The host at Guesthouse Hakuka made us feel incredibly welcome from the moment we arrived. The guesthouse was charming and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Its location near the Higashi Chaya District was ideal, allowing us to explore the area when it was less crowded, which made the experience much more enjoyable.
One downside of staying at this guesthouse was the lack of an on-site host, which can be a bit tricky if an issue arises or if you're looking for more personal interaction. Additionally, like many Japanese guesthouses, the insulation isn’t great, so the quality of your rest depends on the behaviour of other guests. Luckily, everyone during our stay was quiet and respectful, so it didn't disrupt our experience.

The apartment is conveniently located in Okubo. It is a ten-minute walk to Okubo Station which is one stop from Shinjuku Station on the Chuo Line. There is a supermarket, open until midnight, just a five-minute walk away. The owner kindly met us at Shin Okubo Station and drove us to the apartment where he explained how everything we needed to know. Having previously lived in Tokyo for several years I was prepared for the limited space but it works well for a single person or a couple. Having a washing machine was a bonus during our extended stay.
Japanese television is an acquired taste. We would have appreciated access to movies or documentaries to enjoy late at night, either in English or with English subtitles.

Lovely little guesthouse close to the Kazuemachi Chaya (Geisha) district and river. Also walking distance from the castle and Kenrokuen gardens, which are 100% worth a visit. The host is very lovely and accommodating and helped me forward my luggage on using the post office service (I’ve only used Yamato previously in Japan and it worked just as well). Kitchen is well equipped so gives you the option to cook which is a nice change from hotels.
Walls are thin so you can hear other guests a bit. Whilst there are 3 toilets, there’s only one bathroom with a shower/bath between 4 rooms, which meant having to wait sometimes for a while to be able to use a shower, which was a little inconvenient when in a rush in the morning, so would factor in getting up early to make sure you’re not delayed. Minor in the grand scheme of things.

Location near the Higashi-Chaya district was good, and the guesthouse had everything you need including a kitchen and washing machine. The futon mattress was comfy and I got the best sleep of my entire trip there. The hosts were nice.
The air in the bedroom was a bit stuffy, which I suspect was coming from the tatami mats. The walls are literally paper thin so you can hear the others guests even if they're whispering, though it didn't disturb my sleep. Overall I think it's great value for the cost.

- There was no staff there but instructions to access the place and my room were clear - Very clean and tidy, good amenities - Has a bath and free washing machine - The room has heating and cooling - Located on a quiet road, very close to Higashi Chaya district - Nice assortment of free coffee and tea drinks
- The check-in process was a little more tedious than at other places. I had to go out and get change for the additional tax I was supposed to leave as payment, so that was kinda inconvenient. - I didn't really understand how to use the washer. I asked some other guests who were Japanese, and they seemed confused by the settings too. - I could hear the person in the next room talking all night through the wall.

It was exactly as advertised and enjoyed that it was in a quiet local neighborhood. There was an amazing breakfast place close by with the souffle pancakes, poached eggs and hollandaise sauce served with a side salad only open from 8 -10 and what they made was cooked to perfection. I will dream about that breakfast!
There was not a dryer so I would have done laundry at the place we stayed before or after. Required some additional time management around sightseeing and some clothes blew off the line as there were only a couple of clips available.

Nice location close to Higashi Chaya District with easy access from Kanazawa Station. Everything was very clean and well kept and the host was easy to reach through Booking.com or messaging apps like Whatsapp. Our room was spacious and the neighborhood was very quiet at night. There was a kitchen with a fridge as well as free coffee and tea and utensils to borrow, and a washing machine next to the combined shower/bath.
I liked everything! The room was a little cold in March but there was an air conditioner in our room so that problem was easily solved.

One thing was above all the places that I stayed. It was provided earbuds to sleep with if you needed (although there were no loud sounds, Japan in quiet in general). Razors and shave foam at the bathroom to be used by guest if needed. This was my first to find these in a booked placed. High praise for these. 10/10 And as a bonus I encounter an earthquake and I was checked in if I am ok. Very nice thing to do!
Really I do not have anything to complain about.

The house is located very close to the Higashi Chaya District, in a quiet residental area. It is well equiped with everything in the common areas. Although the rooms are small, the soundproofing seems to be working well. But what made our stay really memorable is the kindness of our host. To anyone who is visiting Kanazawa, and is looking for a cosy traditional accomodation I can strongly recommend this place.
The nearest convenience store is about 5-7 minutes walk, but it is not something that would stop me from choosing this place again.

The House made a nice impression also from the outside. It was perfectly clean and we were welcomed very nicely and friendly by the owner. The small kitchen was well equipped, and the location of guesthouse Hakuka was perfect! We wolle up with morning sun, what was nice!
It can get a bit noisy, if other guests are loud late in the evening or early in the morning (as it was the case while we were there, e.g. Washing machine at 6pm and loud talking in the common area… We had the room on the ground floor so we woke up) but there were even ear plugs in the room, which was great!
