warm, but the staff could solve this by a standalone fan if needed. The staff was extremely friendly and service oriented. On our stay on NY/eve we received a bottle of Champane and some treats. It was a warm welcome! Thank you for this! And I would definitely stay here again when visiting SF.

Maybe the coffee could be served till later than 10.30 am (Dutch audience like to drink coffee all day :-)) but then again, a coffee maker in the room is available upon request. Maybe air-condition in the rooms (especially for the summer)?

The location is superb, easily reachable by bus or BART. If you are in town to see a show, you're likely steps away from the venue. Union Square is quite noisy, so bear that in mind if you are a light sleeper; even being on one of the top floors can only do so much, given the way sound travels. The staff were always very friendly and helpful, and the bed is comfy.

This is nothing to do with the hotel itself, but the location can be challenging in that there are sometimes protests in the area (when I was there, hotel unions were protesting, luckily not this hotel, but ones nearby), and they are allowed to protest from 7am until 10pm. Additionally, Union Square has become run down and gritty in recent years, so just be aware.

Excellent location just beside Union Square with loads of places to eat and drink nearby. Lovely hotel with very friendly and helpful staff. Rooms were really comfy and quiet at night. The complimentary takeaway coffee and pastry was just what you needed to set you up for the day. We didn't get to sample the complimentary sherry because we were out and about every day. The reception area's appearance and atmosphere were so lovely that a glass of sherry while sitting there would be such a lovely treat. I would definitely come back to this hotel and will definitely be recommending it to anyone.
