Birthday Break- Fabulous Time. I love this Hotel and it's beautiful decor, the lounge and dining area is perfect to relax in with coffee or a wine. I requested a quiet room if possible and I was given my request, baring in mind this is a city centre hotel and right by the train station so expect some noise, you ain't in the countryside! I still managed to sleep well. I love the charm of this Hotel and it's original features, I booked a last minute two night break for my birthday and I had the best time. I made use of the Spa facilities, jacuzzi, pool, sauna, steam room and plunge pool. Great after a days shopping to chill. I also enjoyed my food in the restaurant each evening. The Hotel is central to EVERYTHING. So the location is perfect. I felt totally at ease as a solo traveller and met lots of lovely people within the Hotel. I arrived on my Birthday and I want to give a very special mention to Keira who works in the restaurant, she is a lovely girl who looked after me so well, kind, caring and friendly, she went above and beyond for me, she's a real asset to the hotel. Thanks for making my birthday so special and the lovely surprise on my dessert! Michael made my lattes each morning and brought them to my table, many thanks Michael! Not forgetting Christine who was fantastic with me, helping carry my bags out of the door for my train. I will certainly be back soon and I hope to see the lovely staff again. It'll be my place of choice even for coffee or a wine if I'm passing by. Also absolutely stunning Christmas Decorations, visiting this time of year is a must! Thank you All!
Room was very hot at times

The decor and layout of the reception & corridors were lovely. The staff were pleasant and friendly. The room was cosy, shower was powerful and hot. The restaurant was wonderful, the waiter who served us was very apologetic when our food was slightly delayed. The food was delicious. Would stay again in the future.
The pillows were too hard, felt like you were sleeping sat up in the night. The duvet was too thin and we found it hard to get it out from under the mattress. The bedside lamp was broken. Some of the TV channels didn’t work or lost connection, possibly due to the snow.

I've stayed here several times previously, so know what to expect from this popular City Centre hotel. Staff are excellent and, apart from the staff member who overcharged me at Reception, are well informed and helpful. Dining Room and Housekeping staff deserve a mention as well as they are all approachable and friendly.
I didn't appreciate being overcharged at Reception, but, when pointed out, this was quickly rectified by other more experienced staff. Room was like an oven when I went in, so the window had to stay open all night which, in turn, meant that there was a fair amount of noise coming from the streets below.

I loved this hotel. It has some beautiful original features, and it is giving you a sense of grandeur from the past. The room we got was admittedly smaller than expected but still nice and super clean. I loved the choice of pillows (because some hotels have huge uncomfortable pillows) and I loved that you could choose a smaller one if you wanted. The bathroom was sparkling clean and modern. There was a mini fridge in the room, which was very convenient. The hand and body wash smelled fantastic and was of good quality. The breakfast was as good as expected (as I had read from other reviews) and was indeed one of the best English breakfasts I had in hotels. The bacon was perfectly cooked and there was even black pudding. The staff was all very polite and helpful. The location was excellent - one minute walk from the train station.
The carpet inside the rooms could do with an update but understandably this is a very big hotel and it is only so often that you can do an update.

The location from the train station couldn't have been more convenient, literally a 2 minute walk. We loved the decor and welcoming atmosphere and friendliness from all staff throughout our stay. We had a bar meal and drinks after checking in so we could soak up the surroundings before heading out for the evening and also had a nightcap before bed. The breakfast was great, lots of choice and great value. The hotel staff offer a service where you can leave your suitcases after checking out and this is a very welcome addition to our stay so we could explore Newcastle before our lunchtime departure. We would recommend staying here again, no doubt about it.
There was a club nearby who played music - loudly - until 1am which, on a Sunday night was surprising. Ear plugs are thoughtfully provided by the hotel but didn't really drown out the sound. Should we stay again - and we would love to - we plan to bring our own.

Bed was very comfy. The staff were so helpful and polite.... food was nice.. really relaxing bar area ... the feeling kept us there to eat on our first eve..
The room felt a little run down. Marks on ceiling due to im asuming a leak!!! .no plug on side for the kettle so had to use it from the floor.. heating radiator in bathroom not working.. parking not great..but lucky for us the railway parking situated at the back of the hotel ended up free due to it being broken....bonus :) maybe useful for visitors to know the cost of parking short/longstay... so to budget it into hotel cost.... be prepared as you may hear some weekend music... they love to party in geordie land :) x

The staff were all so lovely and cheerful. We had booked in for the festive afternoon tea and when asked if there was any non alcoholic choices I was told only soft drinks available at the bar. In this day in age, it was abit disappointing that there wasn't a selection of non alcoholic drinks available
In a room for 4, only 2 chairs/mugs were available. There was no heating working in the rooms and no heating at all in the bathroom, no towel heater or a radiator. It Was so cold that I'm glad it was only a 1 night stay as I couldn't bare the thought of being so cold after a shower, so didn't have 1

Location . Traditional hotel with history sadly getting fewer and fewer of them around .
I don’t like the extortionate rates that are becoming commonplace . Parking should be included /or at least subsidised . And more check in staff at 3pm wouldnt go amiss . And at these rates would expect a cooked to order breakfast available . However Newcastle a great city and has great traditional cafes if 👀around I had to be there for an event and the hotel industry takes advantage of that . Not a good policy for the bigger picture and excluding a lot of people before they start .

We'd booked the smaller room, which was very small however the bed was big enough for two and as the window could open, it was very airy too. A very nice touch was the ear plugs in the bedside table due to the fact that the hotel is located next to the train station in the city centre and the management clearly gave consideration to this for their guests. The room was nice and clean and very good value for money. Furthermore the breakfast was exceptionally good.
If on a budget, the smaller rooms are very good value for money however, I would maybe consider booking a larger room next time if I was staying longer than 2 nights.

loved the old worldly feeling of the building and history of it , 175 years is a huge achievement, the staff were excellent room size was good and big bathroom with bath and separate shower were fantastic, loads of hot water and the shower was the best I have ever had in a hotel,
the room was a great size but extreamly noisy, overlooking the front of the hotel and being a weekend nigh you had the drunken revellers ect then bin men emptying the glass bottle bins really early then Road and pavement sweepers the beds and pillows need replacing, very hard , squeaky and uncomfortable breakfast was the usual buffet type which is OK if everything is fresh and hot unfortunately everything was warm not hot and fresh bacon and blackpudding extreamly tough fried eggs/ mushrooms were cold and rubbery we ever had time to try out the leisure facilities but definitely will next time staying here
