very well situated in magome to begin a not difficult & very worthwhile/scenic trek on the 8km portion of the nakasendō trail that ends in tsumago. room was quite spacious & food was carefully prepared, generously served & tasty. they also have a quite large private parking lot on a small/narrow/twisting/potholed tiny roadway that snakes its way parallel to & behind the "main strip" & isn't easy to locate ... so probably best to ask at the ryokan & have someone (try to) direct u -- in what's apt to be japanese only
many have rightfully "complained" abt the non-private/communal bathrooms being a floor down from where they slept. this less bothered me in terms of showering, but would've been a drag in the middle of the night when using the men's toilets on that rather tight & steeply-stepped lower floor ... had i not noticed that there were individual little toilet rooms/stalls designated for women on the floor where we slept, which were private -- ie, 1 person at a time -- & totally empty in those wee hours. [...just sayin']

Lovely place, with friendly family who look after you very well. You book your bath slot on arrival and have a half hour to enjoy your (very) hot bath/Onsen in their wooden bathtub. Dinner and breakfast are provided and were excellent. We don’t eat meat and they catered for that. A perfect place if you’re planning to walk to Magome on the Nakesendo Way.
The walk up from the bus is steep and with luggage can be hard. You share the bathroom, but we knew and expected that and it wasn’t a problem. The gents are two floors below where your room is so be prepared and with a low doorframe very easy to hit your head.

I liked everything! The room was spacious and the mattresses were very comfortable. There was tea and biscuits left in our room on arrival and the next day also which we thought was a lovely touch. We stayed 2 nights. The food was excellent, it was prepared and waiting for us at breakfast and dinner. We asked for the vegetarian option when we booked and it was delicious. Fabulous location and the staff were really welcoming and helpful. We really enjoyed our stay here.
The only thing was having to go down the small stairway to use the bathroom as we didn't have one with our room but we quickly got used to that

The price includes two Japanese-style rooms (ryokan), a sitting room and a bedroom. In the sitting room a Japanese tea set with good sencha tea (teapot and bowls) is waiting. The available natural hot springs are a great place to relax and unwind. Meals in an atmospheric atmosphere in yakutas. Dinner was really delicious, quite decent fine dining. Breakfast was equally good. We arrived in the rain after dusk, the housewife greeted us at the entrance with towels in hands. Service was absolutely exemplary. Great price / quality ratio.
I don't recall any inconveniences.

We stayed at this beautiful traditional Japanese inn at the start of our journey along the Nakasendo Way. The staff spoke enough English to answer our questions which we really appreciated. We let the hotel know in advance that we needed a gluten free dinner and breakfast and they went to an amazing effort to accommodate this request. The meals were utterly delicious. We booked a small twin futon room and it was small as expected but perfectly comfortable and with amazing views. The shared bathrooms were easy to book at check-in and very clean. A lovely hotel with friendly and helpful staff in a gorgeous mountain town, thoroughly recommend this property.

Very convenient location at the center of the village. The ryokan is spacious, bedroom was wide enough, and there is a traditionnal bath. The dinner and breakfast are amazing. Everything is clean and beautifully decorated.
The bath is very small and you get only 30min to enjoy it, since it's shared. They say breakfast *starts* at 7:30 AM, but they lay it on the table and let it wait for you. Since we didn't know that, we arrived at 8:30 and found it got cold. Luckily most of it are cold dishes but it meant it was out on the table laying for an hour.

Accomodated to my vegan diet, the owner of the ryokan even gave me a ride in his own car to the train station in the next town as I had a very heavy suitcase. His family has been running the business for many years and he is so full of knowledge!
There is only one bath/shower each (one per women and men) that all the female or male guests share in the evening, you need to book a time for it when you check in. Shared toilet and washbasins as well

Set in the beautiful Magome Juku postal town, this was the perfect end to our Nakasendo Trail walk. It was authentic, clean and beautifully renovated. The authentic dinner and breakfast rounded it off really well.
I loved everything including the traditional hot tub bath. After a long, sweaty day’s walk, the only downside was that our time slot to shower and bath was 3,5 hours later. But good things are worth the wait! 😊

Breakfast and dinner were kaiseki meals, very good and comprehensive. A very authentic experience, great location on the Nakasendo Trail. We were able to drop off our luggage at the ryokan and hike from Magome to Tsumago, about 6 miles. Then we took the bus back. Such a delightful place, was not Disney-fied. It was very quiet and peaceful at night, we walked outside after day trippers had left.
Taking showers at night was at destinated time slots, a needed process to accommodate all the guests. This isn’t a dislike, just informational.

We adored our stay in Magome. This is a traditional inn which made this not just an accommodation but an experience. From the slippers to the futons, everything felt extremely authentic. And then there’s the food - our kaiseki dinner and breakfast were some of the best food we ate in Japan.
It is a traditional inn, so it is possible to hear noise - but this is limited and quiet hours are respected. Also, if you’re tall, watch your head!
