Loved this place. Location was great. Within 5-15 min walk from tonnes of stuff - restaurants, temples, hikes, museums. Right next to one subway station and a 5-10 minutes walk from 2 other stops, so you can get anywhere really. We also caught the bus a few times and there are useful routes that pass close by. Plenty of convenience stores very close by, and a couple small grocery stores too. I really liked the layout of our room as the bathroom, bedroom, and kitchen areas were all separated which made it a bit easier to get some privacy when needed. The windows can open which was so nice as we could get fresh air all the time. Our room was near a fairly busy street so there was some traffic noise but nothing too crazy (except a loud motorbike here or there. It wasn't enough to wake us up or anything)! The hotel receptionists were always super nice and helpful. They really went above and beyond to help me when I needed to make a long call as well. I saw people say the dryer washer/dryer didn't dry their clothes, but we did 2 full loads of clothes and they were bone dry by the end each time. We just left our stuff in the machine for longer than the timer said and it worked great. Beds were hard but comfy! We both slept really well every night, and I'm usually a rough sleeper so that was nice. We also got to use Netflix on the tv, and the fridge and microwave were useful too. Seriously everything was great.

If you're really sensitive to noise I'd ask for a room not facing the road, although we didn't find it too bad at all and slept fine.

Booked both rooms on the ground floor for 6 pax with the tatami areas for 4 nights. Compact rooms, but they were beautiful (modern Japanese concept), comfortable and equipped. Brought young kids who transformed the tatami area into their play area. Found the bathroom with drying function extremely helpful for laundry. Location was perfect to walk to the new town or to Gion, and about 3-5 mins walk to the Keihan Sanjo train station with elevator access (and can also connect you to Sanjo station). My family and I can be fairly superstitious, but despite a private Buddhist graveyard just right beside our rooms, there was nothing creepy about the hotel and rooms! Couldn’t even see the graveyard and didn’t have any weird encounters/feelings - felt peaceful instead. Hands down one of the best boutique hotels we’ve stayed in before and we hope to be back when we’re in Kyoto!

Spacious considering other places we’ve stayed in Japan. We were able to make hot breakfasts very comfortably and if we’d been able to find a grocery store may have had some dinners in too. Very convenient location to both a JR station for day trips, subway, Gion and the vibrant hustle and bustle across the River. We’d recommend. Don’t be fooled though - you’ll still do a lot of walking so bring comfortable shoes. Taxis very easy to get in this area as an alternative. If you’re in town for the annual Jidai Matsuri parade in October, it’s a stone’s throw away from the front door.

Some of the pots and dishes needed to be rewashed prior to using - we do that anyway, so a small price to pay for all the pluses.

So many excellent reasons to stay here. The location alone could be a good reason but the room was spacious, clean, and well stocked with linens, TP, tissues, and kitchen items - enough to make home meals (great induction stovetop)! More than enough electrical plugs. Great washing machine and drying rack for drying clothes in shower room with powerful room dryer (even Levi's dried fast).

Beds were too hard. Pillows were uncomfortable BUT we later inquired and were provided ones to our liking. Lastly, adding a firestick option for TV would be a plus.

Gion Hanna Stay turned out to be the perfect hotel for our stay in Kyoto. We were able to walk to so many of the areas we wanted to visit. Yet, the location was relatively quiet. The room was spacious, the washer/dryer unit was helpful. The kitchen was a nice asset. I chose the hotel without much research but am so glad I did!

As many ryokan in Japan do, Gion Hanna Stay requests that you remove your shoes upon entering your room. It would be nice to have a small stool or bench to sit on while putting one's shoes back on. Also, other properties we stayed in other Japanese cities had slippers in the rooms. That would have been a nice addition.

We very much enjoyed our time at Gion HANNA Stay, and we couldn't be happier with our experience. We booked the Superior Double Room on the 5th floor, and it was well worth it. Our room was spotlessly clean, had a good supply of kitchen utensils (you can ask for knives at the front desk), the air conditioner worked well, and the washing machine + dryer combo was convenient. The size of the room was perfectly suited for two people (it/d be a tight fit for more than two people) and the high ceiling made it feel more spacious. The layout of the bedroom provided optimal floor space with the bed against the wall and the bathroom is also spacious. One of the standout features was the fancy, high-tech toilet in the room that included a button to raise and lower the seat, and multiple bidet options. One of the best toilets we saw during our time in Japan. An additional bit of added value is that since we stayed 10 days, we received 3 cleaning vouchers that we could have used to request housekeeping. We didn't end up using them, as we took care of everything ourselves, but they might come in handy for other guests. Also, we found the wifi speeds to be good (my husband was able to play his video games over wifi just fine). From the moment we arrived, the front desk staff was friendly, and attentive. They made check-in a breeze and were always available to answer any questions we had throughout our stay. There are multiple convenience stores within a 5 minute walk, and a larger grocery store about a 15 minute walk away. The neighborhood itself is pretty quiet, but just across the bridge (10 minute walk), you'll find the bustling tourist area with tons of shops and restaurants. We liked being in a quiet area with action nearby. Overall, I can highly recommend this place if you're coming to Kyoto.

Excellent location. Very near the convenience stores, train stations and a lot of restaurants nearby. The location is in the quiet and nice part of Kyoto as well. The room is beautiful and well laid out and I love the laundry facilities, especially the drying function in the bathroom. I was able to do a large batch of laundry in one night. They also provided little things such as laundry baskets which are awesome. The staff speaks english as well and very helpful. I highly recommend this place for a stay in Kyoto!

They don't provide luggage delivery service yet but they can receive your luggage. If you need to send luggage to your next hotel you can do that from the convenience store right across the street. Very easy!

Great apartment. Very well set up. Staff were very helpful. Two great options for washing and drying, one by machine, one by drying room, which was the bathroom! The bathroom was interesting, with Japanese style shower using the bathroom floor and a stool and wash basin, along with bath with removable shower attachment. Quite efficient. Was surprised to find a graveyard behind our 'garden area'. Not visible or a problem just surprising! Walking distance to Nishi Market. Fantastic fun experience. Restaurants everywhere, especially in the market area. Massive market! All in all, a good stay.

Japanese pillows are extra firm but you can ask for Western style pillows. The bed was way too hard and inflexible for my back. We had twin beds. Was provided with, I think, a floor mattress (futon?) to go on top of mine. Was an improvement but still relatively firm. Our room did not contain a coffee machine as indicated. They were able to provide one on request but no capsules were available.

Location is very convenient to Keihan sanjo station. There are a couple of Fresco markets about 2-3 blocks away in either direction. Walking distance to many temples and shrines. Restaurants on both side of Kamo river are a quick walk away. In room washer/dryer and kitchen were really appreciated

Front desk has limited hours but staff spoke English
