The room and facilities were very clean. The bath was very nice, there was also option to rent a private bath. Hot pot dinner was good.

The rooms have no private bathrooms. There was only 30 minutes time to eat the breakfast, 8:00 - 8:30. Check-out time was also very early, at 10:00. Not suitable for people who like to sleep longer. The location is a bit far from the center of Kyoto.

The room is big enough for all 5 of us. Love the Hot Spring! The toilet is shared, but we dealt with it. A really comfortable and serene rest for everyone. Dinner is mainly sukiyaki style. First night, we had Chicken Miso Nabe, the next night we had beef sukiyaki (this is extremely yummy). They serve a traditional breakfast made up of fried fish, simple egg dish and other small dishes. A word of caution > take the BROWN bus no 17 from Kyoto Main Station! not the green one. We almost got lost mid-way in the bus ride, but thankfully, we managed to find the next bus-stop for the BROWN bus no 17 around Takashimaya area. Phew! Another word of caution > if you have big luggage, please call for the ryokan to send over their van to pick you all up from the bus-stop (depot). We attempted to roll our way (4 big luggage), not wise, it was an uphill task, and the terrain can be rough. I think we need to change the wheels of all our rimowas (it'll cost a bomb!). Stay at Ohara and move around the place there. Don't attempt to move back to Kyoto city area, way too far and a waste of time travelling. Check out the beautiful moss garden of the Sanzenin Temple. Lovely lovely lovely! Love the countryside. Truly away from the madding crowds. Busk at the mountains of Mt Hiei.

This was our first onsen experience, and given how much we enjoyed it, it will be the first of many. The baths were phenomenal, and cannot be compared to what we usually call "baths" - it is like melting away, like floating. We wish we could bring them home! Food was also fantastic; dinner was a rich and plentiful hot spring hotpot, which we loved, while breakfast was traditionally Japanese, with a dizzying variety of small, tasty dishes combined into one hearty meal. Don't go expecting bread and ham, but be open - it'll be worth it! (And try raw egg on rice, if you have the stomach for it!) Be clear that the rooms are as minimal as you can expect from an onsen - tatami mats, a small table, a small TV and futons to lay out yourself, on the floor. This may be a bit of a culture shock, but once you get used to it, it is actually immensely cosy. Finally, the surroundings are beautiful. There is not much around there (though you may be able to, and should, buy some local pickled vegetables!), but the scenery and clean air is the perfect refresher between hot spring baths. Getting there is a fairly straightforward hour-long bus drive directly from central Kyoto, which is easy and inexpensive (but try to avoid bringing large luggage, e.g. using a luggage forwarding service to your next hotel!).

We should have stayed longer!

I really love the location of the place, Ohara was a perfect little country side get a way from the busy city life espeically if you want to just to relax during a Vacation. In addition, the breakfast and dinner provided by the Ryokan was absolutely delicious and plentiful. Not once did I feel hungry for more. The onsen itself was very relaxing and thanks to the rotating style, you get to experience both a modern and more rustic onsen.

If there was one improvement I would make it would probably be the drink selection at the Ryokan, I had to travel to the family mart to pick up some milk during my stay.

A much nicer place than I expected from the pictures. Clean and up to date. Dinner and breakfast were both wonderful and the service was top-notch. I had a number of abnormal requests, but the staff got me squared away with a smile. The onsen were great. The location is a bit far from the city and not the most comfortable ride on a city bus for 1.25 hrs, but it is also beautiful and the Ohara valley was beautiful in the evening and morning light. Great spot!

The only complaint was from my traveling companions who hadn't slept on a futon on a tatami floor before. So, just know what you're getting into there.

Unforgettable experience from start to finish. From the moment I arrived, the warmth and attentiveness of the staff made me feel instantly at home. Every detail, from the welcoming tea to the careful layout of the room, reflected the ryokan’s dedication to creating a truly serene and authentic experience. Moxie was helpful and explained everything to us. The room was a perfect blend of traditional charm with tatami mats, beautiful shoji screens, and a view that looked straight out of a postcard. The onsen was simply incredible. The hot spring waters left me feeling refreshed and relaxed, and the surrounding views added an extra layer of tranquility. I especially enjoyed the outdoor bath. Meals were another highlight. Each dish was meticulously prepared, using seasonal ingredients that showcased the best of Japanese cuisine. It was a culinary journey with every bite—delicate, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The staff explained each course, sharing the origins and significance of the dishes, which made the experience even more special. Yusuke was very helpful. It is a hidden gem and an ideal place to unwind, recharge, and experience the best of Japanese hospitality. I can’t recommend it highly enough to anyone looking for an authentic and luxurious stay. Thank you for an amazing time—I’ll be back!

It was perfect

I enjoyed my time here from the food they served to the relaxing Onsen and overall atmosphere of the place. For dinner we had a type of hot pot dish with plenty of vegetables, chicken, and other side dishes that tasted delicious. As for breakfast it was an even better dish to eat first in the morning, it was a light breakfast of seasoned soft tofu and a side of fish and and egg. Both meals were plenty enough to feed a party of 4 and even more since I saw other groups that had more people. The Onsen itself was relaxing, clean, and well kept. My group planned this Onsen in the middle of our trip and it felt like a refresh of ourselves, the Onsen was kept hot and our rooms were how we expected it to be. In the lobby there's a vending machine for additional drinks if you plan on it. Overall a nice place to stay in for a night and the travel to ti was convenient. They provide a shuttle service from the bus stop to their front entrance.

I did expect the Onsen to be more spacious but it could've been bad research on my part, I did appreciate that there was an inside and outside portion of the Onsen for both the male and female side.

Absolutely adored Yumoto and the surrounding town of Ohara. A must-visit for anyone coming to Kyoto. Be sure to stay at least two nights and have dinner and breakfast there. Visit the shrines. Enjoy being away from the busy city. Be aware that futons and tatami floors are an adjustment for those used to western style beds. We had already spent a week sleeping that way so we were perfectly comfortable there. Staff are so delightful and kind.

The location was gorgeous. The Ryoukan provided good breakfast and dinner. Staff was super helpful and some of the staff was able to speak Spanish as well. There is a shuttle service that you can call to pick you up at night. Overall, atmosphere is peaceful and quiet, would highly recommend for the experience!

Keep in mind you cannot use the public shower and onsen if you have tattoos. However, there is a private onsen you can book for an hour at a little over 2000 JPY. Make sure to reserve ahead of time

I like the place as it is really tranquil. The onsen is nice with outdoor onsen and I can feel my skin smoother after soaking in the onsen. The staff is accommodating, we booked for 2 rooms and they helped to arrange such that it become 1 big rooms for 8 of us. They also provided yukata. And our meal is served in private room, which is great. All in all, great place to stay for a night.

There are some steps to climb in order to get into the public onsen. Luckily, they have private onsen, so my mom can still enjoy the onsen. The futon is not as comfortable as I expected it to be.
