I couldn't recommend this place enough. I booked a few nights here after reading all of the reviews, and I was not disappointed. Bungo and his mother were the kindest, most welcoming hosts. Bungo very diligently went over a map of Kanazawa with me when I first arrived and gave his recommendations for landmarks/sightseeing. He also provided me with QR codes of lists on Google Maps of all of their recommended restaurants, both breakfast and dinner, which I saved and found incredibly helpful as I was exploring the city. The building is clean, well-maintained, and has so much character. It's very obvious how much the family values the property by the amount of care they put into it. I had a single room and was astonished by the amount of space that it had with cabinets, drawers, and an entire 'entryway' to the room where you could take off your slippers. I could very easily have my large suitcase open in that part of the room off of the tatami and out of the way. I slept very comfortably on the futon and had very few issues with noise from other guests during the night. I also loved the bath in the basement--you can leave a sign at the top of the stairs indicating that it's occupied so you can use it in private. The location is right in the middle of Kanazawa and within walking distance of Kenrokuen, the Higashichaya District, Omicho Market, etc. Convenience store is a two-minute walk. You will need to take a taxi from Kanazawa Station if you have a lot of heavy luggage like I did, though fare is only about 1100-1200 JPY. Many, many thanks to Bungo, his mother, and the staff for making my visit to Kanazawa so pleasant. I'll absolutely be returning if I find myself back in the area someday!

None, everything was great. Standard caveats of staying in a ryokan like shared bathrooms, thin walls, etc.

As a family of one adult and two kids, we loved the Ryoken Yamamuro. It was a really special experience for us. The staff were very friendly and very helpful with giving us suggestions on local attractions and necessities. We loved the traditional reindeer, little Japanese garden outside of our room and the Onsen. The shared kitchen with microwave was also a bonus!

We had a downstairs room and it was a bit noisy with people walking above us, but that is the nature of being in this style of accommodation. Likewise, the parking lot next door has a security light that shines in through the shoji-cha, which if you don't like to sleep with light could be a problem unless you take an eye mask. But don't let these things detract from your decision, it's a wonderful place to stay.

The room was very spacious. We had our own toilet and shower, which was great. Staff were lovely and kind, happy to provide help and information on Kanazawa's restaurants and attractions. They have umbrellas you could bowwor in case of rain, which came very handy. Tea and biscuits were provided, as well as coffee, fridge and an eating area in the common space. It's also perfectly located in a quiet street, but very close to restaurants, the market and Kanazawa castle grounds with the famous garden. Overall, we loved the place.

As with most ryokans in old buildings, walls are thin so the experience depends somewhat on the other guests. Our first night was great, but on the second one we did hear our upstairs neighbors talking and moving about quite loudly at night. This is not the fault of this ryokan, mind. The bathroom area could get a tad cold in chilly weather - no issues in the room itself which can be heated.

There is a reason why the ratings are so high! Very clean facilities, cute and comfortable room, perfect location, Bungo and his mom were very sweet and helpful, Bungo gave great local recommendations, the onsen in the basement was amazing for my sore feet and muscles after a lot of sightseeing! Price was really a bargain. Although bathroom and onsen were shared, I never ran into any problems with not being able to use them when I wanted to.

The only thing I can think of is that the walls are a little thin. There is nothing that can be done about this though since it is a historic traditional building.

Virtues abound at this wonderful inn. The central location, the accommodating staff, the many room choices, the very nice onsen bath, the easy and pleasant common room, the perfect pillows and non-down comforters, the very quiet neighborhood. We stayed in the quiet second floor family room (with restrooms also on the second floor.) For what you get, this place is a bargain! Also, the incredible Kanazawa Curry Laboratory restaurant is only a few blocks away. Best three nights sleep we have had in years of visiting Japan!

Nothing, we loved this place and Bungo-San!

The ryokan Yamamuro is a warm place that can be well summarized by the Japanese "omotenashi" (hospitality and mindfulness). The host is very friendly and helpful, creating an atmosphere which almost feels like one stays at a respected good friend's place. The host waited for our late check-in because of a late train and even made storage of our luggage possible after check-out despite scheduled construction works. Recommendations for sightseeing, nearby restaurants etc. are provided by the host (digitally and direct explanation). We got the experience we were looking for: a traditional Japanese ryokan with good service and clean rooms. Sharing bathrooms is part of this but it did not bother us. There are enough shower rooms and the traditional bath can be blocked with an "Occupied" sign. When we first wanted to enter the bath, it was occupied. The host offered to call us when it becomes free again which worked very well. In the end, we regret that our travel plans did not allow for more then one night staying in Kanazawa. We are looking forward to stays in the future.

Overall there was nothing we disliked. However, one should be aware that futons are harder than usual western-style beds (it did not bother us).

Just a short bus ride from the station, a fantastic central location with great accessibility to many of Kanazawa's famous spots within walking distance! The space itself felt cosy, clean and well-maintained, no issues with the room. The staff were very kind and were very thorough in their explanations for recommending surrounding locations, including where to visit at what time. They also kindly allowed me to use their phone to make a booking for a nearby attraction :) rooms are on the second floor and Bungo-san helped to bring my luggage up the stairs.

Nothing really! Echoing another review on that it's a simple ryokan and not particularly fancy or luxurious, but I found it welcoming and homey.

Generally I don't take a "shared bathroom" option but I decided to give it a try in Japan! I was right: probably Japan is the only place where it makes sense to consider sharing bathroom rooms! This the bathroom were super clean, the products given were top (they had Shiseido for hair and body). You get your own Kimono for moving around too! Super nice experience They also change towel and Kimono each day. Super clean and super characteristic! love it. Staff speak a very good English and they are super nice and ready to help you. Bed were super comfy and we did not have any backpain the day after (we like hard mattress though). Location is perfect: nearby the Fish market and some very good restaurants! In less than 20 minutes you are walking in the park. They also have the luggage shipping service (which is super easy and comfortable to use)

I liked everything, the only note would be that the Ryokan was a little cold and humid in the common areas as the heating system (I think - not sure) it is run only in the main rooms and not in the bathroom (I find it quite normal in Japan though, so it is not the Ryokan but it seems like this for everyone).

It is a family run place - you can feel that their soul and heart in this place. They were always around and were there before you could even start to need something or have a question. At the same time you never had the feeling of being watched.

It is nothing that I didn’t like about the property but more what I feel is in the nature of a ryokan. As it was freezing cold outside and the building is old it was pretty cold inside. They provide heating which works perfectly fine but still the floors are cold and I had a constant chilly feeling. My husband also had problems with the mattress due to his weight it was pretty hard. As I said it is more about a ryokan itself than about this property. I guess it will be stunning in spring 😊

Ryokan Yamamuro is a traditional Japanese inn run by a mother and her son Bungo. The place is incredible; the rooms are clean and beautiful, it’s perfectly situated, and the hosts are kind beyond belief. Bungo took his time explain Kanazawa, and recommend activities based on what I liked. For the facilities, the onsen of the Ryokan is also wonderful, and the futon bed is comfortable. I cannot recommend this place enough for travelers, it’s definitely a must if you plan on exploring Kanazawa.
