The hotel is charming. It may be showing its age a bit, but that only adds to its charm. Our room, the yellow parlor, was enormous with a comfortable seating area. The bed was very comfortable. There was good water pressure in the shower. The grounds are besutiful. It is late September so the gardens are finished. It is not clear how well maintained they are in summer, but the original layouts are clear and lovely. Breakfast was elegant and delicious. We ate both nights in The Bistro. The food was very good.

There were two steps down in our bathroom that were a bit unnerving at night.

The room was spacious and comfortable, with an equally roomy bathroom with bath and separate shower, very nicely renovated with an interesting ceiling! Staff were so attentive and friendly. We went in December so could enjoy the lovely decorations in the fantastically interesting library and sitting room, All in all an unexpectedly special feel to the whole place that really made our anniversary stay unique. Thank you to all concerned!

It would be nice to be able open even a tiny section of the windows in the bedroom.

We had a lovely relaxing stay at Roman Camp Country House Hotel. The staff were really accommodating .. the chef was on holiday and the Potting Shed restaurant fully booked, but they served us afternoon tea and dinner in the Library, which made our stay even more special. Beautiful gardens, delicious food, and dog friendly. We’d love to come back!

There’s nothing I didn’t like! Yes, the decor is a wee bit tired, but it was like being a guest in a country house and somehow, it all added to the relaxing atmosphere of the place.

The style is 'shabby chique' and the public rooms are comfortable as was our, spacious, room. We had dinner in the bistro in the hotel grounds. The food and service were good. Breakfast was enjoyable with a wide range of dishes available and again the food was of a decent standard.

It was all pretty good really, which you would expect from a hotel of The Roman Camp's standing. The pre-dinner gin and tonics were pricey as was breakfast. The breakfast coffee was tbh execrable.

The whole place is absolutely stunning and set in such a beautiful area, surprisingly close to the river too! We had both dinner and breakfast there and it was a real proper dining experience. The dinner wasn't cheap but the quality was up there with michelin star. I think it was supposed to be a 4 course meal but they gave us 2 surprise courses in the middle. Absolutely top class! Our breakfast was run by a wonderful lady from South Africa who was very attentive and lovely to chat to. An excellent representative of the quality staff at this establishment. The lounge areas were exactly what we were hoping for. Similar to the National Trust estates that we often visit. They had the fires going and we relaxed in the drawing rooms while having a few drinks. This is essentially what we came here for and it was an unforgettable experience. All the furniture has an authentic old feeling too. Exactly what we wanted. Thanks!

Nothing!

A very special hotel which is quite iconic. We loved it. Several absolutely lovely lounges with very comfortable sofas and armchairs, fires always lit, soft lighting, in the style of a country house. The charm of the place is that it is like staying as a guest in a lovely old country house, very comfortable and relaxed, very cosy and welcoming. I was imagining the pleasure of having a winter or even Christmas party for friends there. We stayed in a suite which was very spacious and clean. The bed was huge and very comfortable. It was October, and raining, but the room and the hotel, were lovely and warm. There was a separate sitting room with tv and spacious bathroom with bath and separate shower. The main restaurant was not open while we were there, but we dined in a lovely little bistro in the grounds, and had really excellent food, especially the lamb. The staff were super, friendly and efficient. Also our suite was dog friendly. We will return.

I stupidly did not book dinner before travelling, and was sorry that the main dining room was not open for our two day stay, though there were few people in residence, during the rainy stormy spell in late October, which may explain it. The alternative dining in the Potting Shed Bistro was really very good, and reasonably priced.

A hidden historical gem. Roman Camp sits just off the high street. Sitting in a quiet setting in lovely garden grounds by the river. We stayed one night on our way home from a road trip around Scotland and was the perfect end to our break. The lounge areas were comfortable and cosy. After a superb meal in the potting shed which is a separate annexe restaurant we relocated to one of the main lounges by the log fire. Loved the quaintness and history of the place. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was excellent with good varied choice. This was in the main building in a lovely dining room. It has all the usual amenities you’d expect TV WiFi etc. if you’re looking for super modern contemporary this is not for you but if you’re looking for traditional country manor with history panelled walls, open fires, good food and wine.walks in the gardens there’s not much better. The bedroom was a little small but very comfortable and clean. The location is superb with a short walk back onto Callander high street.

Our room was a little on the small side and quite dark. Considering the age of the place I suppose it was not surprising and did not affect our stay.

Lovely grounds, right on the banks of the river Teith. The potting shed bistro, will be lovely in summer, it was pouring! Property was a Roman camp (under the river) & a 16th century shooting lodge, it’s styled as such. Dinner & breakfast we’re very good. Carpets & some furniture were a bit tired, but the upkeep of such an ancient hotel & vast grounds/gardens must be huge.

I like to browse drinks lists & cocktail menus, when I’m away, maybe try something different or treat myself to a fancy cocktail, but hotel only has a wine list. I asked for a drinks list then, in the evening a cocktail list and was told, no, we only have a wine list - maybe fed up with people asking! We didn’t even know how much our drinks cost, until we checked out, as there are no prices displayed, either. I presumed the drink we had with our canapés was included, but they were on our bill! I thought bars/hotels had to display drinks prices, by law. There are also no wine or drinks menus online - I wanted to gauge prices & see if they offered cocktails - prices are obviously a closely, guarded, secret!

What a lovely location. An historic former hunting lodge built in 1625 (!!), with lovely amenities and outstanding rooms that make you feel like a guest at an elegant country estate, even if the owner wasn't actually there. We happened upon the place on a day where there were few guests, and it engendered a feeling that it was all there just for us. Staff was solicitous, courteous, friendly and efficient. This location is used as a wedding venue (a beautiful room set aside for a wedding party), and it's elegant, not gaudy. Very nice. Room was excellent and upscale, and a very good value for the price. There were few people there on the single night we were able to spend there. I wish it had been possible to stay longer. Restaurants were both excellent for dinner and breakfast. Walking the grounds is a great pleasure, with large gardens that might look a bit overgrown inj some areas at first sight, but which in fact are well tended and have a remarkable variety of plantings both decorative and herbal. Clearly much of the herbal planting supplies some of the fresh seasonings the restaurants use in the food offerings. There are some extraordinary plant features including the biggest group of ancient and spectacularly huge rhododendrons one is likely to encounter anywhere, and ancient Sweet Chestnut trees - likely planted a few hundred years ago - that loom over the property. A swift-running and wide stream (we were these during a very wet stretch of weather activity) runs by the property.

I can't think of anything negative to say about the place, particularly if you a fan of historic country homes. This property comes much more authentic visiting experience than you will find in country homes that have undergone modernization at the expense of the loss of some of the original fabric of the building. This location preserves most of the beautiful old stuff that gives one of these homes personality and character while it updates those things that need to be done to make it hospitable and welcoming to modern travelers. To me this is an ideal approach to hospitality, and so I can't fault the owner's decision to offer a very good experience that combines lovely historical touches and modern amenities.

The room was very comfortable, clean and quiet. The garden with walks by the river was beautiful. The library had a roaring fire and comfortable chairs for reading. The food was delicious - including, at breakfast, the best creamy porridge I've had for a long time! We enjoyed eating in The bistro in the evening.

The bedroom lighting was definitely very low lighting! We would have liked a bedside light each for reading!
